Letter from John P. Marshall at Camp Winder, to George W. Randolph.

Camp Winder

Near Richmond, April 17, 1862

Hon. Geo. W. Randolph

Dr Sir

I fear that you will consider this naught else than an act of unmitigated presumption on the part of your humble correspondent. But hear the extenuating causes.

Let me first however, note the purpose I have in addressing you.

I earnestly beg of you to grant me a commission in the Confederate Army.

In making this application I am actuated by no boyish whims.

Having left my home in Maryland I have left behind me all that is dear and valuable to me upon this earth. I have left an aged father and young sister without a protecting hand to interpose between them and the wrath of a tyrannical oppressor. The only hope I have upon this earth is to see the Confederacy permanently established and Maryland annexed to it. The system of Napoleon was to place those around him who had everything to hope from victory and everything to dread from defeat. Surely fortune has thus befriended me, if I may use the expression.

I have been a soldier of the Confederate Army since June last and have reenlisted. I have friends over here who would have been kind enough to have handed this to you in person but I am one who hopes to live by my own exertions. Besides a nine months service I have no military experience. I had the fortune however to graduate with the first honor at Georgetown College, District of Columbia and think that with close application I could fit myself for the station to which I beg you to raise me. Be so kind as to address a reply to:

Your most obedient servant

John P. Marshall

Capt. E. Barry's Comp Md Line
Richmond Va.

From: [email protected]

Below (above) is a letter from a Confederate soldier to his superiors in Richmond requesting a captaincy at the urging of his commanding officer. This was June 1862 at the end of the enlistment period of the 1st Maryland Inf. when their year expired. After this they went to units of other states and many formed the 2nd Md Inf. Practically every infantry, cavalry and artillery unit in the Southern army had a Marylander in it usually brought there by a relative from that state. The Confederate navy and marines had many Marylanders serving. The 2nd in command of the Hunley was a Marylander.

John P. Marshall was one of my many ancestors who served in the Confederacy. I have found none from Maryland who served for the other side. Georgetown U had in their archives the original handwritten letter and a picture of John and his father Robert Marshall who lived in Southern Prince George's County in the area of where the Washington beltway and Andrews AFB now are. Oldfields. John had graduated from Georgetown College as it was known in those days. This is all I can find of him. There is no record of him in the 2nd Maryland. I surmise that he was eventually killed shortly after this letter was written. A cousin gave me a copy of a letter written by his father in early 1866 to a brother in Virginia stating how he was thinking of coming to his brothers farm to live since there was nothing left here for him. He mentions the passing of his wife and daughter to his brother. Nothing about his son. So I figure he was already deceased. The letter is short but a good example of why the war was fought. The real reason it was fought. Read it and see what you think.

Thanks
Rick in Olde Maryland.
