Stephen Starks

Stephen Starks' great-granddaughter 

Stephen Starks was born in 1823 in Lynchburg.  On September 1, 1862, he enlisted as a Private, New Company E, 3rd Regiment, Mississippi Infantry,

Enterprise, MS.  On 9/20/1863, he reenlisted at Newton Station, MS.  He was promoted to Corporal 8/24/65 and took the Oath of Amnesty at the end of the War.  Stephen reportedly planted the beautiful Oak trees that line Washington Avenue-the main thoroughfare-in Ocean Springs on Easter Sunday in 1882.  He was a shopkeeper (grocer) and a farmer.  He married Ellen Elwyrt (Elwart?) on December 23, 1856.  They had three children:  John Joseph, Samuel Patrick Cyril, Birth: 18 Mar 1859 in Ocean Springs, MS Death: 16 Mar 1919 in Ocean Springs, MS; and Margaret Ellen (Mamie), b.13 OCT 1862 in Ocean Springs, MS and died in her teens of yellow fever.  Stephen, Ellen, Margaret, Samuel Patrick Cyril and his wife, Isabelle Alice Latimer, and Samuel and Belle's children, Edwin George and Theresa Ann, are all buried in the Bellande Cemetery in Ocean Springs under a headstone that simply says STARKS.
