"I accessed your information on Reuben J. Palmer for an article
I am writing for the Montgomery County, Texas, Genealogical and
Historical quarterly, The Herald.
Reuben was the Montgomery County delegate to the Secession
Convention.
Also--the 1860 census record gives his birth state as Alabama,
not Virginia. I can't find any service record for him, but he
had 16 slaves in the 1860 census. In order to be exempted from
service, a man had to have 20 slaves. It was called the "Twenty
Nigger Law" by the men in the field, and they resented the rich
guys getting out of fighting. That elicited the phrase: A Rich
Man's War and a Poor Man's fight.
If you wish, I can send you a copy of the finished article for
placement on your site. Perhaps it would help others who are
researching this man. I am including footnotes referencing your
site."
