RAY – WARRINGTON FAMILY BIBLE
Submitted by Vida
Brooks Hughes on July 7, 2006
Vida Hughes is the granddaughter of Mary Ann Warrington and
Sidney
Haywood Ray
The information submitted here is from three different bibles kept by Mary Ann (Warrington) Ray over the course of her life. She lived in the Poolville and Myrtle area of Union County for many years where she was a school teacher. Mary Ann's grandfather, John S. Warrington and wife Ann Carr Warrington, arrived in the area of Tippah County that would later become Union County before 1845, from Wayne County, Tennessee. She married Sidney Haywood Ray in New Albany on December 23, 1896. S.H. Ray was the son of Sidney Owen Ray, Civil War Soldier, and grandson of James B. Ray who also had moved his family to the part of Tippah County that would later become Union County before 1845 from Pickens County, AL. James B. Ray's father, Frederick Ray, was a Revolutionary War Soldier who lived in Virginia. In the late 1700's the Ray family left Virginia and moved to North Carolina and Georgia before settling in Tuscaloosa County, Alabama in the 1820's. They were Methodists and instrumental in starting Methodist Churches at every stop they made from Virginia to Alabama. Mary Ann and S.H. Ray moved their family to Navarro County Texas in September 1916. They later moved to Arkansas and then back to Mississippi where they were living when they divorced on April 26, 1936. Mary Ann lived the rest of her life at the homes of her children in Texas and Arkansas. She is buried in the Rose Hill Cemetery, Blooming Grove, Texas, near her four year old son that died two months after the family arrived in Blooming Grove in 1916. Daughter Lalia and son James are also buried there.
