Directions added January 2002
Calhoun County now uses a 911 system. If the county map was
divided into four equal sections, roughly the County Roads (CR) would be
located in:
Northeast -
100s Northwest - 200s
Southwest -
300s Southeast - 400s
There are multiple ways to arrive at most of these
locations. I have tried to use the safest and easiest routes, though
not always the shortest.
Most of these cemeteries are located in rural
areas with no water, no stores, no facilities.
If the cemeteries are on private property, you
need to receive permission to cross the properties.
Trespassers will not be tolerated!

- on Fred Beckett Land, Western Calhoun County From Bruce go west on State Highway 330 to CR 247. Go north
for four miles. There should be a fence on the east side of the road. After the
fence ends there is a clear-cut area. If you walk up the clear-cut and angle to
the north the two graves are located on the hillside to your right as you near
the top. Mr. Melton said that his family had told him it was a couple of
travelers passing through in a wagon and he had no further information about
them.

8 & 9 Cemetery, South of Calhoun City – sandstone rocks
only From
Calhoun City drive south five miles to the 8 & 9
Intersection. Turn south on Hwy. 9, go several hundred feet. The cemetery is
located behind the brick house (formerly the Tedder house) on the hill on the
eastside of the road. From the carport, walk a few hundred feet south and look
to the east. Over forty depressions could be counted and one piece of a ceramic
marker found. Todd McGonagill, Robert Brand, Eddie Hitt Jr. and other local
boys played here as children. Mrs. Ida Belle Pearson Walker said that her
relative Don Pearson was buried here and that it is the "Old" Friendship Cemetery.

- Old Anglin property, West of Bruce From Bruce go west on State Highway 32 and turn south on
State Highway330 toward Coffeeville. Some hunters discovered the cemetery
before timber was cut. It is almost directly across from where CR 245 connects
with Highway330, but a little angled to the northwest.
Bailey/Hastings (Maxey) Cemetery,
Oldtown From Pittsboro go north on Highway 9 to the bottom of Gore
Hill. Turn east on CR 102 and go 2.3 miles. If you turn in the driveway and go
through the gate on the left, the cemetery is about 100 yards due east where
the cedar, pine and oaks are standing.

- Pine Ridge East, East of
Pittsboro From
the courthouse at Pittsboro, go east on CR 100, behind the post office. Turn
east on CR 400. The pavement ends. Stay to the left on CR 401 when it
intersects with CR 400 continuing west. At the junction of CR 109 and CR 401
there was a large sawdust pile on the southeast
corner. A hunter found some graves there many years ago.

Additional
Notes
1. Township 13S, Range 2 West, SE corner of NE ¼
of Section 13.
2. “Two acres immediately south of
white cemetery at Old Chapel
Hill Church M. E. now used
for colored burying ground, NE corner of SE ¼ Township
23, Range 8 east, Section 14.” (Notes from Imogene Springer work)
3. Listed in
some references as Johnson Cemetery, Mr. L. B. Johnson said that Ida Clifford Ligon
Johnson was his grandmother. She is on the “Johnson”
listing. Mr. Johnson says the cemetery is called Edwards. These are the
same places.
5. “10/2/1859
W ½ NE ¼ Township 23, Range 9 East, ,Section 14 tomb and grave of
grantor's father Ellis Gore etus William Sugg “ (Imogene
Springer reference)
6. Mrs. Johnie
Murphree said that Monroe Lester had a old store down
the road, across from Sam Vanlandingham's house, and that a family cemetery had
been formed not far from the store.
7. C. A. Lewers to
state: private buring [sic] ground, Township
13Range 1 west Section 20 NW ¼ - dated 4/16/1861.
8. In some records
this is listed as Mt. Tabor/Campground Cemetery, but Mr. Bryan is implying that
the Tabernacle Methodist Church is the Campground.
9. I think this might
be Palmer. The Davis reference to the Poory
grave is Township 24 north, Range 8 east, NW corner of SW ¼ of Section24: and
the Weyerhaeuser survey is part of SW ¼, Section 24, Township24 north, Range 8
east. James Houston Palmer bought land in Section 25 at the original land
sales in June 14, 1848 but in 1861 John H. Parmer [Palmer] has land in SW
Section 24, and Sections 25 and 26.
10. Listed as
unidentified by the Davis. Frankie West and Booger Barker at Slate
Springs call it the Putman graves.
11. Imogene
Springer has provided references to tax information dating to 7/24/1888when I.
S. Burns deeds this to the Vance family. On the 1900 &1902 Tax rolls
reference is made to Burns Mill Graveyard and Burns Graveyard and thereafter
merely known as Vance.
12. Names on markers
in this cemetery are Suggs, Davis, Sherfields,
Ragland, Curr. I found
references to four of the families in the 1900 &1910 Cemetery
Transcriptions by Imogene Springer. The microfilm for1906 Land Records
list graveyard Township 12, range 2 west, section 10,2 acres N1/2, SE ¼
is this cemetery.
13. Johnny Brummett
says his father said it was Hastings.
Luther Murphree posted a sign with Baily-Hastings and listed people who are
supposed to be buried there, though I don't know his sources. Shed Hill Davis had a reference listing one of the tombstones, which
I also pieced together, which has Beersheba
wife of W. F. Maxey and another piece with 1814 on it. W. F. Maxey is in the
1860 Census Transcriptions by Imogene Springer with a wife whose name starts
with B. and her age would match the 1814 information.
The Davis information for this Maxey marker is Township 13S
Range 1 West ½ of NE ¼of Section 9, which is how I found it.
Springer information has a deed dated 12/18/1852 from Bailey to Freeman with the coordinates of NW ¼
of Township 13, range 1 west, section 9 “except 1 acre graveyard”.

17. I have a
reference to a letter that is at the MS Archives about this cemetery.
18. Griffin Cemetery: In Gary Lee Hawkins' Family History he writes that
his ancestors are buried at Pleasant Grove Cemetery. He said that Imogene Springer told him the
name. It is also referred to as The Tedder Cemetery. When I asked
Mrs. Jim Griffin what the cemetery was called, she said that she was told there
used to be a Friendship Church in the area and it might be part of that, but that
the locals called it the Griffin Cemetery.
19. Old Taylor Cemetery: Interviewing Mrs. Johnie Murphree she said
"her great-grandpa, Solomon Tallent, was buried at Old Taylor with a
sandstone marker, in the northeast corner. Mr. L.V. Adams' mother, Tommie
Adams is also buried there with a sandstone marker. This cemetery was not
at the location where the first Taylor Church was built but was in the
woods." Mrs. Alma Gordon showed me the location on the aerial map
and said that she had turned over a sandstone one time
and found the word "Tallent" scratched on the surface. She
called the cemetery the Tallent Cemetery.
20: Mr. J. B.
Mooneyham asked me if I knew where the Carter Cemetery was located. His
directions matched with this Cozart Cemetery. He said that the Carters
and Cozarts had connected by marriage.
These pages started as a
submitted list. The directions and additional names were obtained using
references in materials compiled by: Shed Hill and Rebecca Davis in 1985-87,
Dr. William D. McCain’s list from 1975 era, Imogene Springer’s
Cemetery listings at the public libraries and Weyerhaeuser.
The physical directions were obtained by
Rose Diamond, assisted by Calhoun County residents with knowledge of these areas. In other
words, I drove and asked or called and asked a lot of folks!!
In no way is blame being placed on anyone
or to any group for sites that are no longer available for public use, nor is
anyone criticized for lack of maintenance at some sites.
If you use these directions to try to
locate these sites, I am in no way responsible if you get lost, if you break
your body or your vehicle, or if harm befalls you because of trespassing.
Hunt at your own risk!
