Toby Heck, age 68, was run down and killed by a freight train in the Bismarck yards about 6 o'clock Sunday morning. He had been employed in caring for the switch lights and was gathering lamps, preparatory to refilling and cleaning them at the time the accident happened. There were no witnesses to the accident and the train crew was not aware that they had killed a man until informed later.

The body was discovered by Chas. Hitzman. From its appearance the train had evidently passed over the unfortunate man more than once while switching about the yards. Heck was an old resident of Bismarck and had been employed by the Missouri Pacific there for more than 25 years. Friends at the inquest conducted by Coroner Prather stated that the company wanted to place Mr. Heck on the retired list and pension him the first of December, but at his request had allowed him to remain at work until the first of the year.
