John D. Cato and Martha Whatley Bible

The following information has been copied from a family Bible belonging to John D. Cato and Martha Whatley of Warren County.  Their daughter Corinne (Powell, Grimes) Smith is buried in Glenwood Cemetery as is Martha Whatley Cato. I am unsure which other family members may have lived in Yazoo.  I do know that Corinne and her third husband, W.J. Smith, raised the children of her brother James after his death (Alice, James, Robert).

The Bible itself was published in Hartford by Sumner and Goodman in 1846.  I have been told that it and other prized possessions of the family were wrapped in blankets and hidden in a hollow log during the siege of Vicksburg.  The Bible is fragile- possessing evident water damage- and the writing in the family section difficult to read. Inside the Bible are several personal items - a pressed flower (pages 300-301), two poems "A Thanksgiving Note" and "Something to Be Thankful For" clipped from a newspaper (pages 140-141), a newspaper picture of a young man in what appears to be a military school uniform (pages 498-499), a hand-stitched bookmark (pages 366-367), a lock of hair (pages 472-473), another poem "Sweet Summer-time" clipped from a newspaper (pages 524-515), red and silver printed foil (pages 82-83 of the Apocrypha), and more pressed flowers (pages 628-629).

The Cato/Whatley Bible was left to my husband, Frank Eugene Lilley, by his maternal grandmother, Alice Byron Cato Weissinger, daughter of James White Cato.  She died in 1974.  I have been told by her daughters that the items in the Bible were never moved during the time their mother possessed the Bible.  We have honored her practice of leaving the items in their places.

The Family Record section is transcribed below.
