The parish register states that "John Hereford Gentleman was buried at Holme Lacy 20th Dec 1698. I Charles R. Hereford visited the church and church yard in September 2000 and could not find John's grave. Pictures are in the file of church and yard." [S1670]

"At age 15, he lied about his age, and joined the confederate Army in March 1864. He served through the remainder of the Civil War as a member of Armstrong's Brigade, Harvey's Scouts, 28th MS Reg, Forrest's Cavalry, Army of TN.


When the War ended in May 1865, he returned to Madison Co. MS. He applied for Pension in 1914 and was residing with his son William Scott, Jr. and employed as a watchman when able. They had 13 children: Thomas Edward, Albert Hastings, Anna Mable, William Scott, Sidney, James Nicholas, Susan Elizabeth, Sallie Mamie, Addison Harvey, Benjamin Lamar, Iva Lucille, Ruth, Ruby Ethel."
