Encyclopedia of Virginia Biography, Volume II VIII--Prominent Persons: Philip Pendleton Cooke: was born at Martinsburg, Virginia, October 26, 1816, a son of John Rogers Cooke. He was graduated at Princeton in the class of 1834, then took up the study of law with his father, and was engaged in the practice of his profession before he had attained his majority. He had, however, little love for legal work, preferring literature and field sports, to both of which he was devoted. Prior to his death he had become famous as the greatest huntsman in the Shenandoah Valley. His reputation as a poet is a most creditable one; at an early period he published a number of poems in the "Knickerbocker Magazine," and was also a frequent contributor to the "Southern Literary Messenger." He was stately and impressive in manner and a brilliant conversationalist. His only publication in book form was "Froissart Ballads, and other Poems," Philadelphia, 1847. At the time of his death he was publishing serially a romance entitled "Chevalier Merlin." His short lyrics, "Florence Vane," "To My Daughter Lily," and "Rosa Lee," were very popular. The first named has been translated into many languages, and has been set to music by celebrated composers. Among his tales are "John Carpe," "The Crime of Andrew Blair," and "The Gregories of Hackwood." Mr. Cooke died January 20, 1850.

COOKE, Philip Pendleton, author, was born at Martinsburg, Va., Oct. 26, 1816; son of John Rogers and Maria (Pendleton) Cooke. He attended the Martinsburg academy and was graduated at the College of New Jersey in 1834. He studied law with his father, "dividing his time between Blackstone, poetry, and the chase." He wrote for the Knickerbocker Magazine, the Southern Literary Messenger, and the Winchester Virginian, contributing essays and poems of unusual merit. He was admitted to the bar in 1836 and was married the next year to Anne Corbin Taylor, daughter of Judge Nelson Burwell. In 1845 he removed to "The Vineyard," an estate of one thousand acres near Ashby's Gap, Va., where he was known as the "Nimrod of the Shenandoah." He published many novels in serial form and a metrical paraphrase of Froissart Ballads (1847). His lyric, Florence Vane, was widely translated and set to music. He died at "The Vineyard," Clark county, Va., Jan. 20, 1850.

The pattern of Cooke's life, 1816-1850, was typically that of a Virginia country gentleman; he could sharpen his literary talents only in the time he could spare from his affairs as master of an estate, lawyer, and leader in social activities. He was more noted among his neighbors as the best shot in Berkeley County than as an author. But his prose and poetry did receive recognition from leading literary men of his day; and this critical biography proves Cooke to be deserving of prominence in the cultural history of the South. "The second brother Maurice Langhorne (1787-1865) moved to Lynchburg, where his inherited wealth was fantastically increased by his successful forays in the Lynchburg tobacco market. Before he died, Maurice Langhorne built for his children the famous "Langhorne's Row," a set of four extravagant Greek Revival Lynchburg townhouses, whose architectural sophistication was unmatched anywhere in Virginia with the sole exception of Richmond." ^[S2330]
