Clinton H. Crane served as President of St. Joseph Lead Company (a/k/a St. Joe Lead Company) from December 12, 1912, to May 12, 1947. In addition to serving as president for 34 years, Clinton H. Crane was the first Chairman of the Board of Trustees of St. Joe from May 12, 1947, to May 13, 1957. Through his leadership, business judgment, high standards of business conduct and administrative ability, Clinton H. Crane played a major role in the growth and success of St. Joseph Lead Company. Clinton Crane died on December 1, 1958. During the early 1950's, Crane wrote Mining Memories. Though originally intended for publication, the book was not published, as it was believed it would have limited appeal. The manuscript was rediscovered in 1986 during an examination of historical files dealing with St. Joe's centenary celebration. A decision was made to have the manuscript published in-house and make it available to interested St. Joe staff. Minor changes were made in the manuscript to allow for smoother reading. Mining Memories is a fascinating document describing the early history and growth of one of the world's premier mining companies. It should be noted that the memories and opinions stated in Mining Memories were those of Mr. Crane.
