News/Obit* | 29 March 1904 | Obituary, An Old and Respected Citizen An- swers the Last Summons. Hugh King died at the residence of his son, Rev. J. P. King, in Madison township, early last Thursday morning after a gradual decline in health from afflictions due to old age. Hugh King was the son of Patrick King and was born in Huntington county, PA, May 16, 1819. In 1833 he came with his parents to this place and in 1839 married Annary Stoner. Nine children were born to this union. Four of these children are dead. The five living are Rev. J. P. King, George B. King, Mrs. Mary C. Stotts and Mrs. Mahala Skinner, of Madison township, and Mrs. Malona Spencer of Zanesville. His wife died November 5, 1856. In 1859 he married Angeline Stoner, a cousin of the wife of his first marriage, who now survives him. To this last union two children were born - one dead - and the other being H. H. King who now resides in Madison township. Mr. King was well known in north-eastern Muskingum county and commanded the respect of a large circle of friends. His early days were spent on the farm and he was an industrious and successful farmer. When he retired from farming he moved to Adamsville where he resided for a number of years or until he and his aged wife were unable to continue housekeeping. He and his wife then went to Madison township to reside with their children. Few men possessed the faculty of mingling with those around as Mr. King. He made every one in his presence feel at ease, and always had something interesting to say. His long life was one of general usefulnness and his kind expressions and good acts will live for many years to come. In spiritual matters Mr. King was not unmindful nor neglectful. He became a member of the M.P. church 65 years ago and retained his membership with that congregation until his death. Besides the sorrowing widow and children mentioned, three brothers are left to mourn their loss. They are Thomas, William and John King all residents of this county. Funeral took place Sunday forenoon. The services were largely attended and were conducted by Rev. O. V. Sharrock. The remains were laid to rest in the cemetery at that place. 13 |
