Occupation*   Blacksmith, Farmer
Note   Jacob was probably born a twin of brother Johann George. He was baptized 7/30/1756 in Lehigh Co., PA., sponsored by John Mathias Egner and his wife Ann Elizabeth. He and his older brothers went to Philadelphia to work in the blacksmith trade. A family tradition has it that Jacob was a drum-major in the American Army at Yorktown, VA at the surrender of General Cornwallis' Army.

After the war, Jacob lived in Old Town, Allegheny Co., MD, situated on the North bank of the Potomac River on the Western Maryland Railway. He was a farmer and blacksmith on leased land. In 1784 he moved to Wellersburg, Bedford Co. (now Somerset Co.), PA. In 1800 he made a trip to Muskingum Co., OH. to seek suitable land to move his family.

When Jacob and Catharine first arrived in Muskingum Co., OH in 1806 and located at Gilbert, Washington Twp, 7 miles up the Muskingum from Zanesville. In 1809 the rest of the family followed with other early settlers. Gilbert was located along the lowlands of the Muskingum River and they became afflicted with ague, a malarial type of fever. So often and seriously were they afflicted they soon after moved into the hills where a more healthful location was found, the air was more envigorating and healthful springs issued from almost every hillside. Jacob and others founded the New Hope German Lutheran Church in Salem Twp., Muskingum Co., OH. Jacob deeded 2 acres of land to the church for use as a cemetary for the consideration of four dollars. His wife Catharine was the first person buried on this land even before it was deeded to the church. In 1811 he settled on Lot 28 in Salem Twp. He was probably the areas first gunsmith.
