Notes

2 Ambrose Cobbs b: 1635 d: OCT 1683 + Mary Ann "Unknown" Cobbs.

"Ambrose Cobbs became a church warden of Bruton Parish, at Williamsburg, and his name can be found today on a plaque commemorating the early history of that parish, on the wall of Bruton Parish Church, Colonial Williamsburg.

On 18 Mar 1716; Ambrose Cobbs, John Marat (Jean Marot), and John Hubbard were given bond for a license to keep an "ordinary in a dwelling house in Williamsburg; York Co, VA, to supply lodging and diet for travelers and stabelage." At the time of his death in 1687, Ambrose owned lots #43 & 44, in Williamsburg. On 10 Dec 1725, Ambrose' son Robert sold these lots to a merchant, John Blair.

A curious feature about Ambrose' Will which was proved on 16 Jun 1718, in York County, Virginia, is that although he had at least two daughters, Elizabeth and Frances, he specifically named only his sons as heirs of his estate. Further, the list of persons who witnessed his signature to his Will, included the names of Matthew Pierce (stepson) and a Joseph Frith and an Ann Frith. The identity of the Frith couple remains a mystery. Nowhere else does the name Frith appear in our family genealogy. It was customary in that day for either family members or prominent and respected citizens of the community to affix their signatures to a legal document. It is speculation on the part of this author that Ann Frith may have been an heretofore unrecognized additional daughter of Ambrose, who married Joseph Frith. It is a fact that the estate of one Joseph Frith of York County, Virginia, was legally inventoried in 1712.

All children except Thomas eventually moved away from York County. Thomas did inherit land on Queen's Creek, in that part of Henrico County that later became part of Chesterfield County, from his father. Thomas passed this land on to his sons."

Notes

"Letter dated 9/1862 from Howard with the Confederate Army in Maryland to father B. W. in Woodville, MS: "...I found Oscar badly though not dangerously wounded in the jaw. The poor fellow was lying in a tent with blood and dirt all over his clothes and his head swollen out of all shape but still he was in good spirits. I stayed with him but a little while before he was placed in an ambulance and sent to Warrington.....I have not heard from him since... I expect Oscar will get a furlow if not a discharge and come home. At least I hope he will as his jaw bone is badly fractured with a canister shot." Howard notes this meeting took place early August 1862 three days after Second Bull Run battle."
