DANNY S. VAIL

BOONEVILLE, Miss. - A man visiting his parents for the holidays died attempting to rescue his mother from her burning home early yesterday morning, authorities said.

The fire killed former Memphian Danny S. Vail, 33, of Atlantic Beach, Fla., and his mother, Mrs. Ruth Sanders Vail, 68. It started about 3 a.m., possibly in the utility room of the two-story brick home, said Fire Chief Frank Fleming.

Fleming said Vail and three other family members had escaped, but Vail went back inside to rescue his mother.

His father, Stewart Vail, was slightly injured when he tried to enter the house by breaking a basement window, relatives.

Mrs. Vail, 68, along with their son, Danny Smith Vail, 34, were killed in a house fire on Dec. 21, 1985.

Vail is survived by one son, Charles Vail of Senatobia; a daughter, Carol Vail Thompson of St. Louis, Mo.; three brothers, Jesse Vail of .Jacksonville, N. C., Ray Vail of Montpelier, Miss., and W. D. Vail of San Antonio, Texas; one sister, Mrs. Virginia Finnie of Lake Charles, La.; and six grandchildren, Meredith, Adrienne and Jim Thompson of St. Louis, Kimberley and Chuck Vail of Senatobia and Natalie Vail of Grenada.

Memorials may be given to the First Methodist Church in Booneville.

QUITMAN STEWART VAIL

Retired Booneville businessman Quitman Stewart Vail, 75, died at his residence on Wildwood Drive Friday, Nov. 27, after 10 months of failing health.

Services were Saturday, Nov. 28, at 4 p.m. at McMillan Funeral Home with the Revs. Bill Kemp and Bill Wallace officiating. Graveside services were Sunday, Nov. 29, at 3 p.m. in Harpersville Memorial Park near Forrest, Miss.

Vail was born in 1912 In Montpelier. He graduated from the Clay County High Agricultural High School in Pheba. He graduated from Mississippi State University in 1937.

He taught school at Harperville Agricultural High School for 2-1/2 years.

After leaving the teaching profession, Vail began a career as a county agent with the Mississippi Extension Service in New Albany. During the next 15 years, he served as county agent there and in Pontotoc and Coahoma Counties. During that time, he also received his master's degree.

In 1952, he received the Distinguished Service Award from the National County Agents Association at the national convention.

In 1954, Vail went into business and moved to Booneville.

He opened a Vail and Baddour Store here, eventually expanding to five stores - two in Booneville and one each in Ripley, Iuka and Jackson. Tenn.

These stores today are known as Fred's.

After moving to Booneville, Vail served on the Boy Scout Committee of the First United Methodist Church, where he was a member. He also served on the board of directors of the Yocona Area Council of the Boy Scouts.

He served as president of the 4H Advisory Council In Prentiss County; as adult worker with the Methodist Youth Fellowship program; as an avid supporter of the Booneville High School Band; and as a member of the board of directors of the Booneville Community Center.

For over 26 years, he contributed clothing from Fred's to sick, burned out, and otherwise needy families.

Vail was very dedicated to the Baddour Center in Senatobia - a haven for mildly mentally retarded adults.

He served on its Steering Committee, contributed to its building, and provided financial support both personally and through his business.

In addition to being active in church organizations, Vail was a member of the George E. Allen Library Board: and a member and past president, as well as Paul Harris fellow, in the Booneville Rotary Club.

A former chairman of the Prentiss County March of Dimes drive, Vail also helped organize the statewide HOPE organization which lobbied for four-lane highway legislation since 1972.

Vail was named Booneville's Outstanding Citizen in 1982.

While Vail taught at Harperville Agricultural High School, he achieved what he once called his most important achievement" - marrying the former Ruth Sanders. They were married some 45 years.

ALTHEA VAN AKIN

Althea Cooper Van Akin, 91, of Booneville, died Monday, Feb. 2, 2004, at the Corinth Health and Rehab after an extended illness.

She was a retired LPN and a member of the Methodist Church in Oxford, Ga. She loved caring for and helping those in need. She was the widow of Lewis Averette Van Akin.

Services were Friday, Feb. 6, at 3 p.m. at McMillan Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. Edward Stacy and Bro. Warren Jones officiating. Burial was in Oakdale Cemetery in DeLand, Fla.

She is survived by three daughters, Barbara Estep of Oxford, Ga., Frances Rowell of North Myrtle Beach, Fla., and Martha Rogers of Burnsville; one son, Boyd L. Hildebrand of DeBary, Fla.; one brother, Vivien Cooper of Tampa, Fla.; 12 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by one sister and five brothers.

SUSAN VAN

CORINTH - Susan Van, 52, died Sunday, July 24, 2005, at the Magnolia Regional Health Center. She was born July 7, 1953, in Memphis. She attended Corinth High School. A Navy wife, she and her husband lived in many Southern cities, mainly Pensacola, Fla. They returned to Corinth after his retirement. She loved animals and enjoyed reading.

A memorial service will be at 5 p.m. today at McPeters Inc. Funeral Directors Chapel with the Rev. Dennis Smith officiating.

Survivors include her husband of 26 years, Michael Van of Corinth; her mother, Betty Doyle of Corinth; a son, Mitchell Van and wife, Amber; two daughters, Shelley Davis-Smith and friend, Jill Vicknair, of Destrehan, La., and Heather Gilliland and husband, Jeremy, of Mantachie; a brother, Ross Doyle of Memphis; three grandchildren, Mersaydees Smith of Destrehan, La., and Dustie Brugh and Aubri Gilliland, both of Mantachie; three great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends after the memorial service.

EARNESTEEN VANDERFORD

RIENZI - Earnesteen Vanderford, 87, died Friday, Feb. 21, 2003, at her residence. She was a homemaker and a member of the Tobes Chapel Pentecostal Church. She was a retired garment manufacturing employee.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Tobes Chapel Pentecostal Church with the Rev. James Burcham, the Rev. Billy Hutson and the Rev. Jimmy Vanderford officiating. Burial will be in the Williams Cemetery. Coleman Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Survivors include her husband, Vernol Vanderford; three sons, Travis Vanderford and his wife, Jeanette, Louis Earl Vanderford and his wife, Doris, and Bobby Joe Vanderford and his wife, Carron, all of Rienzi; two daughters, Nella Vee Brown and her husband, Mark, of Rienzi, and Lavada Rorie and her husband, Charles, of Corinth; her sister-in-law, Atha Sellers of Corinth; 13 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Middleton and Ethel Wallace Burcham; a son, James Vanderford; a granddaughter, Lori Vanderford; two brothers, Roy Lee and Clyde Burcham; two sisters, Irene Evetts and Clara Burcham.

Her grandsons will serve as pallbearers.

Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home. The body will be placed in the church one hour prior to services.

ESTHER VANDERFORD

CORINTH - Esther Vanderford, 87, died Wednesday, Sept. 15, 2004, at the Magnolia Regional Health Center. She was born May 15, 1917, in Alcorn County to H.A. and Nealie Duncan Burcham. She was a homemaker, an accomplished seamstress and a Baptist. She enjoyed plants and flowers, and working in her garden.

Services will be at 2 p.m. today at McPeters Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow in Juliette Cemetery.

Survivors include her husband, Cleston Vanderford; a son, Charles Vanderford and wife, Daisy, of Corinth; a brother, Milton Burcham of Puckett; four sisters, Maybelle Feazelle of Michie, Tenn., Annis Ruth Bridges of Corinth, Mildred Lambert of Burnsville and Frances Montgomery of Walnut; two grandchildren, Sheri Bryant and husband, Jeff, of Corinth, and David Vanderford and wife, Mary Ann, of Counce, Tenn.; five stepgrandchildren, Heather, Bridgette and Clay Bryant, and Anecia Hurley and Christine Milligan; one great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by a grandchild, Maurice Vanderford; two brothers, Hugh "Buddy" Burcham and Howard Burcham; and a sister, Velma Rorie.

JAMES VANDERFORD

CORINTH - James Earl Vanderford, 71, died Friday, Feb. 25, 2005, at his home. He served in the U.S. Army from 1952-1956. He was a member of the Corinth Hillandale Country Club. He enjoyed playing golf with his friends, hunting and fishing.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at McPeters Inc. Funeral Directors Chapel with Bro. Terry Harmon officiating. Burial will be in the Corinth National Cemetery.

JAMES VANDERFORD

CORINTH - James Tolbert Vanderford, 86, died Thursday, Jan. 23, 2003, at the Alcorn Care Inn. He was born Jan. 2, 1917, to the late Albert and Dollie Vanderford. He was a farmer and a Methodist. He enjoyed reading and watching westerns on television.

Services will be at 11 a.m. today at McPeters Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Charles Lambert officiating. Burial will be in Box Chapel Cemetery.

Survivors include a daughter, Sandra Lambert and her husband, Ray, of Corinth; a daughter-in-law, Maxine Vanderford of Corinth; a grandson, Donnie Vanderford; two granddaughters, Rhonda Burcham and Donna Branch; a great-grandson, Brady Burcham; two great-granddaughters, Madison Burcham and Maddie Grace Branch; several nieces and nephews.

He was receded in death by his parents; a son, James Vanderford; a great-grandson, Machael Burcham Jr.; the mother of his children, Gracie Vanderford; and seven brothers and three sisters.

IDABEL VANDEVANDER

BOONEVILLE - Idabel Quillen Vandevander, 79, died Wednesday, June 22, 2005, at her home after a long illness. She was born April 4, 1926, in Alabama. She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Belmont. She owned and operated Campus Country Restaurant for 20 years. She and her husband, Red, owned Campus Drive-In and Jack Spratt and Hickory House. She most recently sold insurance for Mutual of Omaha and AFLAC. She was a devoted mother and grandmother, a loving sister and aunt, and a friend to many.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Deaton Funeral Home Chapel in Belmont with Bro. Milton Koon and Bro. Billy Burge officiating. Burial will be in Joel Cemetery.

Survivors include a son, Larry Vandevander of Booneville; a daughter, Cami Storey of Booneville; two sisters, Mildred Outlaw and Elaine Brackeen, both of Dennis; a brother, Harold Quillen and wife, Imogene, of Dennis; three granddaughters, Jennipher Lewis and husband, Danny, of Fulton, and Jessica Yates and husband, Scottie, and Sara Storey, all of Booneville; a grandson, Tyler Storey of Booneville; two great-granddaughters, Rhiannon Yates and JoLeigh Lewis.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Vernon "Red" Vandevander; a son, Dwain Vandevander; a brother, James "Buddy" Quillen; and her parents, the Rev. James Earnest and Anna May Quillen.

WILLIE PEARL VANDEVANDER

BOONEVILLE - Willie Pearl Vandevander, 87, died Thursday, April 28, 2005, at her home. She was a retired cook, having worked at several restaurants and the Booneville School lunchroom. She was a member of the Oak Hill Baptist Church and loved gardening, flowers and spending time with her family.

Services will be at 3:30 p.m. Sunday at the McMillan Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. Mark Cagle officiating. Burial will be in the Lebanon Cemetery.

Survivors include her daughter, Ruth Lindsey and husband, Joe, of Booneville; her grandson, Clay Lindsey and wife, Jamie, of Booneville; her great-granddaughter, Jadyn Lindsey; several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, J. C. Vandevander; her parents, Dock and Willie Warren Bishop; a daughter, Virginia Vandevander; four brothers, Eloise, Clyde, B.R. and Clovis Bishop.

Pallbearers will be Larry Lindsey, Bud Lindsey, Richey Vandevander, Garvin Davis, John Berryhill, J.W. Bridges, Ricky Floyd and Ronny Rowland.

CLOVIS "TODY" VANDIVER

Clovis "Tody" Vandiver, 69, died Saturday, Aug. 24, 2002, at the North Mississippi Medical Center. He was a life long member and a deacon of Bethel Missionary Baptist Church, where he was a Sunday School teacher and song leader for many years. He was a U. S. Army veteran of the Korean Conflict. He was a former school teacher and was a graduate of Mississippi State University. He was employed by Corinth Machinery Company for many years and later started Pioneer Machinery, of which he was the owner and operator.

Services were at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Cutshall Funeral Home Chapel in Iuka with Bro. Horace McCombs and Bro. Webster Wade officiating. Burial was in the New Prospect Cemetery.

Survivors include his wife Lola Vandiver of Iuka; one son Alan Vandiver and his wife Becky, of Iuka; one daughter Beth Smith and her husband Jessie, of Iuka; one brother Mackie Vandiver of Iuka; three grandchildren, Tyler Vandiver Ethan Vandiver and Erin Hind man.

Pallbearers were James Pounders, Tyler Vandiver, Dale Vandiver, Robert Deaton, Jeff Bobo and Dexter Winchester.

DALE VANDIVER

IUKA - Dale Vandiver, 51, died Saturday, Dec. 25, 2004, at his residence. He was a member of the First Freewill Baptist Church and was self-employed as the owner of All Weatherization. He was a 32nd Degree Mason and a member of the Burnsville Lodge No. 233 F&AM. He enjoyed hunting and outdoor activities, especially farming and loved spending time with his family and friends.

Services will be at 1 p.m. today at the Cutshall Funeral Home Chapel in Iuka with Bro. Frank Wilson and Bro. Scott Webber officiating. Burial will be in the Mt. Gilead Cemetery.

Survivors include his wife, Barbara Vandiver of Iuka; one son, Josh Vandiver of Iuka; one daughter, Debbie Hyde and husband, Scott, of Iuka; three brothers, Lucian Vandiver of The Woodlands, Texas, Jimmy Ray Vandiver of Humble, Texas and Garman Vandiver of Iuka; one sister, Shirley Williams of Iuka; four grandchildren, Makayla, Blake, Barry and Hunter, all of Iuka.

EARLINE C. VANDIVER

Earline Crider Vandiver, 83, died Sunday, June 8, 2003, at Beverly Health Care-Briar Ridge where she had resided for seven years. She was born Nov. 5, 1919, in Lee County to the late Monroe and Nancy Burks Vandiver. She and her late husband, Devure, lived most of their life in Lee County except for 15 years in Anaheim, Calif., returning to the Baldwyn area in 1980. She was a homemaker, a talented seamstress and enjoyed gardening and preparing food for her family and friends. She as a charger member of the Wesley United Methodist Church in Tupelo where she was active with youth programs and was a Girl Scout leader.

Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. today at Glenwood Cemetery in Tupelo with Bro. Tim Lampley and Bro. Tom Wilson officiating. Lee Memorial Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Survivors include two sons, Buddy Vandiver and his wife, Pat, of the Richmond community and Tom Vandiver and his wife, Bobbie, of Pensacola, Fla.; a special granddaughter, Anna Pinney Miller and her husband, Kyle, of Baldwyn; a sister, Faye Crider of Baldwyn; a brother, Ed Crider and his wife, Billie, of Tupelo; her grandchildren, Debby Misiak of Placentia, Calif., Kathy McGee and her husband, Marc Vandiver, of the Richmond community, Janie Vandiver Baylis and her husband, Robert, of Ocean Springs, Mandy Vandiver Hall and her husband, Danny, of Oxford; 10 great-grandchildren, Ben and Meg Baylis, Anna Porter Hall, Molly and Katie Vandiver, Caitlin Megan and Shannon McGee and Samantha and Danielle Misiak.

EUGENIA SARAH VANDIVER

August 4, 1910 "OBITUARIES'

While the 'gates stood ajar', on June 13, 1910, in the holy hush of an early hour, the beautiful spirit of Miss Eugenia Vandiver crossed eternity's boundless sea and passed into the 'city of gold', methinks, amid shouts of welcome and anthems of praise by the hosts of redeemed who have gone on before, and the gladsome plaudit, 'well done', of the Savior whom she loved and so faithfully served. Miss Eugenia was born April 19, 1875. But since early girlhood has lived in Baldwyn, where the writer has known much of the home life of this lovely girl and seldom have we found in the heart of woman such love, such unselfishness, and withal, such Christian fortitude as adorned the life of this 'child of a King'. Being a victim to bodily ills almost her entire life, she was naturally indulged by a tender, loving mother until that mother was called home just two years gone; by an indulgent and fond father, by three noble brothers who know how to love and serve as but few know, and by a sweet-spirited sister and two sisters-in-law who are equal to any stress laid upon noble womanhood; but 'none of these things moved her' to neglect what she believed to be her duty to others. Among her last words were: 'I should like to live longer so that I might serve better those whom I love, but if I cannot it will be all right. At home, among friends and in the church-Methodist-of which she was a faithful member, she was a light that could not be hid, but shall shine brighter and brighter along the pathway of those who shall follow on. Little wonder then that skilled physicians, loved ones and friends should have been untiring in their efforts to keep with us this brave Christian girl, for we felt we so much needed her; but the Master said, 'I have need of thee', and we bow in humble submission to his will for 'He doeth all things well.' Bereaved ones, look up and be comforted for,

'Not now, but in the coming years,

It may be in the better land,

We'll know the meaning of our tears,

And then someday we'll understand.'

[Note: Eugenia Sarah Vandiver was born on April 19, 1875 in Georgia, daughter of George Albert Callaway Vandiver and Julia Ann Ledbetter. The family moved to Baldwyn, Mississippi when Eugenia was young, and she lived the rest of her life there. Her health was poor most of her life, and she died at the age of thirty-five on June 13, 1910. She was buried in the Masonic Cemetery in Baldwyn, Lee County, Mississippi.]

Baldwyn - Mrs. Hallie Nelson Vandiver, 91, died at Baldwyn Medical Unit at 1 p.m. Sunday after an extended illness.

She was the widow of Dr. J. C. Vandiver, who died in 1931 and was a member of Baldwyn Baptist Church.

Services were held at 3 p.m. Monday at Waters Funeral Home chapel with burial in the Baldwyn Masonic Cemetery. Services were conducted by Brother Leo Barker.

Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Roland Hahnstadt of Decatur, Ill., a son, Nelson Vandiver of Baldwyn; a sister, Mrs. J. H. Milton of Baldwyn; five grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.

DR. JAMES C. VANDIVER

Prominent Doctor Called by Death

Dr. James C. Vandiver, aged about 48, died at his home in Baldwyn Tuesday morning, following a long and painful illness. He had undergone a severe operation several weeks ago but kept growing worse until death came.

Dr. Vandiver was well known throughout this section as an outstanding practitioner; he had lived at Wheeler for many years and them moved to Baldwyn, where he had a larger field. No man will be more greatly missed by the clientele he served than Dr. Vandiver. He was always ready to minister to the suffering. He was a great friend to the things that go to make a better country and a higher class of citizenship. He took a leading part in the formation of the Wheeler High School and supported it in every way.

The funeral was held Wednesday afternoon from the Baptist Church at Baldwyn and was one of the most largely attended ever held in Baldwyn. This great crowd felt a distinct personal bereavement in the passing of their friend and family Physician. The services were conducted by Dr. George M. Savage, of Jackson, Tenn., who was assisted by Bro. J.V. Bennett of Baldwyn. At the conclusion of the services the body was laid to rest in the Masonic Cemetery at Baldwyn. The Doctors and Surgeons of Baldwyn, Booneville and Tupelo were pallbearers both active and honary.

He is survived by his wife Mrs. Hallie Nelson Vandiver, one son Nelson and a daughter Alberta, his father G.A.C. Vandiver of Moorehead and a sister Mrs. Raymond Strange of Texas.

OBITUARIES FOR J. SLOAN VANDIVER

"J. Sloan Vandiver Dies in Vicksburg; Burial Here Today"

Baldwyn, Mississippi, Thursday, March 2, 1950

Graveside services will be held Thursday, March 2, at the Masonic cemetery at 4 o'clock for J. Sloan Vandiver who died at the Lutheran Hospital in Vicksburg late Tuesday night.

The body will arrive in Baldwyn about noon and be in state at Waters Funeral Home.

Services were held at Port Gibson Wednesday. Mr. Vandiver was about 70 years old. He was an active Presbyterian.

He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. G. A. C. Vandiver who moved to Baldwyn from Georgia when J. Sloan was a small boy.

Mr. Vandiver visited in Baldwyn in August 1949 enroute to Washington and New York. It was shortly after this that he underwent two operations from which he never fully recovered.

He was president of Chamberlain Hunt Academy at the time of his death. Prior to that he was state superintendent of education.

He began his successful career at a one-teacher school known as Asbury, located north of Baldwyn. He was a key figure in many schools around here and at Ackerman.

He was a gifted storyteller and a vein of humor always interspersed his stories.

Next he was president of Sunflower Junior College at Moorhead and while there he became known for his untiring efforts to help the students of little financial means. Countless men and women in North Mississippi owe their education to Mr. Vandiver, who found a way for them to go to school if they desired.

He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Blanche Vandiver; a son, J. S. "Dr. Vandiver, Noted Educator Died Tuesday Evening2

Dr. Joseph Sloan Vandiver, president of Chamberlain-Hunt Academy since July 1945, and noted educator in the South, died in a Vicksburg hospital about 7:30 Tuesday night. He had been in ill health for several months, his death was unexpected and a shock to a host of friends. He was 71 years of age.

His funeral service was held at Port Gibson Presbyterian Church Wednesday afternoon at four o'clock with Dr. R. A. Bolling, Cleveland; Rev. A. N. Moffett, and Dr. R. Girard Lowe, of Jackson officiating. Cadets from the academy served as active pallbearers, and members of the board of trustees, faculty members and representatives from the State Dpartment of Education, were honorary pallbearers. An honor guard of cadets was at the church, and as the body lay in state at Guion Funeral Home. The cadets sang two hymns at the funeral.

The ministers, Dr. Vandiver's former pastors, and two are now members of the board of trustees, paid tribute to his memory as an educator, a church worker, and trainer of youth in Christian living.

The body lay in state at Guion Funeral Home last night and was carried to Baldwin,[sic] Miss., today for interment at four o'clock this afternoon. Dr. E. G. Boyce will officiate at the cemetery.

A long and useful career in educating young men and women of Mississippi and surrounding states was brought to a close in Dr. Vandiver's death. Born in Prentiss County, Miss. [My note: He was born in Franklin County, Georgia], he began his teaching career at the age of 18 years. After teaching in several counties, he served as superintendent of Sunflower high school and president of Sunflower Junior College at Moorhead for 17 years.

Dr. Vandiver was elected State Superintendent of Education in 1935, and was reelected the two following terms, but resigned in 1945, in the middle of his third term to become president of Chamberlain-Hunt Academy.

Under his leadership the local academy increased in enrollment from about 50 to 150 cadets; several new departments were added; a new dormitory erected, and an expansion program planning for facilities to care for 200 cadets, has been started.

For his outstanding work, both here and in other parts of Mississippi, Southwestern at Memphis, conferred upon him the degree of Doctor of Education in June 1947.

Dr. Vandiver received his education at Mississippi College, Mississippi A. & M. College, and the University of Chicago, and did graduate work at the University of Alabama.

He was active in church and civic affairs, being an elder in the Port Gibson Presbyterian Church and teacher of the men's Bible Class, until his physician advised him to discontinue that work; and was a member of the Lion's Club.

Dr. Vandiver leaves his wife, the former Miss Blanche Feemster of Nettleton; a daughter, Miss Margaret Vandiver of Greenwood; a son, Dr. J. S. Vandiver, Jr., a member of the faculty of Oklahoma A. & M. College, at Stillwater; and a sister, Mrs. Leona Strange of Gainsville, Texas."

IUKA - Lucille Vandiver, 85, died Monday, Aug. 16, 2004, at the North Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo. She was a homemaker and a member of Bethel Missionary Baptist Church. She was self-employed as an Avon Products representative for 37 years. She enjoyed cooking and sewing.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Cutshall Funeral Home Chapel in Iuka with Bro. David Greg and Bro. Scott Webber officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Gilead Cemetery.

Lori Ellon Vanderford, one-year daughter of Mr. and Mrs. L. Vanderford of Route 2, Rienzi, died Saturday at 3:30 p.m. in the Community Hospital following an extended illness.

Milton W. Vanderford, 80, of Burnsville, died Tuesday. June 4. 2002. at the North Mississippi Medical Center.

Booneville – Idabel Quillen Vandevander, 79, died Wednesday, June 22, 2005, at her home after a long illness. She was born April 4, 1926, in Alabama. She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Belmont. She owned and operated Campus Country Restaurant for 20 years. She and her husband, Red, owned Campus Drive-In and Jack Spratt and Hickory House. She most recently sold insurance for Mutual of Omaha and AFLAC. She was a devoted mother and grandmother, a loving sister and aunt, and a friend to many.

Prominent Doctor Called by Death

The funeral was held Wednesday afternoon from the Baptist Church at Baldwyn and was one of the most largely attended ever held in Baldwyn. This great crowd felt a distinct personal bereavement in the passing of their friend and family Physician. The services were conducted by Dr. George M. Savage, of Jackson, Tenn., who was assisted by Bro. J. V. Bennett of Baldwyn. At the conclusion of the services the body was laid to rest in the Masonic Cemetery at Baldwyn. The Doctors and Surgeons of Baldwyn, Booneville and Tupelo were pallbearers both active and honorary.

He is survived by his wife Mrs. Hallie Nelson Vandiver, one son Nelson and a daughter Alberta, his father G. A. C. Vandiver of Moorehead and a sister Mrs. Raymond Strange of Texas.

CORINTH - Louise A. Vann, 86, died Thursday, June 26, 2003, at the Magnolia Regional Health Center in Corinth after a brief illness. She was born Feb. 11, 1917, in Iuka. She moved with her family to Corinth in 1930 and lived there most of her life. She graduated from Corinth High School and the University of Mississippi. She was an active member of various clubs, including the Fin-de Siecle Club and Daughters of the American Revolution. She was a charter member of the Junior Service League. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church and served with the Women of the Church for several years.

BALDWYN ‑ Quane McCarthy Vandiver died Tuesday, Feb. 29, 2000, at the North Mississippi Medical Center after along illness. She was born Jan. 22, 1917, in the Alpine community of Lee County to Florrie Snell McCarthy and Edward Payne McCarthy. She married James Nelson Vandiver in 1939; he died in 1985. She was a graduate of Blue Mountain College and the University of Mississippi She taught school in Lee County schools, Baldwyn Public Schools and Northeast Mississippi Community College far 31 years. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Baldwyn.

Booneville – Keith Vaughn, 50, passed away Sunday, Aug. 9, 2015, at Baptist Memorial Hospital in Booneville. He was born Dec. 11, 1964, to Harold and Eva Livingston Vaughn. He was a member of Oak Ridge Church of Christ. He was a successful entrepreneur who enjoyed working, playing Rook and being with family and friends.

He is survived by his wife Karon Coats Vaughn; one daughter, Courtney (Cody) McGee of Corinth; one son, Graham (Meghan) of Booneville; his mother, Eva Vaughn; two sisters, Reta Vaughn and Freda Vaughn; one brother, Gary Vaughn; and three grandchildren, Ryan McGee, Parker Vaughn and Saylor Kate Vaughn.

He was preceded in death by his father; and one sister, Mickey Vaughn.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Charnel and Clistie Viola Blackburn; a sister, Elatrice Pounders; and her stepmother, Eva Blackburn.

IUKA - Geneva Pauline Vasquez, 73, died Monday, June 23, 2003, at the Tishomingo Community Living Center. She was a member of Southwood Baptist Church and a former member of Asphalt Rock Baptist Church. She was a homemaker and the widow of Andre Vasquez. She was a beloved mother and a friend to all who knew her.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Asphalt Rock Baptist Church with Bro. Perry Murphy officiating. Burial will be in Smith Cemetery in Cherokee, Ala. Cutshall Funeral Home of Iuka is in charge of the arrangements.

Survivors include two sons, David Vasquez and wife, Jennifer, of Florence, Ala., and Johnny Murphy of Cherokee, Ala.; two daughters, Barbara Wilson and husband, Dennis, of Cherokee, Ala., and Deborah Durham and husband, Tommy, of Dennis; 14 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren.

IUKA - Sharon Vasquez, 60, died Friday, March 7, 2003, at the University of Alabama Medical Center in Birmingham. She was known for helping anyone in need. She especially enjoyed the holidays and getting ready for Christmas.

Services will be at 3 p.m. Tuesday at the Cutshall Funeral Home Chapel in Iuka with Bro. Aaron Bonds officiating. Burial will be in the Oak Grove Cemetery.

CORINTH - Eugene Morris Veach, 81, died Wednesday, Sept. 21, 2005, at the Magnolia Regional Health Center. He was born March 8, 1924, in Haywood County, Tenn., to Charlie and Bertha Rogers Veach. He was a farmer and a member of the Pentecostal faith. He was a veteran of World War II and a member of the VFW.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at the Corinthian Chapel in Walnut with the Rev. Travis Wilbanks officiating. Burial will be in Ebernezer Cemetery in Middleton, Tenn.

Mrs. Brown's Father Buried In Connecticut

Services for Mr. Camillo Venezia, father of Mrs. James T. Brown, were held February 15th at RohmLuchansky Funeral Home in Stratford, Connecticut.

Mr. Venezia died of a heart attack on February 13th at his home. He was 69 years old.

He is survived by his wife, 4 daughters, Mrs. Lillian Smith, Mrs. Mildred Baranowsky, both of Millford, Conn., Mrs. Grace Barker of Stratford, Conn., and Mrs. Brown of Booneville, and 3 sons, John Venezia and Peter Venezia of the home and Tommy Venezia of Stratford, Conn.

Mr. and Mrs. Brown, Kenneth, Patrice and Neva Jo spent 8 days in Connecticut following Mr. Venezia's death.

IUKA - Alta Faye Parsons Vescio, 67, died Monday, Feb. 7, 2005, at her home.

Survivors include a son, Anthony Vescio of Iuka; a daughter, Brenda Carr of Iuka; a brother, Rufus Arlon Parsons of Iuka; three sisters, Ilene Smith, Louise White and Majell George, all of Iuka; three grandchildren, Paul Carr of Chicago, and Christopher Vescio and Lisa Marie Vescio, both of Heflin, Ala.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph Vescio; her parents, Wesley and Sally Parsons; three sisters, Letha Wilson, Sadie Gentry and Joyce Hale; and five brothers, D.L., Troy, James Roy, Marvin and Odis Parsons.

BALDWYN - Frances E. Vess, 60, died Tuesday, June 3, 2003, at her home in Baldwyn after a long illness. She was a native of Pontotoc County and a longtime resident of Baldwyn. She was a homemaker and a retired employee of Wal-Mart. She attended the Lighthouse Assembly of God.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday in the Jefferson Street Chapel of W. E. Pegues with the Rev. Roy Loftin officiating. Burial will be in the Beech Springs Cemetery.

Survivors include her husband of 41 years, Joe Vess of Baldwyn; her mother, Earlene Watts of Baldwyn; two sisters, Nell Dunaway of Guntown and Rita Horton of Saltillo; a brother, Richard Watts of Baldwyn.

She was preceded in death by her father, Buddy Watts, and a brother, E. J. Watts.

BELMONT - Leslie A. Vinson, 84, died Sunday, Jan. 18, 2004, at the Southern Magnolia Estates in Iuka. He was a native of Mississippi. He was a retired veteran of the U.S. Army and U.S. Air Force. He served in both World War II and the Korean War. He was a farmer and a Baptist.

Services will be at 11 a.m. today at Deaton Funeral Home Chapel in Belmont with Bro. Dewayne Wells and Bro. Billy Credille officiating. Burial will be in Belmont Memory Garden.

Survivors include a brother, Flavis Vinson of Illinois; many cousins, nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Ambrose and Arrie Nunley Vinson; a sister, Una Beggs; three brothers, Elton Vinson, Ellis Vinson and James Vinson; and a special friend, Katherine Bates.

GOLDEN - Paskal "Pat" Vinson, 79, died Monday, July 14, 2003, at the North Mississippi Medical Center. A lifelong resident of Itawamba County, he was born Jan. 16, 1924, to Ruben Ross Vinson and Arizona Flossie East Vinson. He farmed cotton and corn most of his life and worked as a carpenter for 20 years. He was a member of Poplar Springs Baptist Church. He enjoyed fishing, gardening and yard work.

Services will be at 11 a.m. today at the McNeece-Morris Funeral Home Chapel in Fulton with Bro. Jackie Gray officiating. Burial will be in the Mount Zion Cemetery.

Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Helen Faye Vinson of Golden; a son, William Durl Vinson and wife, Edith Faye, of Mooreville; two sisters, Lori Thorn and husband, Kenneth Odell, of Red Bay, Ala., and Maurie Kemp of Miami, Fla.; two grandchildren, Amanda Sabryati Vinson and Kimberly Xylina Vinson, both of Mooreville.

BELDING, Mich. - Alice M. Virden, 83, died Wednesday, March 12, 2003, at the Metron of Belding Nursing Home in Belding, Mich. She was born April 27, 1919, in Lansing, Mich., and worked for a number of years at Sparrow Hospital as a housekeeper. She was preceded in death by her husband, Marvin Virden, in 1994; a brother, Elden Tibbits; and a sister, Evelyn Summerfield.

Graveside services will be at 1 p.m. today at the Joel Cemetery in Dennis, Miss., with Dr. Parish Hartley officiating. Deaton Funeral Home of Belmont is in charge of the arrangements.

Mrs. Julia Virden passed away April 28th at her daughter’s Mrs., Tom Surratt, near Baldwyn, Miss.

Mother Virden was a sweet Christian woman. She told u there was nothing between her soul and her savior. She was ready and waiting for the summons to come. She bore her sufferings with patience.

She leaves three Sons, V, P. Virden of Dennis, Miss., Jim and O. C. of Detroit, Mich., and three daughters, Mrs. B. F. Gahagan of Marietta Miss., Mrs. J H.
