TO INCORPORATE FLAT RIVER

The Progressive Club had an interesting meeting on Monday night, March 12. About sixty men of Flat River assembled and took up some matters of vital importance to the future of Flat River. C. R. Pratt of the Water Works Committee reported a meeting with Mr. Crane, Superintendent of St. Joe Lead Company, in which meeting Mr. Crane advised the Committee to incorporate Flat River, and that his Company would assist them in every way possible in incorporating and in floating bonds to make the necessary improvements. This report was welcome news to the Club as heretofore the St. Joe Lead Company and the Doe Run Lead Company have opposed the incorporation movement.

The attention of the Meeting naturally turned toward taking the necessary steps toward incorporating. The form of government was discussed, and since the bill permiting cities of the 3d and 4th class to have Commission Form of Government had not yet become a law and because the majority of the members were unfamiliar with the Commission Form of Government, the decision on the form that should be adopted for Flat River was postponed until the next meeting, Monday night, March 26, which will also be held at Tuckers Store.

The President of the Club appointed as a Committee on incorporating the town, C. E. Marshall, C. R. Bramblet and D. H. Cameron. This Committee was empowered to secure the service of an attorney, and proceed with the necessary steps to incorporate. This it will do as soon as it can get the necessary advice from the Attorney General.

The Club also heard an interesting address by C. R. Pratt, President of the Flat River Building and Loan Association, on the good of such an Association to the town, and the men of Flat River were urged to take stock and assist it in the good work that the Association is doing and can do for Flat River in increasing the number of home owners in the town.

The President appointed J. C. Houser, F. M. Horton, E. C. Schramm and H. E. Leverenze as a Committee to make the necessary arrangements for oiling the streets. These men have served us in the past and have given such excellent service that the President of the Club saw fit to appoint them for the coming year.

Another matter taken up was the regulation of the speed of automobiles through Flat River, and the Club ordered the Secretary to communicate with the County Court requesting that Body to place speed breakers at the dangerous corners in the town, and make other precautions to lessen the speed of reckless drivers through the town and secure as far as possible the safety of the children and other pedestrians.

The dire need of a new depot in Flat River was discussed at some length. The Club ordered the Secretary to confer with the M.R. & B.T. Officials requesting that they build a depot in Flat River commensurate with the great volume of freight and passenger traffic and at the request of the Secretary, the President appointed the following Committee to assist in this conference with the M.R. & B.T. Officials, W. E. Coffer, H. Tucker and C. R. Pratt.

This was by far the best and most interesting meeting that we have had, and at this time forty-three men have paid the membership fee and become bonafide members of the Club. At our next meeting Monday night, March 26, the Club will decide on the form of Government that shall be adopted for Flat River, the amount of territory that shall be taken into the incorporation and other matters vital to incorporating the town.

Everybody interested in the good of Flat River should make it a point to be present at this meeting. We especially urge every tax payer to be present and assist in securing the best possible form of government and city officials. It is to your interest to come, remember the date and place, March 26, at Tucker's Store.
