Will of Margaret Strane: In the Name of God Amen This 23d day of
September One thousand Seven hundred and Seventy four I Margaret
Strane of Prince Fredericks Parish Craven County and Province of
South Carolina planter being very weak in body but in Perfect
Mind and Memory and Calling to mind the Mortallity of my Body
and that it is appointed for all Mankind once to die, do make
and Ordain this my last Will and Testament that is to say
principally and first of all I recommed my Soul into the hands
of God who gave it & my body to the Earth to be burried in
descent Christian like manner nothing doughting but at the
general Resurrection I shall received the same again by the
Almighty power of God and touching such Wordly Estate wherewith
it hath pleased God to bless me with. I give & dispose of in the
manner following, Imprimus I first desire my funeral Charges and
all my Lawful debts first paid.
Item I give unto my well beloved grand Son Hugh Strane Winter
three young Negroes named Limerick, Bett & Pegg and their
increase to him and his Heirs for ever and all the Cattle and
Horses in my possession Branded HS with two Hundred and Seventy
pounds Currencey,
Item I give and bequeath unto my well beloved grandson James
Cooper two young Negroes named Cambrick and Sara with their
increase to him and his Heirs for ever & all the Cattle and
horses in my Possession Branded ?C,
Item I give and bequeath unto my well beloved grand-Daughter
Margaret Cooper all the Cattle in my Possession Branded M and
the best riding horse in my plantation and her Saddle likewise
her Bed and furniture to her and her Heirs for ever.
Item I give and bequeath unto my well beloved Nephew John Boyd
One hundred pounds Currency.
Item I give and bequeath to my Nices two Children Viz. Moses and
Isabel Scott fifty pounds each to them and the lawful Heirs of
their Body.
Item I give and bequeath unto my well beloved Son Hugh Winter
one pound Currency.
Item I give and bequeath unto my Well beloved grand Children
Vis. Hugh Strane Winter, James Cooper, Margaret Cooper and
Jannet Graham all the remaining part of my Estate to be equally
divided Share & Share alike their Legacies & Shares to be given
them eithe at their Marriages Respectively or when they arrive
at the age of Twenty one Years except their cattle which is my
desire shall be given them at my decease if any of the above
named Children should die before they arrive at the above term
of time their Lagacy or Lagacies, Share or Shares to be Equally
divided among the Survivors I likewise fully Impower my
Executors after Named to Sell and dispose of my Estate as they
shall see most convenient to the discharging the above mention'd
Legacies and Shares.
I likewise make Constitute, Nominate & appoint as only and Sole
Exectors of this my last Will and Testament Robert Dick, Robert
Petticrue & John Boyd, and I do hereby renounce revoke and
dissannul all former Wills and Testament by me in any ways made
before this time and I do hereby Ratify & Confirm this and no
other to be my last Will and Testament. In Witness whereof I
have hereunto Set my hand and Seal the day and Year above
written.

Straine to be her last Will & Testament In presence of us the
Subscribers.

The names of John and Benjamin Winston are among the list of
officers pensioned by the State of Virginia for service during
the Revolution.
"Joseph Winston, born in Virginia, 1746; d. near Germantown,
N.C., 1814. He joined a company of rangers in 1760; was twice
wounded in an Indian fight on the Greenbrier; was pensioned by
the Legislature for his gallantry; removed to Stokes County,
N.C., 1766; was its representative 1775-6, and was appointed a
Major; was in several fights victorious, and for his bravery at
King's Mountain, where he commanded the right wing, had a sword
voted him by the Legislature. Commissioner to Cherokee Indians,
with whom a treaty was made in 1777; first Senator from Stokes
County, in 1791; and Member of Legislature repeatedly until
1812; M.C. 1793-5 and 1803-7. His son, General Joseph, d. in
Platte County, Mo., Mch. 24th, 1810, aged 52. He filled an
important position in Stokes County, N.C.; served in the war
1812; was for many years in the State Legislature, and was a
Major-General of Militia" ---- Drake's Dic. Am Biog."
