Harold G. Greene of Bonne Terre was a Staff Sergeant in the Army Air Force during
World War II. Mr. Greene died Oct. 10, 1978. He was born in Bonne Terre Nov. 24, 1918.
Greene served in North Africa and Sicily, Italy during the war. His sister, Frances V. Greene of Farmington relates
the following:
"In World War II there was no Air Force as it exists today. The Army, Navy and Marines had their own Air
Force."
"Staff Sergeant Greene was in the campaign in North Africa
that chased the wily German General Rommel all over North Africa until they finally caught
up with him.
"Harold was then stationed in Sicily, Italy. He served there from 1941 to 1945, when he was
returned to the state of Washington for discharge.
"He was a machinist and often told stories of making small
parts on a lathe for the airplanes, in order to keep them flying. Also, after getting cleaned up after much work in
the mud and muck, enemy bombers flew over."
