John Margrieter, D. O., Kirkwood, grew up in Flat River and entered the Army via the St. Francois County Selective Service Board in February, 1944.

Margrieter has a copy of the Friday, Dec. 15, 1944 edition of The Lead Belt News, which tells of his time in an army hospital in England.

"Pvt. John Margrieter, only son of Dr. and Mrs. J. L. Margrieter of Flat River, is in an army hospital in England, recuperating from wounds received on Oct 28 while on voluntary mission with the British in Holland," the newspaper article began.

"Pvt. Margrieter was evacuated by plane to England, his parents have been informed.  He was wounded in the left thigh by an armor piercing bullet but no permanent injury is expected."

Margrieter recalls his mother saved the newspaper because it told of the injury to him, as well as several others, and also contained many other articles about St. Francois County citizens in the war.

The DAILY JOURNAL, St. Francois County., Wednesday, April 26, 1995.
