ARTHUR HUGHES KILLED IN MINE
ACCIDENT THURSDAY

     Arthur Hughes, a 36-year-old Desloge man, met instant death in an accident underground at the National Mine, Desloge division, of St. Joseph Lead Co., at 12: 30 p.m. Thursday, August 11.

     Hughes was working from a hanging scaffold when a large piece of rock evidently pulled loose and struck the scaffold causing Hughes to fall about 20 feet.  He was killed instantly, his neck having been broken.   His safety harness had a rope attached, the other end secured to an iron bolt in the ceiling, and the support was pulled out, caused by the falling rock or the weight of Hughes when he fell.

     Jodie Marler, 41, of Irondale, who was working with Hughes, also fell from the scaffold, but his rope held and he escaped with two fractured ribs.  He was taken to Bonne Terre Hospital.

     Hughes' body was removed to the C. Z. Boyer & Son Funeral Home in Desloge, where an inquest will be held.

     Hughes was married and has two children.

Arthur Milton Hughes is listed as being buried in St. Francois Memorial Park Cemetery near Desloge, Missouri.  He was born Sept. 6, 1913, and died Aug. 11, 1949.  Listing also indicates that he was married to Gladys (Fisher) on June 20, 1934, and was son of Arzo Bert & Elizabeth (Flanger) Hughes.
