Welcome!

Welcome to our website dedicated to genealogical research in Montana.  Our site offers several resources to aid your search.  We hope you will find them useful.

If your ancestor was in Montana before 31 December 1929, why not honor them in our First Families and Early Settlers Project?  A complete index of names appearing in Volumes 1 and 2 is online.  Although both volumes are available for purchase, we are temporarily out of Volume 1.  It is being reprinted and will be available by spring 2009.

We are now accepting applications for inclusion in Volume 3.

Thanks to a tremendous amount of work from several of our members, we are also very proud to announce the opening of our State Genealogical Library, located on the 2nd floor of the Lewis & Clark Public Library in Helena.  Our extensive catalog, which covers more than just Montana resources, is online at

http://mtscprod.msl.mt.gov/uhtbin/cgisirsi/x/0/0/49?user_id=MT-GENWEB&password

We have also indexed the death indexes for the state from what was recorded in the late 1800’s to 2002.  By January 2009 we will also have a cd available in excel format of Montana deaths from 2003 thru 2007.

The Montana State Genealogical Society is nearing completion of our index of the 1930 US Census for Montana compiled by our members, many of whom have lived in their communities for years or generations.  Consequently we feel this will offer a more accurate index than can be found elsewhere.  Check back in the upcoming months and we hope to have it on-line.

If you are looking for a local person to help you with your Montana research, click here or contact one of our local societies.  Many have publications or data on line to help you.

If you are planning a research trip to our state, why not schedule it around our Annual Conference which is held the last weekend in September?  For 2009, we will be celebrating our 20th Anniversary at the Colonial Red Lion in Helena on the 24th, 25th, and 26th of September.

Good luck in researching your roots in Big Sky Country!
