BODY OF CAPT. LYTLE SHOEMAKE
RETURNED HERE FOR BURIAL.
Capt. Lytle W. Shoemake [Shumake] and his crew members who were reported missing
in action in World War II on May 24, 1944, were found in a trench in September, 1951,
where their plane had been shot down while bombing in the Russian Zone
near Berlin.
Capt. Shoemake and his crew left the United States in March, 1944 and were on their
thirteenth mission when the plane was shot down. The bodies will arrive at Jefferson
Barracks on Dec. 11, where funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Burial
will be in the Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery.
Capt. Shoemake was the son of Mrs. James Shoemake of Wortham and the late Mr. Shoemake.
