1930 Census Index
In 1930,
On our index, the ED# (Enumeration District #) is a combination
of the number in the CO (county) column, a hyphen, and then the number found in
the ED# column. Thus: Beaverhead’s
first ED # is 1-1. When the voting
district or precinct changes, the ED# for Beaverhead would change to 1-2, 1-3,
1-4, etc. That ED# appears on each
census page in the upper right-hand corner. Likewise, Yellowstone Co’s ED
numbers would read: 56-1; 56-2;
56-3, etc., as would all the other 54 counties in between.
The column headings on each page are: LINE, SURNAME, GIVEN NAME, CO #, ED#,
CITY/TWP, PG#, SH# AND COMMENTS.
Each page has 100 names, divided into 2 sheets: 1A & 1B, 2A &
2B, etc. When the Enumeration
District changes, the sheet numbers begin over again. However, the page numbers should
increase within the county, one by one:
pg 101/102/103/104, etc. All
the other columns are self explanatory.
Following is the index, showing all names, for 1930 and for all
counties whose indexing has been completed as of September, 2009. While it is probably not perfect, it has
been diligently indexed and proofed by many volunteers over several years. The work has been done to the best of
their ability to read and comprehend the spelling of those original census
takers in 1930.
The committee for this project of the Montana State Genealogical
Society hopes you will succeed in locating your 1930
