The Shriver (Schreiber) Family
Lorentz Schreiber, was born in Germany as were his parents, and his wife, Margarete. He died in 1684.
Andreas Shriver (Schreiber), son of Jost and Anna Schreiber, was born in September 1673, in Olsenborn, Germany.
He was married in August 1706, to Mrs. Anna Margaretta Hess Jung (Young) who was born in 1673, in Alsenborn.
In 1721, conditions in Alsenborn (a small town located 30 miles northwest of Speyer in the Palatinate) were so unbearable that Andrew Schreiber a resident of that place, decided to leave Alsenborn, and with his family make the long trip to Pennsylvania.
On May 13th, 1721 Rev. John Mueller or (Miller), the minister of the Reformed Church, copied from the church protocol the baptismal and wedding records of this family. It consisted at this time of Andrew (Andreas) Schreiber, his wife Anna Margaretha, stepson David Young born 1699, Ludwig Schreiber born 1709, Andrew Jr. born 1712 and Anna Margaretha born 1715. The family had been members of this church for generations. The wife died in 1722 or 1723.
Andreas was married/2 to Maria Barbara Weber.
The Schreiber family landed at Philadelphia in the fall of 1721; the trip took nearly 1/2 year. They then moved into the Goshenhoppen neighborhood, Perkiomen Valley, which is in northern Montgomery County. Goshenhoppen was one of the oldest German settlements in Pennsylvania and many families from the Palatinate remained there among relatives and friends until the time that they could support themselves.
He died in “The Trappe,” near Schuykill, Pennsylvania, about January 1780 and his widow married John Herger, who lived in the same place.
Andrew Shriver Jr., son of Andreas Shriver and Anna Margaretta Hess, was born in 1712.
He learned the trade of tanner and shoemaker. The business of tanning was carried on by succeeding generations of Shrivers. As late as 1890 Louis E. and H. Wirt Shriver (great-great grandsons of Andrew Jr) were engaged in this business at Union Mills, Carroll County, Maryland.
