His Step father, John Gibson in his will left John Gotea 400 acres. "John Jr (Sr) dies in 1818. In his will, he mentions his eldest son George Cooper Gotea (who is not yet 21) and his PRESENT wife Elizabeth, and his daughter Elinor now Elinor Douglas. (15 in 13) Then there is a petition by Samuel T. Cooper showing that John Jr. (Sr.) "died and possessed of 400 acres of land. Executors, Hugh McCutchen, Alexander McKnight and William Gibson, Jr.,

SCMAR, Vol. I, Summer 1973, No. 3, p.137 Williamsburg County Will Book A Page 31. Will of John Gotea Senr of state and district aforesaid, being spared to the present time and weak in body. To my dear & loving wife the use of my house and plantation whereon I now reside. My negro fellow Sam, with all my household and kitchen furniture for the joint use of my wife & such children as I may have by her at the time of my decease. When my eldest son George Cooper Gotea arrives at age of twenty-one, or should die before that period, when the next to him arrives at that age, then all my property be equally divided between my present wife Elizabeth & all the children I may have by my said wife Elizabeth. My eldest daughter Elinor Gotea now Elinor Douglass do receive 25 cents. My friends Hugh McCutchin, Alexander McKnight, & William Gibson Ju'r, executors. 24 Mar. 1818.


"John Gotea Senior (will dated March 24, 1818) married Elizabeth Barnes.
I know nothing about my great grandmother, not even her given name. Nor do I know anything about my great grandfather. They had ____ children. My grandfather had a brother whose name I do know. He was the father of George Gotea who married Jennie Heddleston, and Jane Gotea who was the wife of Thomas McCants. I am certain that there was also a sister who was the mother of the McCants family."

Description:In conjunction with the opening of Grant’s Overland Campaign, Maj. Gen. Benjamin Butler’s Army of the James, 33,000 strong, disembarked from transports at Bermuda Hundred on May 5, threatening the Richmond-Petersburg Railroad. On May 6, Hagood’s brigade stopped initial Federal probes at Port Walthall Junction. On May 7, a Union division drove Hagood’s and Johnson’s brigades from the depot and cut the railroad at Port Walthall Junction. Confederate defenders retired behind Swift Run Creek and awaited reinforcements. Result(s): Union victory
