The Local Board for St. Francois County has received the following telegram from the Provost Marshal General Crowder:
"In order that District Boards may review all classifications by Local Boards in case of marriage since May 18, 1917, and secure uniformity of action all Government Appeal Agents shall be instructed to appeal cases where Local Boards have granted deferred classification in either Class II or Class IV on account of such marriages. Crowder."
In accord with the instructions in this telegram the Board has adopted a ruling that all registrants married since May 18, 1917, should be placed in class 1 and be permitted to appeal to the District Board. This has been done in all cases and will be done with all cases yet to be classified. Registrants who fall in this Class should take especial notice of the above telegram and they should continue to furnish this office with affidavits to the effect that their marriage was not to evade military service. Unless such proof is offered the District Board cannot give any consideration to the claim for the deferred clasification.
On Wednesday the Local Board inducted into service at Camp Funston Davis Turner, who had failed to register. Turner claimed to have registered in Poplar Bluff but the authorities found this statement to be false and he confessed that he did not register at all. He was held in the County Jail awaiting orders from the Federal Authorities and this week United States District Attorney, Oliver, ordered the Local Board to induct him into service immediately and stated that if this was done he would not prosecute Turner for failure to register. Turner was arrested last summer on a charge of having obtained money under false pretense. At the time of his arrest he was living at Elvins. He has a wife and two children.
Final Classification cards have been sent out up to and including 996. The following is the number placed in each class:
Class 1, 114; Class 2, 1; Class 3, 26; Class 4, 469; Class 5, 80.
Examination days have been set for January 29th and January 31st. It is supposed that about 50 who have been placed in class 1 will be examined each day. The names of those to be examined next week are not available.
