SGT. DARRELL TONGAY |

Sgt. Darrell Tongay, 21 year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. E. C. Tongay [Emmett C. and Beatrice Tongay] of Flat River, has been reported killed in action in France on August 27, 1944, according to a telegram from the War Department received on Thursday, September 14th. |
| Darrell was born on June 12, 1923, and
attended Esther and Flat River schools. He entered service in January, 1943, and received
training at Camp Hood and Camp Bowie, Texas and Camp Polk, La. He was sent overseas on
February 14, 1944 and landed in England, later going to France. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Jeanne Bernie Tongay and a one-year-old daughter, Joanne, who reside in St. Louis. Before entering service Darrell was employed in St. Louis with the Anderson Motor Transport, as mechanic. A brother, Sgt. Frank C. Tongay, who is stationed in New Guinea, was seriously injured in action on July 11th, the second time he had been wounded. Besides his wife and daughter, parents and brother he leaves six sisters: Alta (Mrs. E. R.) Smith, Alma (Mrs. Robert) Cross and Nita (Mrs. Walter) Tebeau of St. Louis; Eva, Jean and Dottie Jo, at home. The last letter received Saturday by Mr. and Mrs. Tongay was written by Darrell on August 24th, in which he stated he was in Germany and was all right.
