William and Joshua Cates  were listed very early in Jackson County, MS. William was born 1770's and died about 1840, his wife is unknown; he had 5 sons and 3 daughters.

Joshua Cates, born 1773, died after 1850
William G. Cates, born 1821 died 1850/51 (he drowned);  married Elisabeth Cilburn, born 1824, daughter of Harriet Cole and James Cilburn, died 1900 on Dauphin Island, AL. After death of William Cates, his widow Elisabeth Cilburn remarried in 1852 to Henry Williams.
Children of William and Elisabeth Cates:
Elisabeth Leanna Cates, b. 1844, d.1885, married John Collier, 1820-1905, lived on Dauphin Is.
Harriet A. Cates, 1847-1895, married Jacob Cook; lived in Scranton, MS and later Biloxi, MS
Caroline Adele Cates, 1850-1933, married Daniel S. Zirlott; lived at Fowl River/Herron Bay, AL
