TALLAHATCHIE COUNTY

BOARD OF SUPERVISORS

ATTORNEY & Clerk

The first form of local Government in Tallahatchie was known as "The Board of Police". Their actions or decisions made by the Board were as they are today. They made appointments for other boards and commissions. They appointed Road Overseers to take care of the roads, build, and make repairs to the roads. They drew or mapped the County into Districts, decided on where to build bridges, jail, courthouse. They set the tax rate to collect taxes. They would fine any member that wasn't present at the meetings. The fine was $10.00 to $20.00. When one of the Board members resigned they would order an election to be held to elect another member. In the early 1800s the Board of Police set Tole rates for bridges and ferries that cross the creeks and rivers. Two ORDERS were issued that a tole rate to cross the Charleston and Tallahatchie Turnpike was to:wit, Waggon and Team---per trip----$1.00, Carriages---$.50 per trip, Man and Horse-- 6 1/4, Foot Man-- 3, Loose Horse---6 1/2, Ordered and signed February 2, 1841.
