Bankston was located four miles northwest of Chester, it was founded in 1847,
and named after an
early settler by the name of Banks. A cotton and woolen goods textile mill was
established here by Colonel James M. Wesson in 1848. The mill town of Bankston
grew quickly to include a flour and gristmill,
shoe factory, tannery, a machine shop and other businessess. By 1860 The Bankston Mill was one of the largest of four cotton mills in the state. The Bankston mill continued to flourish until 1864 when it was burned by the Union Calvary under the charge of General Benjamin H. Grierson. |
