DOCTORS

_______________

ALL OF THE DOCTORS DID THE VERY BEST THEY KNEW WITHIN THE SCOPE OF THE TRAINING AND MEDICAL KNOWLEDGE AVAILABLE IN THE PERID FROM 1900 TO 1930.

THEY TRAVELED IN A BUGGY OR ON HORSEBACK, AND EVENTUALLY BY CAR.  THEY WOULD GO IN THE SCORCHING SUN, THE WHIRLING SNOW, THE RAGING WIND, OR WHEN IT WAS RAINING AND LIGHTNIG STREAKED THE SKEY.  SOMETIMES THEY WOULD LEAVE THE BUGGY AND WALK UP A TRAIL TO A REMOTE HOUSE TO SEE A PATIENT.

BECAUSE OF LIMITED COMMUNICATIONS, GETTING A DOCTOR IMMEDIATELY WAS A VERY DIFFICULT TASK.

PEOPLE WERE SELDOM TREATED AT THE DOCTOR'S OFFICE OR HIS HOME. MOST OF THE TIME THEY DID NOT HAVE OFFICES.

A FAMILY WOULD USUALLY SEND FOR A DOCTOR ONLY AFTER THE PATIENT GOT VERY LOW OR ALMOST DEAD.  THE DOCTOR USUALLY TALKED TO THE PATIENT AND FAMILY FOR THIRTY MINUTES TO AN HOUR CALMLY REASSURING THE FAMILY I THE PATIENT HAD A CHANCE TO LIVE.  HIS "BEDSIDE MANNER" HAD A VERY IMPORTANT THERAPEUTIC EFFECT.  IF THE PATIENT WAS EXPECTED TO DIE WITHIN THE NIGHT THE DOCTOR WOULD STAY WITH THE PATIENT UNTIL THE NEXT DAY.

_______________

SINCE DOCTORS WERE SCARCE, THE EARLY SETTLERS UTILIZED A MIDWIFE SYSTEM.  SHE WAS USUALLY AN OLDER WOMAN WITH THE EXPERIENCE OF HAVING MANY BABIES OF HER OWN AND ATTENDING AND AIDING OTHER WOMEN IN THE BIRTH OF THEIR CHILDREN.

ONE WOMAN IN THE COMMUNITY HAD SIXTEEN CHILDREN, TWELVE OF WHOM SHE AND HER HUSBAND REARED TO ADULTHOOD.

Dr. J P Synott was one of the Webster County Mississippi Doctors.  I believe that he was in or around Webster County in 1927. He was the Doctor for my Grandmother who died while giving birth to her last child. He was able to save the child but not the mother.  Please correct me if I am incorrect.

Dr. Thomas Jefferson Greer was born in Davidson County, TN, the son of General John Greer and Mary Rhea Buckingham.  He studied medicine at the Lexington School of Medicine and came to Grenada, Yalobusha (now Grenada) County, MS in the 1830's, where he married Harriet Adeline Redditt.   After the birth of their first child in 1840 they moved to Choctaw County and settled in the Walthall/Belfountaine area, where he set up practice.

John Rhea Greer, Thomas's son, became a doctor after his service in the Civil War and practiced in the Cumberland area.

Ruben Thomas Greer, John's son, also became a doctor and practiced in Monroe, LA.

DR. WILSON GEORGE.-- DR GEORGE WAS A HIGHLY RESPECTED MAN IN THE MANTEE AREA. HIS TRAINING MAY NOT HAVE BEEN AS EXTENSIVE AS THAT OF OTHER PHYSICIANS BUT THE PSYCHOLOGY OF HIS BEDSIDE MANNER  MAY HAVE BEEN MORE EFFECTIVE THAN ANY MEDICINE IN HIS SADDLE BAG.

A SADDLE BAG HAD TWO KITS OR POUCHES CONNECTED WITH A STRONG LEATHER STRAP. THEY WERE PLACED ACROSS THE HORSE'S BACK JUST BEHIND OR ACROSS THE SADDLE, AND WERE BALANCED TO PREVENT THEM FROM SLIPPING OFF.

DR. HUGH CURRY-- WAS A YOUNG DOCTOR FROM THE UNIVERSITY OF TENNESSEE MEDICAL COLLEGE IN MEMPHIS. HE CAME TO MANTEE ABOUT 1912.
