  2.  Mary Wade HAYNES
  3. +George Washington Parke CUSTIS
  4. +Eleanor Parke "Nellie" CUSTIS

Notes

He was enlisted only a few days when he died on November 5, 1781 of "camp fever." Died of disease while at Yorktown with Gen. Washington.
He was sent to King's College in New York. While there, he met Eleanor "Nelly" Calvert and they got engaged. Soon after he had left for New York, Patsy died at the age of 17. Martha was devastated, but told Jacky to remain in school. By December, Jacky wanted to return to Mt. Vernon, and on the way, on February 3, 1774, Jacky and Nelly were wed at Nelly's home Mt. Airy in Maryland, before heading further south.

Jacky and Nelly had six children: Eliza Parke Custis, Martha Parke Custis, Eleanor Parke Custis, a set of twins who died and George Washington Parke Custis. Nelly was in poor health after the birth of her own Nelly and as a result, the young baby was sent to Mt. Vernon to be nursed. With the birth and death of the twins and the subsequent birth of George Washington Parke Custis, he joined his sister at Mt. Vernon.

Bought 1100 acres where Arlington House would later be built by his son. Paid ¹11 per acre. The price was too high per his stepfather, President George Washington. 1778 1

Richard SMITH "the Immigrant"

ABT 1620 - 1689

ID Number: I76392

  • OCCUPATION: First Attorney General of Maryland
  • RESIDENCE: England and 1649 of St. Leonard's Creek, Calvert Co. MD
  • BIRTH: ABT 1620, England
  • DEATH: 1689, Calvert Co. Maryland
  • RESOURCES: See: notes [S2919]

Family 1 : Eleanor HATTON?
  1. +Richard SMITH
  2. +Walter SMITH of Patuxent River

Notes

"Richard was the the First Attorney General of Maryland and immigrated from England about February, 1649 (Colonial Dames of America in Ancestral Records and Portraits, Chapter I, 1969.)

Maryland Land Office records Liber 5, folio 188 indicate: Richard Smith, Gent. Immigrated Feb. 1649 and Liber 5, folio 188 also indicates Eleanor Smith wife of Richard Immigrated Aug 1651.

"Maryland Genealogies" by Thomas L. Hollowak, Vol. II, pg. 373, "Smith Family of Calvert County" by Christopher Johnston, "Richard Smith, the ancestor of this family, enters rights for himself in February 1649 and his wife Eleanor in August 1651 (Land Office, Lib. 5, fol. 188). He lived in Calvert County, and owned land on St. Leonard's Creek and in the neighborhood of Lyon's Creek. He was a lawyer by profession and he frequently appears in this capacity in the records of the Provincial Court. He was commissioned Attorney General of the Province, 28 September 1657 (MD. Arch., x, 542) and held office under Fendall's administration until 1660. In the commission he is styled "Lieutenant Richard Smith," doubtless indicating that he held this rank in the Provincial militia. He was elected, 10 April 1658, one of the Burgesses for Calvert County (Lib. S., fol. 26). He was not a member of the House which met 28 February 1659/60 (MD. Arch., i, 382), but he represented Calvert County in the Assembly which met in April 1661, and sat successively until 1667 (MD. Arch., i, 396, 426; ii, 8).

In 1665 he was Foreman of the Grand Jury of the Province (Lib. FF, Fol. 64). 30 February 1671, "Richard Smith of Calvert County" was summoned as a juror by the Provincial court and, not appearing, was fined 500 lbs. tobacco (Lib. JJ, fol. 264).

In the levy of November 1678, "Mr. Richard Smith Senior" had a credit of 900 lbs. tobacco in Calvert County (MD. Arch., vii, 103), and, 22 May 1679, "Richard Smith Senior" of Calvert County was cited to appear at St. Mary's on the 6th of July following to testify in regard to the will of John Gnammar deceased. The citation was returned "served," 4 June 1679 (Test. Proc., Lib. 11, fol. 92).

In November 1683 an act was passed establishing a port on Richard Smith's land at St. Leonard's Creek, and by the same act Richard Smith Junior was appointed one of the Commissioners for laying out towns and ports in Calvert County (MD. Arch., vii, 609, 611).

Richard Smith Senior was probably living in 1689 when his son Richard is styled "Richard Smith Junior" (MD. Arch., xii, 242), but neither his will nor any record of the administration of his estate appears on record. He probably died not long after 1689, when the records were very badly kept in consequence of the Revolution. A list of the Provincial Archives, compiled in 1695, states that from 13 July 1689 to 14 June 1692 no testamentary records were in existence (MD. Arch., xx, 200).

Eleanor wife of Richard Smith joined her husband, in 1665, in a deed conveying land in Calvert County. 18 February 1671, Richard Smith sues James Veitch about a tract called Smith's Joy, on St. Leonard's Creek, which the said Richard Smith and Eleanor his wife conveyed to the said James Veitch by deed dated 18 January 1664/5 (Lib. JJ, fol. 280).

18 December 1669, Mrs. Eleanor Smith was one of the ladies of Calvert County who petitioned the Provincial Court for a respite of the sentence of an unfortunate woman convicted of child murder, she having concealed the birth of her child. The petition was granted and the prisoner respited until the 18th of October following".

"Across the Years in Prince George's County" by Effie Gwynn Bowie, pg. 294, "Richard Smith, of St. Leonard's Creek, Calvert County, was born in England; entered rights for himself in February 1649 and for his wife Eleanor in August 1651. He was [a] lawyer, Attorney-General of the Province [MD] in 1657; House of Burgesses for Calvert, 1658; died probably shortly after 1690 (Colonial Dames Paper), at St. Leonard's Creek, Calvert County. He lived in Calvert Co., where he owned land in the neighborhood of Lyon's Creek".

Richard lived near Lyon's Creek, on St. Leonard's Cr., Calvert Co., MD and was a lawyer and planter. He was affiliated with the Protestant Church and was in the Maryland Militia as an Lieutenant by 1657."
