Old Cumberland

Old Cumberland was once called Choctaw Ridge.  Cumberland was the thriving industrial trade and religious center of a wide territory.  It was founded around 1845.

The first recorded settlement was made by William Anderson in 1845.  His house was built by Marion Quinn and Jim Henley in 1845.

In 1857 two Mexican brothers, O.C  & T.j Davis, opened the first store at Old Cumberland. In 1859, J.M. White and his brother did business for a short time and were  succeeded by Davis, Long & Company. The place was then known as “davis’ Store”.

Also around 1859 two Germans, Otto and Ralph Goldberger opened a general mercantile store.

After the war a post office was established called  “Choctaw Ridge”.

William Robinson and M.M. McElroy each built a storehouse and began business. 

There were 12- 15 flourishing business’ in Cumberland around 1870.

By 1895 Cumberland had grown into a village of some 500 inhabitants.  It had three churches and a high school.  There was once a short lived Populist Newspaper published in Cumberland by Joe Marshall.
