Notes

Hypothesis of Alexander McCants by Theron B. McCants .
"Some references may be to Georgetown Co. and some to Williamsburg Co. during this time period because in 1785 when the state was divided into counties and circuit court districts, Williamsburg county was formed from Georgetown Dist. but did not function as such until 1804. Georgetown Co. began as the circuit court district in 1769. The records of this county were burned in 1864.

All these families lived in the Muddy Creek and Black Mingo Creek areas of Williamsburg County near Indiantown and most appear to have been Presbyterian."

"1790 Census lists Alexander as the only male in his household with two females. In 1811 Taxes were paid on his estate. Ref: Boddie's, "History of Williamsburg"."

The Federal Census of 1790 list an Alexander McCants living in Georgetown District, Prince Fredericks parish having one male over 16 years of age including the head of the household; no males under 16; two females including the head of the family and one slave. I believe the male to be Alexander, the two females to be Margery, his wife, and their oldest daughter, Agnes.

The Federal Census of 1800 list an Alexander McCants living in Williamsburg county having one male twenty-six to forty-five years of age including the head of the family, two males under ten years of age, two females less than ten years of age, one female twenty-six to forty -five and six slaves. This appears to be Alexander and Margery, sons James and Alexander and daughters Agnes and Sarah.

Margery is listed as head of the household in the 1810 Census. One Male twenty-six to forty-five; two males ten to sixteen; two males less than ten years; two females between ten and sixteen; and eight slaves.
This appears to be Alexander and Margory, sons James and Alexander being between ten and sixteen; Thomas and Samuel under ten; Agnes and Sarah between ten and sixteen; (altho Agnes would have been over twenty by this time).

Nov 23, 1817, Court of Common Pleas gives information concerning the death of Alexander and names of wife and children.

William Thompson and Sarah, his wife verses the Administrators of Agnes Thompson, the Administrators of Alexander McCants, Thomas McCants, Alexander McCants, James McCants and Samuel McCants. Writ of Partition. Whereas Alexander died possessed at the time of his death of certain negroes and other property, the administration has been granted to William Thompson and James McCants, one of the children of the intestate. Alexander McCants left a widow Margery and sundry children (besides the said James) to wit, Agnes, Alexander, Thomas and Samuel. William Thompson intermarried with Agnes who since the death of Alexander died on whose estate William Thompson has also administered. William Thompson has since intermarried with Sarah, sister of his late wife Agnes. Margery McCants has also been granted to William Thompson and James McCants.

Nothing more is known of Alexander and Margery McCants or of their daughter Agnes who apparently died before 1817 and was married to William Thompson. Neither Alexander or Margery appear in the Census of 1820, therefore, both must have died prior to this time.

The 1820 Census does include a James McCants, head of the household, being between sixteen and twenty-six years with a son under ten year and one female between sixteen and twenty-six years. Children of James McCants are mentioned in the Will of James Daniel.

The Indiantown presbyterian Church was founded about 1757; the records of fellowship list among the baptised members in 1819 James A. McCants, Alexander James McCants, Agnes Daniel, Martha Daniel, Esther E. Daniel (D), John Gotea (D), William Gotea (D), Sarah Gotea, John J. Gotea (D) Elizabeth M. Gotea, Samuel Singletary (D), and James D. Singletary.

Baptised members listed in 1821 included James Alexander McCants, Martha McCants, John Thomas McCants, James D. Daniel and Martha M. McCants in 1824.

Members in Full Communion in 1821 included James McCants, Elizabeth McCants (D), Jannet Daniel (D), Alexander McCants, Martha McCants, James Daniel (D), Martha Daniel (D), Jannet Daniel (D), Jane Daniel (D), John Barr (D), Jannet Barr (D), and in 1829 Agnes Daniel, Martha Daniel, and Elvira Daniel.

Boddie's "History of Williamsburg", c 21, writes about the history of Indiantown Presbyterian Church between 1819 and 1830.
