Pleads Innocent In Murder Case -
The attorney for Mrs. Betty Lou Moore, 29, of Belton, accused of first
degree murder in connection with the deaths of her husband and two
children, filed a plea of not guilty by reason of insanity in
magistrate court at Harrisonville Tuesday afternoon.
The attorney placed in the record a statement that Mrs. Moore’s family
physician said that laboratory tests definitely showed Mrs. Moore to
be pregnant. The preliminary hearing was waived, and Mrs. Moore was
bound over to Cass County Circuit Court on the charge.
Funeral services had been held at Osceola last week for her husband,
Charles Moore, 25, and the children, Mendy Janell, 5, and David, 4.
Mrs. Moore was brought here to view the bodies. The parents of the
husband retained the attorney to represent Mrs. Moore, explaining that
“we love her as any member of the family, and we want to see her given
a fair chance.”

Mrs. Moore Is Acquitted On Insanity Plea -
A verdict of acquittal by sole reason of insanity was handed down by
Judge William M. Kimberlin in circuit court in Harrisonville last
Wednesday in the case of Mrs. Betty Lou Moore, 30, who was charged
with the slaying of her husband and two children in Belton on November
27, 1959.
The husband, Charles Robert Moore, was a native of the St. Clair
County area, and funeral services for the three were held from Osceola
last year.
A verdict of acquittal by sole reason of insanity was handed down by
Judge William M. Kimberlin in circuit court in Harrisonville yesterday
afternoon (Wednesday) in the case of Mrs. Betty Lou Moore, 30, who was
charged with the slaying of her husband and children in Belton on
November 27, 1959.
Judge Kimberlin further directed that since the defendant has
apparently not recovered from her insanity, that she be confined in a
state hospital.
The case of the State of Missouri, represented by A.J. (Jack)
Anderson, Cass County prosecutor, was presented Wednesday morning. The
state asked a verdict of guilty of first degree murder.
After a brief recess in the morning, Delton Houchens, Warrensburg,
Mo., attorney for the defense, began presentation of the case for the
defense. After lunch, testimony was resumed and the findings of Judge
Kimberlin were presented at 1:30 p.m.
Mrs. Moore was charged with fatally shooting her husband, Charles
Robert Moore, 25; their daughter, Menty Jeaneette; and their son,
David, who was three years old, in the family home in Belton on
November 27, 1959.
She was arrested in Grand Island, Nebr., the next day after she called
police and told them of the shooting. Brought to the county jail in
Harrisonville, Mrs. Moore was arraigned in magistrate court here,
where she waived a preliminary hearing.
The case was automatically transferred to circuit court where Judge
Kimberlin, on motion of the prosecutor, ordered Mrs. Moore confined to
the state hospital in Fulton, Mo., for mental examination. An
affidavit by her attorney, Delton Houchens of Warrensburg, Mo.,
attested to his client’s pregnancy. Mrs. Moore bore a son last month.
The defendant waived a jury trial, which left the decision in the case
up to Judge Kimberlin after consideration of the evidence.
Appearing on behalf of the defense were a psychologist and two
psychiatrists who testified that Mrs. Moore was suffering from
schizophrenia at the time of the slayings. – Harrisonville Democrat –

Man Dies; Body Burned By Flame-
James Moore, about 70, died on the porch of his home in Osceola about
10:20 a.m. Wednesday of this week, and a subsequent fire in the chair
in which he was sitting burned pretty well over Moore's body. It also
burned up the chair.
The blaze was discovered by Kenny Keller, who resides nearby. Moore's
residence was in a cabin immediately to the northeast of the Wagon
Bridge over the Sac-Osage.
Moore, resident of St. Clair County many years, had retired from the
farm and moved to Osceola in recent years.
St. Clair County Coroner F. B. Goodrich said that Moore apparently
suffered a heart attack, and the cigarette dropped into the overstuffed
chair to start the blaze, which burned for some time before being
discovered.

MINER KILLED -
James Moore, an Employee of Beck's Coal Mine, Killed By a Fall of
Rock. -
James H. Moore, a miner employed at C. A. Beck's mine, was caught
by a fall of slate this afternoon and killed. He was at work in his
room at the time and was down on his knees digging and while in a
stooping position the large rock which would weigh about two tons
fell and landed on his back and forced his head and shoulders down
between his feet. The rock rested partly on a pile of rubbish which
prevented him from instant death. W. A. Cooper, another miner who
worked in the adjoining room, heard the fall and Moore's smothered
cries for help. He rushed to his assistance and when he got to him
he was unable to speak but he was breathing heavily and was in a conscious
condition. Cooper summoned help as quick as possible but nothing could
be done for the unfortunate man until jack screws could be procured
and a trip into the city had to be made before they could be had.
Moore gradually stopped breathing and within fifteen or twenty minutes
life was extinct. The accident happened about two o'clock and it was
ten minutes past three before the body was got out from under the
awful weight. No bones were broken nor were there any bruises to speak
of. His face, however, was black showing that life had been crushed
out of him by degrees. The body was taken to the home of W. A. Cooper,
311 West Forest avenue, where he boarded. He was a brother of Dan
Moore, employed in the Durkee Coal company at Weir City and also a
wife and three children living in Doty, Missouri. They were notified
by telegram of the accident immediately after the body was taken out.
The rock is what is known among miners as pot rock, and there is no
guessing its thickness, as the sound is very deceiving when struck
with a pick or hammer. Moore had thirteen cars of coal out for his
days work ready to go up to the top and would have knocked off work
for the day within twenty or thirty minutes longer. Justice Campbell
was summoned as acting coroner and visited the scene and viewed the
body and after an investigation into the fact decided that no inquest
was necessary. He found the mine in splendid condition and safe in
every particular.

MOORE, William Edgar
Osceola Library Files
William Edgar Moore was born in Macon County, Missouri, October 10,
1881, and passed away August 19, 1958. He was the son of Isaac and
Anne Moore. His father died when the son was only eight years of age.
At the age of 18 he came with his mother where they settled near Monegaw
Springs, Mo. Here he spent near the place, the rest of his years,
until about 11 years ago, he and his wife moved to Appleton City,
where they made their home until death called him away.
He had been in failing health for the last seven years, in fact he
was an invalid, being cared for by his wife and children.
He was married to Katie E. Perrine October 16, 1906. To this union
were born five children - Russie May, Hazel Bell, and Hubert Elmer,
who preceded him in death, Waneta Allis and Claude Moore who resides
in Appleton City, Mo.
Besides his children, he leaves his wife, 10 grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren,
a brother, Claude of Osceola, Mo., a half-brother, M. D. Sagaser of
Appleton City, Mo., several lesser relatives, and many friends.
Bill, as he was known, was a lover of children and enjoyed having
them around. He liked people and their home was Open House on Saturday
night where the neighbors gathered to visit and make ice cream. As
he and his wife's birthday, and their wedding anniversary were within
a few days of each other, it became the neighborhood custom to celebrate
each year with a basket dinner and social assemblation. This custom
lasted until the death of Hubert in 1947. It was partly the loss of
this child that caused the Moores to move to their present home.
He was a wonderful neighbor. He has walked miles to help, or inquire
about a sick, or needy neighbor. As theirs was the only telephone
in the neighborhood he walked many miles through all kinds of weather
to deliver death and sickness messages, to say nothing about the ones
of lesser importance.
If he had a motto this must have been it: I will look around me to
find someone in need and help him today.
He was saved at the Prairie Home School in 1934. He attended services
at the Church of God Holiness at Monegaw Springs. He was generous
with his time in donating his services for the church, and gave of
the products he produced for the Camp Meeting during the summer.
Funeral services were conducted Thursday afternoon at the Church of
God (Holiness) with the Rev. Glenn Smith of Topeka, Kans. officiating.

were born in Detroit, Michigan and passed away at Monegaw Springs,
Mo., May 24, 1937, at the ages of eleven years, twenty-eight days
and seven years, eight months, and nineteen days respectively.
They were the two oldest boys of five children and were wading in
the backwater of the Osage river in Monegaw Springs when they suddenly
stepped off in the center of a ditch where the water was about nine
feet deep.
They were in company with Bobby Malicote, a boy of seven years old
who was sitting on the bank watching them. After seeing them come
up and go down the third time he ran a short distance and gave the
alarm and many were there within a few minutes. However Bobby was
scared and did not return to the water to direct them to the place
and the bodies were recovered within about forty-five minutes.
These boys were excellent boys and were loved by everyone. Mr. Feaster,

boys that I ever saw." They had lived at Monegaw but a short
time having come here from Kansas City. The father had grown up around
Monegaw Springs but had been away for many years.

MORTENSON, Etha Orva Mitchell
Osceola Library Files
Etha Mitchell Mortenson, 98, was born into the home of Anderson M. and
Sarah Mitchell on Aug. 26, 1888, while they lived in Bethany,
Illinois. As a young child she, with her family, moved to Missouri.
When she was eight years old they moved near El Dorado Springs where
she remained until she retired and moved to Colorado.
Having attended High School in El Dorado Springs, Etha taught school
for a while before she met and married Andrew Mortenson. They were
married when she was 21 years old on Feb. 24, 1910. They were blessed
with the birth of three children. They celebrated 60 years of marriage
before his passing in 1970.
A Baptist all her life, Mrs. Mortenson was always faithful in her love
and service to her Lord.
Etha Mortenson passed from this life Saturday evening, Feb. 14, 1987.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Andrew, and eight of her
brothers and sisters. As well, most of her peers have gone on before
her.
Left to mourn her passing are her sister, Rose Foster, now living in
Billings, Mont.; her son, Chris, with his wife, Thelma, of Thornton;
her daughters, Anita Seamans wit her husband, Floyd, of Thornton, and
Arlene Lyons with her husband, George, of Aurora.
Etha was a lady who found great pleasure in life. She loved doing
needle work, and made countless quilts and sewed for people in nursing
homes making lap robes for their comfort. She was ever busy at home
with her garden and canning and in her church. She always seemed to go
at a full run, never one to move to a task slowly.
Mrs. Mortenson was a good neighbor, willing to make herself available
to sit with the sick or help when a baby was born.
This fine lady lived long and she lived well until the Lord called her
home. The final resting place for the temple in which she lived will
be beside that of her husband in the Fairmont Cemetery.

MURPHY, Eva Marie Ballard
St. Clair County Courier,
Friday, 9 May 2008
Eva Marie Murphy was born March 30, 1921 in Lowry City to Robert Alvin
and Clara Bell [Mayer] Ballard. She passed away May 3, 2008 at
Centerpoint Hospital, Independence.
Eva Marie Ballard Murphy was a lady, loved and admired by many
relatives, friends and neighbors.
During her younger years and while she was in good health, Eva enjoyed
camping and fishing, shopping and having lunch with friends and an
occasional trip to the Casino. She enjoyed going places and meeting
people.
Eva was a wonderful wife, daughter, sister and aunt. She was extremely
active as a caregiver and devoted many hours to her mother, brothers
and her husband in their last years of life. She gave so much to
others when they needed it, yet she was reluctant to ask for
assistance for herself as her own health began to fail.
Eva never had any children but she would have been a very good mother.
She loved and enjoyed children very much, That was evident as many
years ago she often had nieces and nephews at her house for visits of
a day or a week at a time. It was always a fun time and they would
leave looking forward to the next visit. That love carried on to
recent times as she always welcomed and enjoyed visits from great
great nieces and nephews.
Eva leaves us with many wonderful memories and will be sadly missed by
all who knew her.
