HE CLUBBED HIS WIFE
But She Grabbed Up a Meat Knife and Jabbed Him in the Neck.
PORT GIBSON, (Miss.), March 5 - Dottie DIBSON killed her husband, Dave near
Rocky Springs, this county, last night. The pair had been separated since
Christmas and Dave tried to effect a reconciliation. Failing in this, he
attacked her with a club, when she grabbed a meat knife and plunged it into
his neck, killing him. She is in jail.

Died in the state of Mississippi, about the first, James McAllister, A. M., aged 55 years, late principal of Jefferson College, near Natchez.  Mr. McAllister was a native of Sterling, in Scotland, and attended the Universities of Glasgow and Edinburgh.  He emigrated to America where he resided for some time in the cities of Norfolk and Richmond, Virginia - and from thence was occupied for several years as chief agent in the treasury of the Union.  Having left Washington City, he emigrated to Kentucky and was principal in the Salem Academy.  He has left a wife and two children.

Married at Monmouth Place, near Natchez, on Thursday, the 15th, by John Baynton, Esqr., Mr. Thomas Nixon, of the House of Knox and Nixon, to Miss Margaret E. C. Hankinson, eldest daughter of John Hankinson, Esq.


Died at Warrenton, on the 19th, in the 35th year of his age, of hemorrhage from the stomach, Horace G. Wallace, Esquire, a native of New Hampshire.  He emigrated to this place in 1817, where he commenced the practice of law.


Died on Thursday morning, the 15th, at the Forest (Natchez), the family seat, Mrs. D. Dunbar, relict of the late Wm. Dunbar, Esq.  In the year 1810 death deprived her of her husband and she was left with a large family and the care of an extensive estate.

Died on the morn. Of the 27th, Horace Carpenter, at his residence in Port Gibson.  His 41st year had not quite rolled its course.  He was a native of Conn., but for the last 17 years of his life he had been a resident of Port Gibson.  His occupation professedly was merchant.

Died at his late residence, Willow Springs, Claiborne County, state of Miss., on the 6th, Rufus H. King, M. D. aged 28 years.  Dr. King was a native of the state of new York where his aged parents now reside.

Mr. John a. Rowan, well known in this city, was killed some weeks since in a recounter with Dudley Woolfolk, in Woodford County, Kentucky.  Ill treatment of his wife, who was Woolfolk's sister, is said to have been the cause of the difficulty, which resulted in his untimely death.

On Monday afternoon last, John B. Hixon was shot dead, a few miles from this place, by his father-in-law, Lewis Lot.  Hixon, it seems, had maltreated his wife, who had sought refuge at her father's house.  Mr. L. immediately came to town, delivered himself up to the officers of justice, and was tried before his Honor Judge Burrus, on Wednesday, and acquitted.

An altercation took place on Tuesday evening between Daniel Kellen and Thomas Hoey, and both being excited from liquor, blows were interchanged; Killen took up a wooden picket and struck Hoey on the head, knocking him senseless.  He died yesterday morning.

It is reported in town that col. W. b. Minor shot and killed Col. Wilkinson, living on Paw Paw Island, and wounded his son, Edward Wilkinson, so severly that he is not expected to recover.


We learned from the Holly springs Guard that Bartley A. Cox was killed on the 19th ult., by the accidental discharge of a gun in his own hands.

It is our painful duty to record the sudden death of Dr. Westcott, of Jackson, Miss.  He died in this place on the 23d ult., of hemorrhage of the lungs.


November 21, 1846
It becomes our painful duty to chronical a bloodthirsty tragedy.  The parties concerned were John Catlin, the deceased, Abel Kelly, Abram Kelly, Jesse H. Martin and Wm. Clawson.  On Friday the two Kellys, Martin, Clawson and another young man, rode up to the brickyard where Catlin was making a kiln of bricks, and while he was engaged in giving some directions to the hands, Martin fired on him.  The shot struck Catlin in the neck severing an artery.  Catlin then caught up a rifle and shot Martin striking him on the left cheek.  The others then fled, but returned and Abel Kelly shot Catlin several times after he had fallen from weakness due to loss of blood.  Clawson has been arrested, Martin died on yesterday morning, the kellys have not been apprehended, the elder Mrs. Kelly is now under arrest for aiding and abetting the murderers.

It becomes our painful duty to announce the death of Israel Loring, Esq., the patriarch of our town, who departed this life on Sunday, the 18th, in the 75th year of his age.  The deceased was a native of Sunbury, Mass., from whence he removed in the year 1789, to Marietta, Ohio, then a frontier post in the wilderness, where for some time he acted as Commissary in the Army under the command of Gen. Wayne.  In the year 1803 he removed to this county, then just formed, and erected the first frame dwelling in this town.  His remains were accompanied to the tomb by the Masonic Fraternity, of which he was an honored member.

Died in this city, Saturday night, the 10th, Doctor James A. Maxwell, a native of Mississippi, and for the last three years a resident of this city, in the 33d year of his age.  Doctor Maxwell was a graduate of Louisville Medical College.  His remains were taken to his native state for interment.  (New Orleans Tropic)

Spencer, Esq., Mr. Samuel Marshall, in the 79th year of his age.  He was a native of Pennsylvania and when only 13 years old he emigrated to Natchez, during Spanish times, and has resided in Mississippi 60 years.  During the latter years of his life he has been stricken with blindness, and afflicted with great dullness of hearing.

The paper published but recently, the obituary of Thomas Freeland, the second son of Thomas Freeland, Esq., of this county, since which time death has removed two lovely children from the bosom of his family.  His youngest son, Augustine, and Eugenia Bell, an adopted daughter, were the subjects of a fatal disease.

Died in Hinds County, Miss., Mrs. Frances H. Lamon, in the 24th year of her age.  She was the daughter of the late Ezra Marble, of this co.


Our venerable fellow citizen, Dr. Samuel Dorsey, was eighty-one years old on the 3d of March, and in three days afterwards his spirit returned to God.  He was a native of Maryland.

Died at her residence in this county, on the 21st ult., Mrs. Gradick aged 82 years.  This most aged resident of our county was a native of South Carolina and had been in this place nearly 40 years.  She has left three daughters.  


Died on Monday morning last, in this village, Harriet Lavinia, wife of John K. Marble, in the 17th year of her age.

Died at Rocky Springs, on the 13th, Mrs. Louisa Fisher, wife of Geo. W. Fisher, and daughter of Mr. Wm. Clark, aged 23 years.

Mrs. Emily Jane Moreland is no more.  She was the dau. of Dr. John and Eliza Laybourne, a native of Claiborne Co., Miss.  Born 2 miles from Port Gibson (on the same day she died) Jan. 27th, 1809. She was married to Josiah Willis, January 7, 1828 and lived with him till July 16, 1832 when Providence deprived her of her husband and the father of her 3 children.  In August 1838 she was married to L. F. Moreland.

James Chamberlain, President and oldest professor of Oakland College, departed this life, of Typhoid fever, on the 2d of January, 1850, at residence of his brother, Washington Chamberlain, in Charleston, Va.

Died on Typhoid fever, at Charleston, Kenewa Valley, Va., on the 2d of January, 1850, Dr. James Chamberlain, for many years a citizen of Port Gibson, but recently of Thompkin's Bend, La.  Dr. Chamberlain was a native of Adams County, Pa.  He graduated at Jefferson College in western Pennsylvania, in 1826.

Died in this county, on Monday last, Mr. David McCaleb, an old and highly esteemed citizen.


Died at the residence of Timothy Shannahan, in this place, on Wednesday, the 6th, Mr. John T. Brown.

Departed this life on the 15th March last, at his late residence in this county, Mr. James Moor, at the age of 54 years.  Mr. Moor had resided in this co. 40 years, and had been a member of the Methodist Church.


Died on the 8th, William A. Hankinson, aged 19 years and 30 days.  His death was caused by the accidental firing of a pistol.

Died in New Orleans, on Saturday, the 21st, of dropsy, Col. William Bridgers, of this county.  He was born in North Carolina, February 3, 1790, and has resided in this county over 40 years.  His remains were brought to Grand Gulf, where they were interred on Wed., the 25th.
