Issaquena Genealogy and History Project: 1863 Deer Creek - Steele's Bayou Plantations Map

Names of Plantations on Map

Widow Watson No entries were found in the census records, however, see the Watson Plantation entry below.
Dr. Chaney Dr. William I. Chaney is found on the 1860 Issaquena County Federal Census (page 12, family 115).
Dr. Butts No entries were found in the census records
Woodford Nothing has been found pertaining to this name
Butler J.E. Butler is found on the 1860 Issaquena County Federal Census (page 13, family 122).
Dr. Moore Frank W. Moore is found on the 1860 Issaquena County Federal Census (page 4, family 28). There is also a Rachel Moore, listed as a planter (next door to Frank W. Moore), who is probably the mother of Frank W. Moore.
W. Messenger There is a G.W.B. Messinger listed on the 1860 Issaquena County Federal Census (page 13, family 121).
L. Williams There is an L. Williams living next to W. Messinger and J.E. Butler on the 1860 Issaquena County Federal Census (page 13, family 125)
Harvey There is an E.J. Harvey listed on the 1860 Issaquena County Federal Census (page 12, family 118).
J. Williams There is a J.A. Williams (overseer) listed on the 1860 Issaquena County Federal Census (page 10, family 07). There is also a J.L. Williams (planter) listed on the same census, who is more than likely the J. Williams (page 13, family 127) listed on the map, as he is in the same neighborhood as others shown on the census.
Gibbons There is a William Gibbons listed on the 1860 Issaquena County Federal Census (page 13, family 128)
Clark There is a J.M. Clark listed on the 1860 Issaquena County Federal Census (page 13, family 129), next door to William Gibbons.
Wright Next door to J.M. Clark on the 1860 Issaquena County Federal Census is J.C. Wright (page 14, family 130)
Chaney This is more than likely B.Y. Chaney, as he is listed next door to J.C. Wright on the 1860 Issaquena County Federal Census (page 14, family 131)
Shelby Next door to B.Y. Chaney on the 1860 Issaquena County Federal Census is E.W. Shelby (page 14, family 132)
Hunt David Hunt is listed on the 1860 Issaquena County Slave Schedules on pages 34 and 35. By being listed on the slave schedules, and not on the regular census, he must have been a non-resident plantation owner. There is also a G.F. Hunt listed on pages 75, 76 and 77 of the 1860 slave schedules. More than likely, G.F. Hunt is the Hunt referred to on the map, as his slaves are listed in the same neighborhood as others on the map. Neither Hunt men are listed on the free schedules.
Hunt's Plantation See notation above
Watson's Plantation L.C. Watson is listed on the 1860 Issaquena County Federal Census (page 14, family 143).
Ch. Fore's Plantation C.J. Fore is listed on the 1860 Issaquena County Federal Census (page 14, family 141) two residences away from L.C. Watson.
Hill's Plantation J.C. Hill is listed on the 1860 Issaquena County Federal Census (page 6, family 55). However, there is a J.D. Hill listed on numerous pages of the 1860 Issaquena County Slave Schedules, owning many slaves and several plantations (starting on page 78). Apparently he was a non-resident planter. More than likely the plantation listed on the map is one of his plantations, as the overseers on two of those plantations are listed in the 1860 Issaquena County Federal Census in the same neighborhood as others shown on the map.
