Ancestors and Descendants of Johann Friedrich and Henrietta Sophia Elizabeth Michael Lindekugel Family

We have heard from Jay Thexton who shared information on the Friedrich Linkekugel family and motivated us to finally provide a separate page for this family. We had previously heard from Shirley Adams McNamara who also furnished much information.

We believe Friedrich Lindekugel was brother to our Anna Elizabeth Lindekugel Severin since they are consistently found in the same areas after arrival in America. In addition the Lindekugels are listed as being of Rogatz in Germany and the Severins are listed as being of Angern in Germany on their immigration lists. These appear to be two small towns found near Magdeburg on a modern map of Germany. We have had some hesitation in assigning this particular village of Angern (among 14 in Germany) to the Severin family but are planning to take a second look at that. Unfortunately we have no information as to the parents of Friedrich and Anna Elizabeth Lindekugel Severin.

Germany to America - 1857

We have a copy of a ships manifest listing the Freidrich Lindekugel family (see link at bottom of page to view), unfortunately it does not give the name of the ship or a date on the page that we have. Jay Thexton tells us it was from a manifest for the ship New Orleans from Bremen Germany and that they arrived in the United States on November 4, 1857. We had previously found the name of Friedrichs wife on the list where German immigrants registered for their trip to the United States (ref. below.) Unlike the Severins the Lindekugels list a destination of Iowa and we suspect they were coming upon the invitation of the Severin family. The family list on the ships manifest is: Fr. Lindekugel, age 37, male, cooper, origin Rogatz, destination Iowa: Lisette, 34, female; Maria, 10; August, 7 yr 6 mo; Otto, 6; Emma, 2; Fritz, 1.

The ship's list matches fairly closely with the 1860 Jefferson, Clayton County, Iowa, census where the family is found not too far from the Christian Severin family: #1964 Fred Lindekugel, 39, farmer, born Prussia; Elizabeth, 40, born Prussia; Mary, 14, Iowa (all the children are listed as born Iowa while we know they were born Prussia); August, 12; Otto, 10; Emma, 8; William, 6. Descendants have mentioned that Fritz died aboard ship and this may be true if the passenger list is the one made at the time the ship left Bremen. We doubt that William and Fritz are one and the same in the census because of the age. William may have been another relative or a bound boy.

Iowa to Nebraska

By 1870 both the Lindekugel and Severin families had moved to Lancaster County, Nebraska. John Christian Severin is family #82 and the Fred Lindekugel family is #79 so they were even closer neighbors and no doubt immigrated together: #79 Fred Lindekugel, 49, farmer, $2000, $500, Prussia; Lisette, 47, Pr; Otto, 20, Pr; Emma, 15, Pr; Mina, 11, Ia; Fred, 9, Ia; Ernest, 8, Ia. Next door at #80 is August Lindekugel, 21, farmer, born Prussia. Since Freidrich has a farm valuation he must have purchased land. We find no record of a public land purchase but he may have purchased from a private party.

Jay Thexton tells us that Lizette died July 12, 1871 in Lancaster County, Nebraska, that she is buried in Martell Cemetery, and that her tombstone indicates she was born in 1822. Jay is descended from Ernest listed in the above census.

Sometime after 1873 Freidrich Lindekugel married a widow Henriette Meier. They are found in the 1880 census in Buda Precinct, Lancaster County, Nebraska: #65: Fred Lindekugel, 58, farmer, born Prussia; Henriette, 47, Prussia; Lewis Meier, 12, stepson, Missouri: Mary Meier, 9, Nebraska; Louisa Meier, 7, Nebraska; William Ibagdonr, 29, laborer, Nebraska. At #63 we find: August Lindekugel, 39, farmer, Prussia; Anna, 21, born Oldenberg; Clara, 2, Nebraska; William, born January 1880, Nebraska.

The Severin families are a little further away in this census but son Otto Lindekugel is #92, next door to #91 Christian Severin, age 67; Otto Lindekugel, 29, farmer, born Prussia; Caroline, 21, Mo (parents born Mecklenberg); Alvina, 3, Nebraska; Anna, 2, Nebraska.

More on the children of Johan Friedrich and Henrietta Sophia Elizabeth Michaels Lindekugel

Summary of the children:
1. Mary/Maria Lindekugel (ships list, 1860 census, married?)
2. August Lindekugel (ships list, 1860, 1870, 1880 census, more below)
3. Otto Lindekugel (ships list, 1860, 1870, 1880 census, more below)
4. Emma Lindekugel (ships list, 1860, 1870 census, married?)
5. Fritz Lindekugel (ships list, 1860 census as William not likely?)
6. Wilhelmina Lindekugel (1870 census as Mina, married?)
7. Fred Lindekugel (1870 census, 1880?)
8. Ernest Chris Lindekugel (1870 census, 1880?)

Re #5 Fritz - descendants believe he died on the ship voyage. This may be true if the ships list is that compiled when they boarded. The William found in the 1860 census is a little old to be Fritz and may be another relative or perhaps a bound boy?

August and Anna Albers Lindekugel

August Lindekugel married Anna Talke Helene Friederike Albers, daughter of Gerhard and Talka Gruisinke Albers, after 1870 in Lancaster County, Nebraska. They are found in 1900 in Alexandria Precinct, Thayer County, Nebraska, near brother Ernest and father Frederick. Chidren listed from the census are: Clara, born Apr 1878, Ne; William, born Jan 1880, Nebraska; Mary, born Nov 1882, Nebraska; Ernest, born April 1883, Nebraska; Henry, born Mar 1885, Nebraska; Charles, born March 1889, Nebraska; Marita, born March 1889, Nebraska; Walter, born November 1894, Nebraska.

Otto and Caroline Lindekugel

All we know of Caroline, wife of Otto, is that she was born Missouri, and her parents were born Mecklenberg, Germany, per the 1880 census. They married about 1875 per the 1900 census. They were no doubt married in Lancaster County, Nebraska and by 1880 had children Alvina, born about 1877 and Anna born about 1878 in Nebraska. We learn more from the 1900 census: North Fork, Saline County, Nebraska #115 Otto Lindekugel, born Apr 1851, age 49, married 25 years, born Gy, parents born Gy, immigrated 1856, farmer; Carrie L., Oct 1858, 41, married 25 yrs, born Mo, parents born Germany; George T., March 1881, 19, born Ne, father Gy, mother Mo, farmer; Amelia E, March 1881, 19, school teacher; Minnie, April 1884, 16, at school; Albert W, May 1892,8, at school; Arnold O, Dec 1895, 4.

Ernest Chris and Nannie Minnie Nicolay Lindekugel

From Shirley McNamara we have notes from the obituary for Ernest Chris Lindekugel, who died March 14, 1937 in Fillmore County, Nebraska. It indicates that he was born October 11, 1862 in Guttenberg, Iowa. He moved to Nebraska at the age of seven and settled at Cortland. He married Nannie Minnie Nicolay on December 24, 1885. She passed away on January 20, 1920/21. On September 24, 1924 he was again married to Frances Wiers. Funeral services were held in the South Lutheran Church on March 16th. It indicated that Fred Severin of Hallam was present. It does not indicate place of burial.

They are found in the 1900 census in Alexandria Precinct, Thayer County, Nebraska: 120 121 Ernest Lindekugel, Oct 1862, 38, married 12 yr Ia, GY, Gy; Nanna, wife, Apr 1866, 34, m 12, 5 born 4 living, In Gy Gy; Lora, daughter, Sept 1892, 7, Ne, Ia, In, at school (indexed as Ida); Nora, Oct 1894, 5; Tillie, Jul 1897, 2; Grace, Mar 1899, 1;
