ROLLA CLAYWELL KILLED AT NO. 2
(1906)

On last Friday morning about 1:30 o'clock, while forcing oil from an oil barrel into lubricators of the machinery in the engine room at the Doe Run Lead Co.'s shaft No. 2, the pressure of compressed air bursted the barrel, portions of which struck Rolla Claywell, who was employed as an engineer, breaking his neck and killing him instantly.  Pieces of the barrel struck the unfortunate man under the lower jaw, breaking it on either side and his neck as well.

Mr. Claywell was married and resided in Flat River, and was 47 years old.  The remains were taken to Bonne Terre on Sunday morning on the 10 o'clock train and laid to rest.  The funeral was conducted by the I.O.O.F. of which he was a member, and was attended by a large number of brother Odd Fellows.

Deceased leaves a wife and four small children together with a mother, two brothers and five sissters to mourn his unfortunate end, one of the latter being Mrs. J. A. Bean of this place.  To the family and relatives we extend our sympathy.

Note:  The above article came to us as an undated clipping.   According to Bonne Terre Cemetery listing, Mr. Rolla Claywell died was born in 1862 and died on June 5, 1909.
