Mother: PHILIPPA PLANTAGENET of Clarence |
He was summoned to Parliament on 15 Oct 1397, and had a great
popular welcome. He was careful to do nothing to justify the
King Richard II's suspicions, but feeling his position to be
somewhat insecure, he returned to Ireland, whither his enemy,
the Duke of Surrey (his Brother-in-Law), was ordered to follow
and capture him. Ireland was Mortimer's chief care, but he
possessed little power there, the estates having been
devastated, and engaged in petty campaigns against the native
chieftains. While engaged in a rash attack on some of the
Leinster clans, was killed by O'Brien's men on 20 July 1398, and
was buried at Wigmore's Abbey. The Wigmore chronicler says that
he was riding unattended, attired in the Irish manner, in front
of his army, and was unrecognised by those who killed him. The
death of the heir to the throne at the hands of the Irish
induced King Richard II to undertake his last fatal expedition
to Ireland.
Roger Mortimer, Earl of March, who was killed in Ireland in
1398, married Eleanor Holland, sister of the Earl of Kent who
was murdered by the mob at Cirencester in 1400. By her he had
four children: Ann, Edmund (aged 8 in 1400), Roger (aged 7 in
1400), and Eleanor.
The mother married Edward Charleton, Lord of Powys, and died in
1405.
The boys were brought up in the household of the usurper Henry
IV, Edmund being the rightful King. Sir Edmund Mortimer, their
uncle, repudiated liability for their maintenance. The case came
before the King's Court of Common Pleas, 'in the white chamber
near the Exchequer'. The Court gave its decision by the mouth of
Sir John Markham, rejecting the appeal of Sir Edmund Mortimer
for the guardianship of his nephews, on the ground that no one
could claim to be the guardians of minors who were wards of the
King. In 1404 both boys were at Windsor Castle in charge of Sir
Hugh Waterton. In February 1405 Lady le Despenser (Constance,
daughter of the Duke of York) fled from Windsor with the two
Mortimer boys. They were followed and captured in a wood near
Cheltenham. In February 1406 they were handed over to the charge
of Sir John Pelham, at Pevensey. In 1409 Roger died. In 1413
Edmund came of age, and was with the army before Harfleur in
1415. He was made Governor of Ireland in 1423, and died there in
1425; a mild and pious Prince _ and rightful King. He was known
as 'Edmund the Good'.
Roger VI 1374-1398 m Eleanor Holland (Queen's niece) 4th EARL OF
MARCH brought up as Royal Ward, declared heir-presumptive but
died.
His son ROGER 1393- died 1408 did not succeed to estates; and
daughter: Eleanor d without issue. However the other daughter :-
