William G. Shumake was born near Hazel Run Creek, St. Francois County, Mo., January 27, 1836. His father, George W. [Washington] Shumake, entered 120 acres of land near French Village and Mr. Shumake bought the land in 1857. This farm is still held by heirs. [Mother of William G. Shumake: Mary Peyton Shumake]
On the 17th of July he entered in Capt. Allen Cook's company of Home Guards and served
until September 28, 1861, guarding bridges on the St. Louis and Iron Mountain R.R. Upon
being discharged he re-enlisted in Company K, 10th Missouri Cavalry, volunteers, where he
served until the close of the war. He was discharged from the 2nd Missouri Cavalry,
Merril's Horse.

Mr. Shumake was married three times, was the father of sixteen children, the grandfather of sixty-four and the great-grandfather of twenty-six. He died January 12th, 1907, aged 72 years.
His two youngest sons served in the World War. Wm. G. Shumake, Jr., saw active service in France, Edgar Shumake also serving thru the war.
