 The population of Missoula county in the 2010 U.S. Census was 109,299 making it the second most populous county in Montana behind Yellowstone county. The 2012 U.S. Census estimated the population as 110,977 which means there are 36 people per square mile. Missoula county is 2,618 square miles in size.

The county of Missoula was founded on February 2, 1865. It is one of the original 9 counties. Missoula county was originally part of the Washington Territory and was incorporated in 1860. The Missoula county of today became a part of the U.S. through the Oregon Treaty on June 14, 1846.
