GEORGE W. CRUMP PENSIONED

Mr. and Mrs. G. W. Crump are residents of Leadwood. Mr. Crump was born in Bonne Terre, the son of Oliver and Rachel (Pirtle) Crump. He was pensioned by the St. Joseph Lead Company on May 1, 1955. Mrs. Crump was Miss Minnie Lewis of Libertyville. Her brother, William Lewis of Esther, is a pensioner of St. Joe.

Mr. Crump began to earn his livelihood as a blacksmith's helper at the age of 15. He learned to build and repair wagons, to shoe horses, and to do other work concerned with the trade, with the result that he spent all of his years of employment with St. Joe as a blacksmith and ironworker.

He will now be in business for himself. He is the owner of a large drilling outfit which is presently at work in the Iron Mountain Lake area under other management, with jobs booked well into the future. He plans to spend part of his time at drilling, and to live in Florida during the winter months. The site for his Florida home has already been purchased. There his son Burl will construct the house in which he and Mrs. Crump will spend their winters.

Mr. and Mrs. Crump have six children living, and nine grandchildren. A son, Donald Lee, died in infancy. The three Crump daughters are married. Dwana is the wife of Ted Hodges. Ted is a Navy Aviation Pilot stationed in the Philippines. Leona married Melvin Hayes, and Hazel is Mrs. Harry Hughes of St. Louis. Mr. and Mrs. Hayes now live in Miami, Florida. Two of the Crump sons are also in Florida: Burl, employed by the government in a construction project; and Paul, a salesman for Chrysler, Dodge, and Plymouth. Ralph Crump of Leadwood is an Ironworker in the Underground Machine Shop of St. Joe at Leadwood.

Mr. Crump's skill as a blacksmith and ironworker has been of great use to St. Joe. He states that he was the designer of the safety gates which were put to use in the local mines. During the weeks immediately prior to his retirement he worked at the forge in the Special Service Shop in Desloge.
