BROWNS LANDING, EUDOCIA SCHOOL, MCMULLEN posted by Maude Schuyler Clay on Thursday, June 2, 2005

Has anyone ever heard of a female school or college called Eudocia ? The spelling may not be right, but my great grandmother, Ann Eleanor Powers McMullen, who was born in Carroll County in 1840's and married Nathan James McMullen of Tallahatchie Co. around 1860 was said to have attended this school. It was unusual for girls at that time to go to any institution of higher learning. Her daughter, my grandmother Minnie Maude McMullen May, went to Blue Mountain, another school in Miss. around 1900, but this Eudocia Female College is a different and I think much earlier one. (It may even have been in Georgia or Alabama, not Mississippi.) Ann Eleanor Powers came to Tallhatchie County to be the governess for her cousins the Browns of Brown's Landing near Swan Lake and Glendora and this was on the Tallhatchie River. There is an old family cemetery out there called Bonnette Lake Cemetery where N.J. McMullen was buried in 1900 with several Browns and Whiteheads and McCalebs. This place was also known as Graball Landing. ANY info about early schools in Talla. County (or even Miss.) would be wonderful. I live in Sumner, am a photographer and am fascinated by Tallahachie County and all its colorful history. Maude Schuyler Cay
