"He arrived Jamestown in 1643 from Shropshire England, and moved
at once to Northumberland Co. Va., later to St. Mary's, Md. He
had one son, Hugh II, called, confusingly, Hugh Sr. in some
writings. Hugh Lee died on or about 1658. " He was in Norfolk
County, VA, December 20, 1645
From Northampton Co., VA records, Robert Pitt of Isle of Wight
Co., merchant, gave a power of attorney to "my sone John Pitt"
to receive 2800 lb. tobo. from Hugh Lee. Dated 29 May 1650;
recorded 25 Oct 1652. Similarly, John Pitt appointed "my loving
friend William Thomas" attorney to receive 2800 lb. tobo. from
Hugh Lee. Dated 4 Mar 1651/52; recorded 25 Oct 1652.

"As the Governor's residence, it was certain to be maintained
and without expense to her. In the end, she was able to help the
rightful owner retrieve it. The upshot for Stone was less
desirable. His widow, Verlinda, lost The Governor's Field and
its house, which he had willed to her. Leonard Calvert's heir,
William, obtained it; but this outcome was probably sweetened by
his marriage to Stone's daughter Elizabeth.
"William Calvert promptly sold the house and land to an
innkeeper, Hugh Lee, who apparently had already been operating
an ordinary there. Soon afterwards Lee died and in 1662, his
widow sold the property to the Province. The house became a
combined ordinary and capitol building for meetings of the
courts and assembly, and around it began the development of St.
Mary's City."

"Heirs were named in an 1801 deed which is located in the
Charlotte County Courthouse. the fact that his heirs were all
nephews and great nephews would seem to indicate very strongly
that Edward was probably never married and left no children.
