  • RESIDENCE: County Cork, Ireland and Bristol, England

Mother: GULIELMA MARIA SPRINGETT

  3. +William PENN III
Family 2 : Lady Jenko MACPHERSON

Notes

""Although the great Quaker had 14 children, only William, his eldest son by his first marriage, and Thomas, his second son by his second marriage, have living descendants. These derive from Christina Gulielma, a granddaughter of William his eldest son, and Sophia Margaret, daughter of Thomas."

"William Penn, Jr legally had two wives. Lady Jenko MacPherson was listed as a traveling companion, and Mary Jones whom he m. 12 Nov 1698 at Bristol Friends Meeting."

"Now some of our Quaker people came from Herfordshire England over to Mass. then to Shrewsbury (according to an elderly cousin of mine) I have an e-mail address of a Penn in England and have sent him the information I have. Perhaps he can fill in the blanks for us.
The Penn information I have was handed down to me from my mother, my Great Aunt did a lot of the research. A great deal of it was common knowledge in our family about our Penn lineage."

History of Monmouth Co., NJ: "It is said that William Penn, the founder of Philadelphia, had an reprobate son, and from him descended the Penns of Cumberland, Burlington and Ocean Counties......"

It appears that none of William Penn's sons or legitimate grandsons remained in America. They worked, or visited, here at various periods in the 18th century to govern the colony and administer their business, only as required.

The following was provided to me by William Lees reference to Thomas's children, taken from a letter quoted in
WATSON'S ANNALS of PHILADELPHIA and PENNSYLVANIA, Vol 1 Ch 5"

"It would seem, however, he was sufficiently susceptible of softer and warmer emotions, he having, as it was said, brought with him to this country, as an occasional companion, a person of much show and display, called "Lady Jenks", who passed her time "remote from city", in the then wilds of Bucks County; but her beauty, accomplishments, and expert horsemanship, made her soon of notoriety enough, to make every woman, old and young, in the country, her chronicle; they said she rode with him at fox-huntings, and at the famous "Indian Walk", in men's clothes, (meaning, without doubt, their simple conceptions of the masculine appearance of her riding habit array) garbed, like a man in petticoat.

Old Samuel Preston, Esq., to whom I am chiefly indebted for facts concerning her, (often, however, confirmed by others) tells me it was well understood there, that she was the mother of Thomas Jenks, Esq.,* a member of Friends, --- a very handsome, highly esteemed, and useful citizen, who lived to about the year 1797, and received his education and support through the means supplied by his father, Thomas Penn.

Indeed, Thomas Penn was so much in "the style of an English gentleman", says my informant, that "he had two other natural sons by other women, which he also provided for, and they also raised respectable families".

the footnote which says that Jenks is more likely to have associated with William Penn (son of the Founder) rather than Thomas:"

*His son, Thomas Jenks, was a Senator at the time of the formation of the state Constitution, --- a very smart man.
**There is some confusion and incoherency of dates. Jenks (her son) was born in 1700, and she (Lady Jenks) may have joined herself to Wm. Penn, Jr., when he arrived in 1703. There was certainly a Lady Jenks, whose name was Macpherson. She afterwards married Wiggend, of Bucks county, and left a son who has now many descendants in Bucks County.

note: The parenthetical items in the foregoing footnote were added by D.L. Jones for clarification.

My father, Ruall C. Jones, and Grandfather, Lawrence Jones were born in Jennings Twp., Crawford County. My Grandmother, Elizabeth Baker was also born there.

My G Grandfather George H. Penn, alias Jones, moved to Crawford in 1868
after serving in the New Jersey 1st Cavalry from 1861 to 1865, the latter 18 months was in Andersonville as a POW. We believe he may have descended from an illegitimate son of William Penn, Jr. He married Tabitha Padgett in 1868.

I have much information, both factual and speculative on these families. Don Jones
