In the years 1787 and 1788 William and Daniel Standard received
land grants from the state of South Carolina. The grants were

Soldiers of 1776: Lake Fort. He served under Capt. William
Standard, with Col. Abel Culp. Col. Abel Kolb's name was spelled
Abel Kolb, not Culp. He is buried beside the Great Pee Dee River
just upstream from the U.S. 15 bridge in Marlboro County, SC.
Across the River from Society Hill, SC.
Site of William Standard's grave is uncertain at this time, as
late as 1890, there was a cleared field in the fork of Back
Swamp and a small branch known as "Standard's old field".
Darlington News 5-12-1892 stated "on the farm of Mr. W. E.
Dargan there are two Indian Mounds - one of them is in the lower
part of Mr. Dargan's field and has been plowed over for many
years. Quantities of Indian relics covered the ground......"Not
far from this mound was the grave of Maj. Standard of
Revolutionary War fame and that part of the plantation was known
as the Standard old field." About a third of a mile east of
this mound in the fork of Black Swamp and Alligator creeks was
the other mound surrounded on all sides by swamp. It was from
five to eight feet high and covered between an eight and a
quarter of an acre."
*******
The earliest record of William Standard in Edgecombe co. NC that
I have seen is in ABSTRACTS OF WILLS EDGECOMBE CO. NC by
Williams and Griffin: on 13 Nov. 1761 he witnessed the will of
Thomas Goodson; that same year he bought a lot in Tarboro. He
married Dorothy Jones in Edgecombe on 7 Jan. 1763; by 10 May
1764 he witnessed a sale in Craven Co., SC between Abraham Odom
and Matthew Gibbs:Langley, SC DEED ABSTRACTRS 1719-1772, VOL. 4.
Daniel may have been there at the same time, atthough really the
only record I have seen is his being security for William's
wedding. We know Rachel was there in 1762 as she married Abel
Waddill then.

Marlboro County was created in 1798 from Cheraws District, which
was created in 1769 and discontinued. The county seat for
Marlboro is the city of Bennettsville which was founded in 1819
and named after Governor Thomas Bennett.
Marlboro County has always been largely agricultural and remains
so today. Legend has it that the land is so rich it once sold by
the pound instead of the acre. Marlboro was once one of South
Carolina's wealthiest counties, and Bennettsville and Clio
contain many beautiful homes from the county's gracious past.
The Jennings Brown House, now part of the Marlboro County
Historical Museum's holdings, was built in 1827 by one of
Bennettsville's first doctors. The house served as headquarters
for Major General Frank P. Blair during the Union occupation of
Bennettsville in 1865. The Marlboro County Courthouse served as
headquarters for General William Tecumseh Sherman.
The town of Blenheim is famous for its Mineral Spring. For
generations, people came from nearby towns to drink the water,
and Dr. C.R. May from Bennettsville is reputed to have
prescribed the spring water for stomach ailments. His "doctored
up" formula was bottled as a fiery blend of ginger ale in 1903.
Marlboro County is on the North Carolina border and is
contiguous with Scotland and Richmond Counties, NC. In South
Carolina, Marlboro County is contiguous with Dillon, Florence,
Darlington, and Chesterfield Counties.
If you have roots in Marlboro County, you should be aware that
many Marlboro County ancestors can be found in Robeson County,
North Carolina records.
Chesterfield County was formed by the County Court Act of 1785,
when Cheraw District was divided into Chesterfield, Darlington,
and Marlboro counties. Textbooks will tell you that Chesterfield
County was named after Lord Chesterfield, Philip Dormer
Stanhope, a close friend of George III; however, local tradition
states that the Craig family, who originally inhabited the
county seat, was influential in naming the county after the
county from which they came, Chesterfield County, Virginia.
Population grew slowly with Welch, French Huegenots,
Scotch-Irish, Germans, and English moving in mostly from other
of the colonized areas.
The Witherspoon property was across the road from William
Standard's property, they were neighbors. From Albion's Seed,
p. 664 he discusses the migration from North Britain to the
backcountry and that it became a movement of clans.
"A case in point was the family of Robert Witherspoon, a South
Carolinian of Border-Scots descent. Witherspoon recalled: ""My
grandfather and grandmother were born in Scotland abouth the
year 1670. They were cousins and both of one name. His name
was John and hers was Janet. They lived in their younger years
in or near Glasgow and in 1695 they left Scotland and settled in
Ireland in the county of Down....where he lived in good
circumstances and in good credit until the year 1734, (when) he
removed with his family to South Carolina.""
When Witherspoon used the word "family" he meant not merely a
nuclear or extended family but an entire clan. His
grandparents, their seven children, at least seventten
grandchildren and many uncles and cousins all sailed from
Belfast Lough to America and settled together in the same part
of the southern backcountry. Witherspoon described their exodus
in detail:
""We did not all come in one ship nor at one time. My uncles
William, James and David Wilson, and their families with Uncle
Gavin left Belfast in the beginning of the year 1732 and Uncle
Robert followed us in 36."" (Src: Robert Witherspoon,
"Recollections", in H. Roy Merrens, ed. The South Carolina
Scene: Contemporary Views, 1697-1774 (Columbia, SC 1977), 124.
For another description of clan migration, see Parton, Life of
Andrew Jackson, I, 46.).
Here was a classic example of serial migration or stream
migration which was comon in the peopling of the backcountry. A
few clan members opened a path for others, and werefollowed by a
steady stream of kin.
These North British border clans tended to settle together in
the American backcountry. An example was the Alexander clan.
In North Carolina's Catawba County, the first United States
Census of 1790 listed 300 nuclear families named Alexander."
