Rita LaVerne Shaffner was born July 19, 1936, at Deepwater to Delbert Wesley and Blanche Ellen Tally Shaffner. She went to be with the Lord May 3, 2006, at Four Seasons Living Center, Sedalia. Rita grew up in the Deepwater and Lowry City area. She graduated from Appleton City High School and went to Kansas City to work as an accountant. She was a member of Pleasant Valley Baptist Church. She married Robert Cafer in 1983, who preceded her in death in 1993. She also was preceded in death by her father and mother as well as a brother, Leland Shaffner of Las Cruces, N.M. Surviving are her son, Rowland C. Weaver, Jr., and his wife, Mickey; her grandson, Rowland C. Weaver III of Las Cruces, N.M.; her granddaughter, Kristi Weaver Larson of Enterprise, Ala.; her sister-in-law, Judy Shaffner of Las Cruces along with Colleen Antone of Las Cruces; Darrel and Brenda Antone of Topeka; and Layton and Jana Shaffner of Dallas. Rita had several nieces and nephews, great nieces, great nephews, and other relatives and friends who survive. Funeral services were held at the Vansent-Mills Chapel on Sunday, May 7 with Dr. Randy Shipman officiating. The musical selections were "Amazing Grace", "Where He Leads Me", and "In The Sweet Bye and Bye" sung by the Jubilee Singers.
Casketbearers were Rowland C. Weaver III, Donnie Murray, Darrell Antone, Layton Shaffner, Walt Stubbs and Lawrence Tally. Interment was in the Lowry City Cemetery, Lowry City, under the direction of Vansant-Mills Funeral Home of Clinton.

Mary LaBelva Call, 85, of Kansas City, Kan., passed away August 28, 2007. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 4, at Charter Funerals, 10250 Shawnee Mission Parkway. Friends may call from 10 a.m. until service time. Graveside services will be at Freeman-Holsapple Cemetery in Collins, Mo., on Tuesday at 3 p.m., Rev. Gary Strickland, Collins Christian Church, is officiating. LaBelva was born October 3, 1921, in Jonesboro, Ark., and lived most of her adult life in Kansas City, Kan., before moving to Collins. She retired from Sunshine Biscuits, Inc. She was a member of Collins Christian Church. She enjoyed sewing, reading, bowling, quilting, crocheting, friends and family. She is survived by two daughters, Zelma Ann Sully (Owen), and Barbara Ellen Nyhart (Steven); four grandchildren, Carl Adam Nyhart, Sheila Ann Russell, Owen Sully Jr. and Shauna Lynn Rhea; ten great grandchildren, one great-great granddaughter, and many nieces and nephews. Mary LaBelva Call, 85, of Collins, passed away Aug. 28, 2007. Funeral services were Tuesday, Sept. 4, at Charter Funerals, 10250 Shawnee Mission Parkway. Rev. Gary Strickland, Collins Christian Church, was officiating. LaBelva was born October 3, 1921 in Jonesboro, Ark., and lived most of her adult life in Kansas City, Kan., before moving to Collins. CALVIRD, Roy Lee Jr.

Roy L. "Buck" Calvird, Jr., died Sunday, August 18, 1996 at Golden Valley Hospital, Clinton, Mo. Memorial funeral services will be held at 7:00 p.m., Wednesday, August 21, at the Anderson Funeral Home, 3rd and Grandriver, Clinton, with Rev. Richard Page officiating. The family will receive friends after the memorial service at the funeral home. Buck was born in Osceola, May 27, 1934, the son of Roy Lee Calvird, Sr., and Jeannette Averill Drebelbis Calvird. He was a WW II Veteran of the U.S. Marines and had worked as an electrician for the Electrical Worker's Union #124 until retiring in 1981. He had operated the Amvets Club in Urich and had operated Tiff's Fireworks and other fireworks stands in the area for the past ten years. He was a member of the Eagles Lodge and the American Legion in Clinton and was a member of Amvets Post #120 in Urich. Mr. Calvird is survived by his wife, Veta, of the home, as well as four daughters, Tammy Louise Calvird, Clinton; Terri Brownsberger, Montrose; Tracy Burns, Clinton; Tiffany Tate, Clinton; and five grandchildren: Kellan Palmer, Amber Palmer, Danielle Pennington, Dakota Calvird and Dalton Tate. He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Nancy Calvird. Mr. Calvird's cremation remains will be buried in the Osceola Cemetery, Osceola, Mo.

CAMERON, Christopher Scott

Christopher Scott Cameron was born Dec. 24, 1988 in El Dorado Springs to Bryan Scott Cameron and Kimberly Kay Swofford. He passed away Sept. 28, 2008 from injuries received in an automobile accident.
Chris attended Osceola Schools from kindergarten through high school, graduating in 2007. He was an avid hunter and fisherman. He enjoyed spending time with his friends. Chris was a concrete finisher and enjoyed working with Robert Williams and his sons. Chris was raised by his loving grandmother, Linda Swofford, who survives him. He is also survived by his mother, Kim Swofford, Madisonville, KY; father Bryan Cameron and wife Brenda, Archie; grandfather Bill Swofford and step-grandmother Becky Bowman, Madisonville, KY; brothers, Justin Swofford, Osceola, Scott Cameron, Kansas City; sisters, Kayla Vanover, Madisonville, KY, Tamera Cameron and Kelly Cameron, both of Archie; numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and many, many friends.
Services were held Thursday, Oct. 2 at Sheldon-Goodrich Chapel officiated by Minister Greg Mangum.
Music selections included "Amazing Grace", "When I Get Where I'm Going" and "Photograph". Casketbearers included Justin Swofford, Bradley Cameron, Cory Smith, Austin Weant, R.D. Williams, Steve Cameron.
Interment was held in Lowry City Cemetery. Arrangements were made by Sheldon-Goodrich Funeral Home, Osceola.

Otis Wesley Cameron, 68, a resident of Graysville, died Sunday morning, March 31, 1996, at his home. He was born July 6, 1927, at Osceola, the son of Sherman and Cora Schaffer Cameron. He was united in marriage to Pat Cameron and six children were born to this union, Becky Powell of Osceola, Rita Jo Cameron, Clinton, Lou Ann Cameron, Kansas City, Robert Otis Cameron, Kansas City, Cindy Cameron, Kansas City, and Charles Cameron, Osceola. He was later united in marriage to Sharon Marie Hookham of Greely, Colorado, on July 19, 1970, and to this union two children were born, Kenneth Lee Cameron, Livonia, and Brenda Marie Cameron of Clinton.  Also surviving are 12 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; one brother, Sherman Cameron of Farmington, and one sister, Pearl Shipley of Elm Springs, Arkansas.  He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Charles Cameron.  He was raised in Osceola and later lived in Kansas City, Kansas, Nebraska and Iowa. He had worked construction, farming and other various jobs. He enjoyed gardening, fishing and other outdoor activities. Graveside services will be Thursday, April 4, at the Osceola Cemetery.

Cameron Memorial Fund and may be left at the funeral home. Sherman was born in Osceola, Missouri. He was an Army veteran. He was a custodian for the Windsor Senior Center. He was a member of the the American Legion in Windsor. He was preceded in death by his parents, Sherman L. and Cora Schaffer Cameron and two brothers, Otis Cameron and Charles Cameron. He is survived by his wife, Sharon of the home; four sons, Steven Cameron, Danny Cameron, Robert Cameron and Donald Cameron all of Cole Camp, Missouri; three daughters, Sandy and Linda both of Cole Camp, Missouri and Sharon of Warsaw, Missouri; one sister, Pearl Shipley of Joplin, Missouri and a number of grandchildren and great grandchildren; two step children, Kenneth Cameron and wife, Heather and their three children of Knobnoster, Missouri and Brenda Grubb and husband, Mike of Lowry City, Missouri as well as a number of other relatives and friends.

CAMPBELL, Laura Belle Smith

Funeral services were held Monday, June 26, at Lowry City United Methodist Church for Laura Belle Campbell, who died at her home in Lowry City June 24, 1972 at the age of 82 years, one month and six days. Burial was made in Lowry City cemetery under the direction of Goodrich Funeral Home. Laura Belle Smith, daughter of Louis and Carrie Smith, was born at Weatherby, Mo., in Dekalb Co., May 18, 1890. She was married to George Robert Campbell March 20, 1906. In 1919 they moved from Forbes, Mo., to a farm in the Ohio community, later moving to Lowry City. She became a member of the Lowry City United Methodist Church. Survivors are one son, Orville Campbell, Montrose; one daughter, Mrs. Dorothy Hefele of the home; two granddaughters, Mrs. Charles Huenefeldt, Jr., Springfield, Ohio, and Mrs. LeRoy Cook, Butler; one great granddaughter, Tiffany Ann Huenefeldt. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, two brothers and two sisters.

Michel Renee Hicks Campbell, age 36, of Wheatland passed away Friday, July 28, 2006 in Cox Medical Center South in Springfield after a short battle with lung cancer. She was born Feb. 4, 1970 in Fort Riley, Kan. to Jerry Hicks and Laura Hurst. She was a homemaker. She resided at her grandparents Bud and Dorothy Clary's home in Wheatland before becoming ill. She is survived by four daughters, Crystal M. Hicks, Jessica L. Eidson of Osceola, Amber C. Hicks of Wheatland and Laura K. Campbell of Osceola; two step children, Kristen A. Campbell and David C. Campbell of Osceola; a brother, Michael S. Hicks of Kansas City; a sister, Brandi M. French of Buffalo and her grandparents, Bud and Dorothy Clary and her ex-husband of 16 years, Sid Campbell of Osceola. Visitation for Mrs. Michele Campbell will be Saturday, Aug. 5 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. in Pitts Chapel, Bolivar. Arrangements are under the directions of Pitts Chapel, Bolivar.

Orville Smith Campbell, 88, died Sunday, April 7, 1996, at Bates County Memorial Hospital in Butler. He was born July 23, 1907, in Livingston County near Chillicothe, the son of George Robert and Laura Belle (Smith) Campbell. He was a retired Hereford cattle farmer who had farmed in the Altona and Round Prairie communities and the Teays Chapel area east of Montrose. He was a member of the Teays Chapel United Methodist Church near Appleton City. He married Thelma J. Cordell, March 1, 1945, in Clinton. He was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife, Thelma of the home; his two daughters, Virginia Huenefeldt and husband Charles of Centralia, and Orvine Cook and husband Leroy of Butler; six grandchildren, Tiffany McClure of San Angelo, Texas, Chuck and Treena Huenefeldt of Centralia and Amy, Susie and Will Cook of Butler. Funeral services will be held at the Hill and Son Funeral Home in Appleton City, Thursday, April 11. Burial will be in Harmony Cemetery, Appleton City.

Funeral services will be Sunday at the Hill and Son Funeral Home, Appleton City, with burial in Harmony Cemetery, Appleton City.

CAPPS, Ada Irene Pinkley
Ada Irene Pinkley Capps, 86, daughter of Horace and Maude Pinkley, was born on June 17, 1924. She left her earthly home and her dear family to be with her heavenly Lord and Savior on June 18, 2010, after several years of various illnesses. Ada lived several years in the Kansas City area until after the death of her husband, Glen Capps. After Glen’s death, she moved to Chanute, KS, to be close to her sister, Maudie M. Churchill. Ada lived several years in Chanute, KS, until after Maudie’s death. After the death of her sister, Maudie, Ada then moved to El Dorado Springs in the fall of 2001 to be near what family she had left. Her family then consisted of several nieces and nephews. Ada accepted Jesus as her Lord and Savior several years ago. She worshipped at Blue Ridge Holiness Church. She was united in marriage to Arthur Glen Capps on June 28, 1947. To this union they adopted one child, Robert James Capps, who was born January 10, 1962. After retirement, Glen and Ada traveled all over the U.S. to bluegrass festivals. She absolutely loved bluegrass music. Glen and Ada came from the city every weekend to spend time with nieces and nephews in this area and in the Collins area. They loved their nieces and nephews so much, they would take turns taking them back to the city with them for a few days at a time. She had several grandchildren. She was especially close to Rebecca, Stephanie and Josh Capps who live here in El Dorado Springs not far from Ada’s home. Ada was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Glen, and her sister, Maudie, and several other family members. She is survived by her son, Robert James Capps; her grandchildren - Jason, Josh, Stephanie and Rebecca Capps; her daughter-in-law, Christine Ann Capps; two sisters-in-law, Corda Verley and Bonnie Capps; many nieces, nephews and a host of dear friends and Annie Spencer and Lois Hood whom she loved dearly. Services were held Tuesday, June 22, in the Sheldon Chapel with Rev. James Coleman and Rev. Brent Bland officiating. Music was Amazing Grace by Stephanie Capps, In the Garden by Jannah Farrington and In My Father’s House. Casketbearers were – Joe Barger, Bryan Cloyd, Jared Dutcher, Joshua Capps, Jeff Capps and Greg Powell. Interment was in the Freeman-Holsapple Cemetery, Collins.

Wanda L. Capps, 81, Kansas City North, passed away Nov. 22, 2006, at her home. She was born Sept. 22, 1925 in Collins. She lived most of her life in the Kansas City North area. She worked as a retail grocery clerk before retiring from Thriftway in 1992; then she worked in food service at East Gate Middle School from 1993 until May 2006. Her husband, Walter V. Capps, preceded her in death in 1979. She leaves her son, Dennis Capps, Apollo Beach, Fla.; a daughter, Karen Eastland, Kansas City; a sister, Ruby Reynolds, Raymore; and four grandchildren, all of Kansas City. Services for Wanda were Monday, Nov. 27, at McGilley Antioch Chapel with burial at Mt. Moriah Terrace Park Cemetery under the direction of McGilley Antioch Chapel.

Wanda was born September 22, 1925 in Collins, MO. She lived most of her life in the Kansas City North area. Betty Ann Card was born May 23, 1928 to William L. & Cleta Parker in Chester, Pa. and passed away on Jan. 23, 2007 at Chapin Hill Nursing Home, Redbank, N.J., following a long and courageous battle with a cancer related illness. Betty lived most of her life in Highlands, N.J., where she married Douglas G. Card. Together they raised their family of five children. While raising her family, Betty was an active member of Highlands United Methodist Church where she sang in the choir and served on numerous committees. She also enjoyed her work at Johnson's Florist where she retired in 1988 after many years of dedicated service. Upon retirement she and her husband, Doug, moved to Osceola to be near their daughter and family. Upon moving to Osceola, betty worked on an as-needed basis at Osceola Greenhouse where she developed a friendship with Opal Lyke. She also joined the Osceola Community Choir and Bear Creek United Methodist Church where she served the Lord in song. She was always willing to make a joyful noise. Betty was preceded in death by her parents; son, William D. Card; husband, Doug Card and sisters, Mary Parker and Dorothy Parker. She is survived by her son, Mark Card and his wife, Debbie; son, Wayne Card and his wife, Nanette and daughter, Ruth Card, all of Highlands, N.J., daughter, Betty Lou Garrison and her husband, Ed, Osceola; nine grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; one great-great grandchild and many friends and loved ones. Memorial services for Betty were Tuesday, Jan. 30, at the Bear Creek United Methodist Church with Reverend Carl Whitacre officiating. Musical selections were "In The Garden", "Ivory Palaces" and "Amazing Grace" with the Osceola Community Choir.
Final disposition was cremation under the direction of Sheldon-Goodrich Funeral Home, Osceola.

Douglas G. Card, 78, Osceola, was born Jan. 20, 1927, in Brantford Ontario, Canada, to William and Beatrice Mizor Card. He passed away Wednesday, Feb. 23, 2005. He was married to Betty A. Card on March 3, 1944, of Highalnds, N.J. He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Beatrice Card; and a son, William Chipper Card. Doug is survived by his wife, Betty A. Card, of the home; daughters, Betty  L. and Ed Garrison, Osceola, Ruth Card, Highlands, N.J.; sons, Mark and  Debbie Card, and Wayne and Nanette Card, both of Highland, N.J.; brothers, Russell and Maurine Card, Highland, N.J.; Robert Card, Belford, N.J.; and
sister, Beatrice Clay of Camden, N.J.; nine grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and many other family and friends. Funeral services were held Saturday, Feb. 26, at Sheldon-Goodrich Funeral Chapel, Osceola, with Rev. Carl Whitacre officiating. Music was by Richard Sunderwirth, vocalist and Gail Ingle, accompanist. Final disposition was cremation under the direction of the Sheldon-Goodrich Funeral Chapel, Osceola.

CAREY, Leroy Herbert

Leroy Herbert Carey, 87, Collins, died Tuesday, July 18, 2006, in Cox South Hospital, Springfield. The son of William Harvey and Anna Lucille Boyer Carey, he was born November 8, 1918, at Versailles. Leroy served in the U.S. Army from 1937 to 1945. He was in Honolulu, less than 12 miles from Pearl Harbor, when it was attacked. He served on Guadalcanal, Luzon and in the Central Pacific and was awarded three bronze stars, good conduct medal as well as other campaign ribbons and awards. Leroy and Violet Gannaway were married September 27, 1945. He lived in Kansas City for many years where he was employed 25 years by the Missouri State Highway Department. He had been a resident of Collins since 1982. He was a member of the Humansville Full Gospel Church where he served as a deacon. He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Franklin, Ross and Harry Carey; four sisters, Letha Carey, Jean Brown, Emogene Prince and Faye Gowin; and his step-father, Guy Kennon. Survivors include his wife, Violet, of the home; two children, Bob Carey, Tulsa, Okla., and Shirley Sandy Carey, of the home; a granddaughter, Jean Ann; a great-grandson, Tanner; and a half-brother, Guy Kennon, Jr., Humansville. Funeral services were Friday, July 21, in Murray Funeral Home, Humansville, with Rev. Matt Underwood officiating. Pallbearers were Riley Harris, Gene Wilcutt, John Jolley, Walt Jensen, Bill Goin and Mike Swearingin. Interment was in Humansville Cemetery.

Adella Marlyene (Brown) Carl, Osceola, was born July 25, 1940 to Floyd and Ruby Brown in Harwood. She died Monday, June 3, 2002 at the Missouri Rehabilitation Center in Mt. Vernon, Mo. On January 4, 1957 she married Joe Carl. She was preceded in death by her parents, aunts and uncles, a brother-in-law and a sister-in-law. She is survived by her husband, Joe Carl, of the home; her six children and spouses, Linda and Buddy Brower of Shell City, Mary Carl of Lowry City, Marsha and Michael McCarthy of Lowry City, Nancy and Bud Dillon of Prairie Village, Kansas, Joel and Sharon Carl of Osceola, Ronda and John Stomp of Appleton City; 15 grandchildren; sister, JoAnn Trude, Sheldon; a brother, J. E. Brown, Harwood; aunt and uncle, Mary and Joe Poe of Wichita, Kansas; an uncle; Elmer Kirby, Nevada, many nieces and nephews and cousins. Funeral services will be Thursday, June 6, in the Sheldon-Goodrich Chapel. Burial will be in the Kidds Chapel Cemetery near Lowry City.

Jack Donald Carl, 76, passed away on Thursday, Jan. 29, 2009, at his home in Osceola. He was born Aug. 11. 1932, to Jake Wardrup Carl and Ethel May (O'Bannion) Carl in Osceola. Jack was a graduate from Roscoe High School in 1951. On June 9, 1958, He married Berta Jo Fox and they celebrated their 50th anniversary last year. To this union four children were born and another girl was adopted. Jack Carl was a loving Husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He did not know a stranger and helped anyone in need. He was always there for his family and friends no matter what the circumstances were. He had a big heart and a big size family from blood kin to foster children to just friends that he thought of as family. Before retiring in 1976, Jack worked most of his life as a machinist. For fun, he loved messing with his horses and wagons and going to pony pulling contests with his family. He also loved to just sit and watch his cows grazing in the pasture. Another joy for Jack was telling funny jokes. Jack always got a laugh when his great-grandkids would escape and run down to granddads with their parents chasing them. He could hear their parents yelling for them to stop running, so he knew they were on their way. He always had a Snickers candy bar waiting for them when they got there. The family has many wonderful memories to cherish. Preceding Jack in death were his parents, Jake Carl and Ethel (O'Bannion) Carl; one brother, Johnny Carl at birth; two sisters, Violet Marie Love and Ethel Francis (Peggy) Morris. Jack is survived by his wife, Berta, of the home; three sons – Bill Carl, and wife, Lisa – Clinton, John Carl, and wife Beth – Osceola, and Joe Carl, and fiancee, Shawna – Osceola; two daughters, Laura Self, and husband, James – Osceola, and Victoria Carl – Osceola; 20 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; one foster child, Cindy; four foster grandchildren; one brother, Joe Carl, and wife, Shirley – Osceola; three sisters – Avis Cone – Osceola, Jane Cone – El Dorado Springs, and Bonnie Berry, and husband, Don – El Dorado Springs. Other survivors include several nieces, nephews and cousins. Services were held Monday, Feb. 2, in the Hackleman Chapel – El Dorado Springs, with Greg Magnum officiating. Music selections were The Old Rugged Cross, Go Rest High On The Mountain and When I Get To Where I'm Going. Arrangements were under the direction of Bland-Hackleman Funeral Home – El Dorado Springs.

1 June 1944 - 11 May 2008 - Jerry Edward Carpenter, age 64, son of Leslie Leroy and Ruby Elizabeth (Carroll) Carpenter, was born in May 1, 1944 in Empire, California. He passed away May 11, 2008 at the Veteran’s Administration Medical Center in Kansas City, Missouri. Jerry grew up in the Rockville, Missouri area and had lived in the Taberville and Osceola, Missouri areas throughout his life. He most recently resided in the Kansas City, Missouri area. Before entering the Army Jerry worked for County Club Dairy. He became disabled during his time in the armed service, receiving an honorable medical discharge. While living in Taberville he served as mayor and later donated his home to the community which has been turned into Taberville Park. Jerry enjoyed music, fishing and sports. He was a very generous man and valued friends and family. Jerry was preceded in death by his parents, his stepfather Paul Everson, a sister Neoma Mauer and two nephews Jackie and John Daniel. Survivors include his siblings: Jack Carpenter of Liberty, Missouri, Eva Ballard of Ponca City, Oklahoma, Wanda Otto of Kansas City, Missouri, Leslie Carpenter of Appleton City, Missouri, Janice Schiebrel of Kansas City, Missouri, Linda Shindler of Arkansas City, Kansas, an aunt Jessie Carpenter, numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. John Elonzo Carpenter, age 83, Hollister, Mo, died Wednesday, July 18, 2001, at St. John’s Hospital, Springfield. Jack was born May 28, 1918, on a farm near Collins, the son of William Lovell and Mary Mae (Baumgarden) Carpenter. He grew to manhood in the Collins area, moving to Marion County, Kan., as a young man of 17. He met and married Esther Marie Seibel in Peabody, Kan., Aug 19, 1938, at the First Baptist Church. They had two children, Judy Ann (Carpenter) Litton and Dennis Lee Carpenter. Jack worked as a farm laborer before starting to farm for himself in Marion County. He farmed in conjunction with his father-in-law, Charlie Seibel, and brother-in-law, Jesse Seibel. He was featured as a “Farmer of the Week” in the local newspaper and was on the Peabody Coop Board of Directors. In 1954, Jack purchased an irrigation farm in Scott County, Kansas, where they lived west of Hallow Water for 37 years. In later years, he formed a partnership with his son, Dennis, which included farming and custom ensilage cutting in the Scott County area and even cutting as far away as Shreveport, La., for several years. Upon retirement, he moved to Hollister, located on Lake Taneycomo. Jack lived there for 10 years before moving to Branson in July of this year. In addition, he did custom carpentry work, built several homes in and around Shallow Water, and worked on the construction of the Safeway Grocery Store in Garden City, Kan. Jack became a member of the Gospel Fellowship Church in Shallow Water, Kan. He was on the board of directors for several years. When the then current church building was built, he and Orvil Zink were in charge of construction. Several years later, Jack’s daughter, Judy and her husband, Larry, were the first to be married at the church. Jack and Esther celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary at the church. His leisure time was spent fishing and taking friends and family for boat rides on the lake. All his life, his passion was farming, whether he was actively farming or just enjoying driving in the country looking at the fields and crops through the seasons. He believed in helping his fellow man and contributed time and money to the Salvation Army, Feed the Children, and he delivered meals for the disabled seniors. Mr. Carpenter was often in attendance at the Senior Center in Hollister.
Survivors include his wife, Esther; a daughter Judy; son, Dennis; six grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; one brother, Vernon Carpenter of Kansas City; sisters, Elsie Epperson of Collins, Ruth Hemenway of Hermitage, and Ann Sheets of Dewey, Okla; one sister-in-law, one brother-in-law; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and two sisters.

He died Wednesday, September 11, 2002, at St. John's Regional Healthcare Center in Springfield.  He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Archie Dale, and one sister, Helen Lea Carroll Hawkins.  He is survived by his wife, Joyce McBride Carroll of the home; three sons, Charles Allen of Vibbard, James R. Carroll and Bobby E. Carroll, both of Osceola, eight grandchildren; one great-grandchild; three brothers, James L. Carroll of Osceola, Leslie V. Carroll of Weaubleau, and Johnnie L. CARROLL, Charles Harold
Charles Harold "Doc" Carroll was born in Osceola, MO Dec. 13, 1912 to Laura Ellen Waters Carroll and James Green Carroll and passed away April 11, 1999 at Phoenix Mountain Nursing Center, Phoenix Aria. Due to failing health, he and Josephone moved to Arizona, April 1998 so they could enjoy the sun. Doc, a nickname given to him in his early teens by Fred Brown, lived in the Osceola area most of his life. He joined the Osceola Church of the Brethren where he remained active until the past year. Doc spent a shore time in the wheat harvest in Kansas. He worked in Lake City at Remington Arms during World War II leaving as he had been drafted in the armed services only to be given a reprieve the week before being shipped out, due to a change in the draft. He stayed in Osceola working for Lewis and York Chevrolet. The last several years of his working life he was an independent backhoe and welding contractor for Missouri Public Service working in Clinton.  He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, Frances and Peggy Sherman and one brother, Jim. Doc and Josephine Cripe were united in marriage January 1935. He is survived by his wife, Josephon: a daughter, Marian, Scottsdale, Ariz: two drandaughters, Lea Ann McCaslin, Scottsdale: Pamela Anderson and her husband Matt, Goodyear, Ariz: one brother and sister-in -law, Ray and Paula Carroll, Osceola: nieces, Lena Raines, Wanda Layher, Peg Spiller, Donna Kagel, Connie Post, Nancy Cheney, Pat Griefe, Fern Elliot, Deannie Greenwell, June and Noma: nephews, Roy and Gene Carroll, Gene Bill and Ken Cripe, Donald and Dennis Carroll: other relatives and friends.  Services were held on Saturday, April 17 at 11am at Sheldon-Goodrich Chapel with riv. James Powers and Rev Don Carroll officiating.  Music was provided by Paula Carroll, Vocalist and Gail Ingle Accompanist. Casketbearers were Bill Cripe, Matt Anderson, Bill Foote, Luke Mathews, Kirk Sibley, Marshall Eggert and Ken Cripe.  Honorary Casketbearers were Gene Cripe, Glen Herndon, R.J. Hannah, Carl Delong, and Bob McCaslin.  Internment was held at Pleasant Mound Cemetery.

CARROLL, James Greene
James Greene Carroll, son of William Henry Carroll and Mary Carroll was born near Nashville Tennessee on December 24, 1873 He passed away on February 26, 1949 at his home at the age of 75 years, two months and two days. When but a small child he came to Osceola Missouri with his father where he lived up to the time of his passing. His mother and father preceded him in death. He was united in marriage to Laura Ellen Waters November 25, 1894 at Osceola Missouri and to this union six children were born - Gilbert dying in infancy and Mary Frances at the age of six. He is survived by his companion, one daughter Agnes Sherman, Lowry City, Missouri, three sons, James William, Charles Harold and Ray Donald all of Osceola, Missouri, one sister, Sarah Hannah of Osceola, eleven grandchildren, three great grandchildren and many relations and friends. In 1909 he united with the Christian Church, to which faith he lived until death. Uncle Jim, as he was called by his many friends, was loved by all who knew him for his cheerful disposition and kind thoughts of others. All that loving hands and medical care could do was done but the Lord knows best, so he passed away in his sleep and has gone to rest - leaving a great voice in our memories and affections. Funeral services were held in the Church of the Brethren February 26, 1949. Buriel in Pleasant Mound Cemetery under the direction of Goodrich Funeral Home. The large crowd assembled and the large floral offering indicated the high esteem in which he was held.
At restOne more home has been saddened by the death of a dear and loving father who had lived a long and useful life being 75 years old.

CARROLL, Laura Ellen Waters
Laura Ellen Waters Carroll passed away January 25, 1970 in a nursing home in Urbana, Missouri at the age of 91 years old, nine months and 19 days. Laura Ellen Waters was born April 6, 1878 to James W. and Phoebe Ellen Waters near Clinton, Missouri. When she was a young child she moved with her mother to St. Clair County. near Faberville, Missouri near Monegaw Springs, Mo. In those days Monegaw was a popular resort. It was there that she became acquainted with the young man from Osceola area who was to become her husband. She was married to James Greene Carroll on November 25, 1894 at Osceola Missouri. They established their home on a farm near Osceola. Six children were born to this union. She was preceded in death by her husband and two children. Mrs. Carroll accepted Christ as her savior in 1909. She and her husband placed their memberships in the Osceola Christian Church. Later in years they attended the Brethren Church as it was closer to their home and their children could walk there.

CARROLL, Phoebe Ellen Saulmon Waters
Phoebe Ellen Saulmon Waters Carroll was born on August 15, 1847 in Poseyville, Ind. and passed away March 26, 1936 in Osceola, Missouri at the home of her daughter and her husband. On January 1, 1863 she married James Waters and to this union ten children were born. Five preceded her in death. Those living being Lizzie Mead or Oregon. J.H. Waters of Severy Kansas, Dan H. Waters of Faberville. Missouri, Liza Bledsoe of Lowry City, Missouri., and Laura Carroll of the home. Several years after the death of her first husband, who died April 9, 1881, she married W. H. Carroll on December 24, 1893. William H. Carroll died on January 1, 1930. At the age of seventeen she came to Missouri with her family and remained there until her death. At age seventeen she joined the Christian Church.

CARROLL, Ray Donald

Ray Donald Carroll was born July 8, 1920 in Osceola to James Green and Laura Ellen [Waters] Carroll. He passed away Oct. 1, 2008 at Shawnee Mission Medical Center, Overland Park, Kansas. He was a lifelong Osceola resident and a 1939 graduate of Osceola High school. Ray was a Navy Veteran of WWII, serving in theSouth Pacific on a PT boat. On Feb. 9, 1947 Ray was united in marriage to Paula Weis at the Osceola Church of the Brethren. After WWII Ray worked as a mechanic for Lewis and York Chevrolet. He later worked for Morrow Automotive and then had an Apco Station in Osceola and later a Skelly Station. Ray also worked as a custodian in the Osceola Post Office, Sac-Osage Hospital and later at the Osceola School System, retiring in 1982. He was a longtime member and deacon of the Osceola Church of the Brethren and a member of the Missouri Retired Teachers Association. Ray was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, Gilbert, in infancy, James and Harold "Doc" Carroll; two sisters, Agnes Sherman and Mary Carroll. He is survived by his wife Paula of the home, one daughter, Patricia S. Greife, Clinton, two sons, Donald Carroll and wife Donita, Osceola, Indiana, Dennis Carroll and wife Marilyn, Stillwater, Oklahoma.; 11 grandchildren; John Greife, Pamela Davis, Theresa Drury, Kathy Barnett [Charles], Sheila Tripp, Jennifer Wilson [Paul], David Carroll, [Amy}, Sarah Knorr [Michael], Rachel Horchler [Michael], Vicki Hubbard [Matthew] and Sheila Carroll. Also surviving are 18 great grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, othe relatives and many friends. Ray was a very loving husband, father and grandfather. He loved trips to town and to the coffeeshop. Ray loved his interaction with young people. He especially enjoyed working on cars and was very faithful to his church as a deacon, church treasurer and Sunday School superintendent. Services were held Saturday, Oct. 4 at Sheldon-Goodrich Chapel officiated by Rev. James Powers. Music selections included "In the Garden" and "Sheltered in the Arms of God" , Gail Ingle, soloist and Kathy Brown, pianist. Final disposition was cremation.
Arrangments were made by Sheldon-Goodrich Funeral Home, Osceola.

CARROLL, Roy Homer

Roy "Homer" Carroll, 81, passed away Aug. 15, 2006, at the home of his son and daughter-in-law in Pleasant Hill. Homer was born on March 25, 1925 to James and Grace Carroll in Osceola. He was inducted into the Navy in May 1943 and served on the USS Cleveland as a Seaman 2nd Class, being discharged in February 1946. He received the Victory Medal, American/Asiatic Pacific 4 Stars and the Phillipine Liberation 1 Star during his service. Upon returning to Osceola he married Marion Hutton and they moved to the Kansas City area where their children, Roy Allen and Rhonda Kay were born. Homer was later employed by IBEW Local Union #124 for 25 years, retiring in 1982. He married Carol Brown in 1984 and they lived on the lake in Edwards. They loved to fish, boat and spend time outside with their animals and watching the deer and turkeys that roamed the area. With their declining health, they returned to Kansas City to be close to their doctors. After a courageous baattle with cancer, Carol passed away in August 2005 and Homer, no longer able to live alone, moved to Pleasant Hill with is son and daughter-in-law where he could enjoy his last months enjoying nature again. Homer was preceded in death by his parents, Jim and Grace; three brothers, James, Glen and Gene and one sister, Mary Francis. He is survived by his children, Roy Allen and his wife, Terri, and Rhonda Mynatt; stepchildren, Diane Ditto, Barb Radcliff, Mike Brown, Chuck Brown and Kevin Brown; 12 grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; two sisters, Lena Rains, Clinton and Wanda Layher, Rockville and many other relatives and friends. Services for Homer were Saturday, Aug. 19, at the Sheldon-Goodrich Chapel, Osceola, with Richard Sunderwirth officiating. Musical choices were "Take Me Home Country Road" and "I Will Remember You". Casketbearers were Kevin Brown, Chuck Brown, Matt Carroll, Mike Brown, Jason Wickland and Gary Kauffman. Military honors by Clinton VFW Post #1894. Interment in the Pleasant Mound Cemetery under the direction of Sheldon-Goodrich Funeral Home, Osceola. In lieu of flowers the family would like to request donations be made to the Kansas City Hospice, in care of the funeral home.

Roy Homer Carroll, 81, of Pleasant Hill, Mo., formerly of Kansas City, passed away August 15, 2006. Mr. Carroll was a Navy veteran of World War II and was a 25-year employee of IBEW #124, retiring in 1982. He is survived by his son, Roy Allen Carroll and wife Terri; a daughter, Rhonda Mynatt; five stepchildren, Diane Ditto, Barb Radcliff, Mike Brown, Chuck Brown and Kevin Brown; two sisters, Lena Rains and Wanda Layher; 12 grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. Funeral services will be Saturday, August 19, at 2 p.m. at the SheldonGoodrich Chapel in Osceola, Mo. Burial with Military Honors will be in the Pleasant Mound Cemetery near Osceola. The family will receive friends from 1-2 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, family suggests donations to the Kansas City Hospice in care of the funeral home.

CARROLL, William Henry
William Henry Carroll was born July 28, 1842 near Elmira, New York departed this life Jan.15, 1930 at his home near Osceola Missouri. St. Clair County. He had been a great sufferer for two years but the last three weeks were almost beyond endurance but he bore his suffering patiently and often told ones who came to visit him he would try to be patient like Job of old. He was united with Mary Frances Ham in 1867. To this union four children were born. The mother and two sons passed on. James Greene Carroll and Sarah Hannah survive. in 1879 he was united in marriage with Nancy F. Jones. To this union one son was born, Ira Benjamin Carroll of Dillon Montana. In October 1893 the mother was taken to heaven and in later years he was again married to Phoebe Saulmon Waters who survives him. He leaves his aged companion three children, twelve grandchildren and several great grandchildren to mourn his passing.  He moved with his parents to Pennsylvania. where he grew to manhood then from there to Kingston Springs, Tennessee and in 1880 he moved his family to Missouri, St. Clair County. and located on his farm, where he died. Several years ago he united with the Latter Day Saints Church and died in that faith. He was a kind and loving father and neighbor and will greatly be missed. The funeral was conducted Friday afternoon at Pleasant Mound Church by I. J. Simmons after which his remains were laid to rest by the side of loved ones gone on before him. His six grandsons were his pall bearers. The flowers were very beautiful and appreciated by the family and they want to thank all who did any act of kindness and helped during the sickness and death of our father. Also for the services and the choir and we thank all who helped dig the grave and seeing it was filled. May God of peace comfort all sad hearts. Mr and Mrs George Hannah, Mr. and Mrs. James G. April 4, 1940 - July 24, 2008. Robert Boice Carson, son of Robert B. and Mary H. (House) Carson, was born April 4, 1940. He passed away July 24, 2008 at his home in Appleton City, Missouri at 68 years of age. Bob was born in Tulsa Oklahoma. He spent his childhood in Tulsa, Wichita, Kansas, and Appleton City. Bob served his country in the United States Navy. He lived in Tucson, Arizona and Kansas City and later retired in Appleton City. Bob was a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church in Appleton City. He made his living creating magnificent artwork throughout his life. Bob enjoyed boxing, history, and was a very colorful character touching many lives with his art and his own personality. Bob was a wonderful, colorful character. Most of us can only dream of the experiences he lived. He was a kind hearted animal lover. Bobs sense of humor never failed to brighten someone’s day. He was one of a kind; unique and original. We will be deeply missed, but never forgotten by all who had the privilege of knowing him. He was preceded in death by his mother. Survivors include: daughters Meredith Carson of San Diego, California, Leloie Carson of Tucson, Arizona; grandson Shawn Eric Jones and granddaughter Wendi Lee Jones both of Nevada, Missouri; great grandson Riddick Wyndell Shook of Nevada, Missouri; 12 cats and a dog of the home. CARTER, Jesse Marshall
Jesse Marshall Carter, son of Calvin and Sallie Carter, was born in Birchville, Kentucky, November 17, 1863, and passed away November 2, 1939, age 75 years, 11 months and 15 days. He came to Missouri with his father and three sisters at the age of 17 years. He made his home in Missouri for about 58 years. A short time he lived in Kansas. He was united in marriage to Effie D. Rippetoe, November 5, 1885. To this union were born thirteen children, as follows: Elmer, of Lone Elm, Kansas; Claude, of Kansas City, Missouri; Willie, of Marion, Kansas; Cleo F., deceased; Ernest, also deceased; Mrs. Ruther Shaver, of Ramondsville, Texas; Mrs. Lena Cole, Osceola, Missouri; Mrs. Bertha Spriggs, and Mrs. Della Spriggs, of Creston, Iowa; Mrs. Flora Nichols, deceased; Mrs. Jessie L. Lewellen, of Marshalltown, Iowa; Mrs. Ruby L. Brumfield, Kansas City, Missouri; Mrs. Susie Leota Glasgow, Kansas City, Missouri. Brother Carter professed hope in Christ in 1886, at a revival meeting conducted by the Rev. R.W. Hudson and Rev. Murphy, at the old Liberty Baptist church, near Iconium, Missouri. He united with the Methodist Protestant church, and later changed his membership to the M.E. church, and lived faithful to its vows until the end. The writer of this obituary knew Brother Carter more than 55 years. He was always kind to everyone and was universally loved by all. In the many times we were in his home during his illness, we never heard him complain. He bore his suffering with Christian fortitude. He lived the life of a good Christian, and we feel he has gone on to receive a good Christian's reward. He counted his friends by the number of his acquaintances. Funeral services were held Friday, November 4, at the Lowry City Methodist church, conducted by Rev. W. F. Hudson. Interment was made in the Osceola cemetery.

Obituary - John Cary was born in Iconium, Missouri in 1933 to Lee S. Cary and Mary Grace (Medlin) Cary. He graduated from Osceola High School and then entered the Air Force. He was a veteran of the Korean War.
He married Delores Wilson-Reese and had 4 children and 3 step-children. They lived in Independence, Missouri and he worked for Ford Motor Company. In 1987 he was united in marriage to Ruth Small. John retired in 1989 and they moved back home to Iconium, Missouri where he took care of the family farm, raising cattle and working in the hay fields. John always lent a helping hand to all his neighbors and friends. He was a great husband, father and a devout Christian. He was a member of the Masonic Blue Lodge and a member of the Warsaw Shrine Club. John was preceded in death by his parents Lee and Mary Grace Cary; his twin sister Jean Reese; 1 brother, William Cary; 1 daughter Susan K. Hall; 1 step-son, 2 grandsons Justin D. Hall and David R. Bukaty. John is survived by his wife, Ruth of the home; two daughters, Judy Bukaty and her husband Phil of Butler, Missouri. Rachel Cary of Lee’s Summit, Missouri and her friend Paulette Coble; a son Lee Cary and his fiancé Melissa Ligget-Gray of Blue Springs, Missouri; a brother, Robert Cary of Centerview, Missouri; 1 granddaughter, 3 great-grandchildren and 2 step-grandchildren along with other relatives and friends.

Linda Lou Casey was born Dec. 9, 1945 in Marian, Indiana to John and Mary [Stone] Niverson. She passed away March 8, 2009 at her home in Osceola. At ten years of age Linda moved, with her family, to California. In 1998 Linda moved to Osceola with her husband Harold Royan Casey. Harold preceded her in death on March 17, 2002. Linda is survived by her three children; John Dawson, Nicole Bell and Joseph Webb; her mother Mary Pellegrini; two sisters, Jennifer Stumph and Judy Winslow; one brother Bud Niverson and five grandchildren, several nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends. Services were Thursday, March 12 at 2 p.m. at Sheldon-Goodrich chapel. Minister was Rev. Fred Stevens. Music was "In the Garden", "Amazing Grace" and "Wind beneath My Wings". Interment was at Osceola Cemetery. Arrangements by Sheldon-Goodrich Funeral Home, Osceola.

Jann Barron Catt, the son of Harold and Catherine, brother of Heath, Jade, Reid and Corbin, was born on Sept. 13, 1988 in Springfield. He passed awaay on Jan. 9, 2009 in St. Clair County. Jann attended Lakeland Schools [K-8], Osceola High School and was currently a sophomore at Ozark Technical College. Jann was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents Bueford and Maxine Cheek and two maternal cousins. He is survived by his parents, brothers, sisters, paternal grandparents, Claude and Jessie Catt, numerous aunts, uncles, cousinss and many friends. A Memorial Mass was held on Jan. 12 at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church of Montrose with a private family reception following the Mass. The minister was Father John Bolderson. Casketbearers were Heath Catt, Jade Catt, Reid Catt, Corbin Catt, Caleb Maberry and Drew Lacey; honorary casketbearers were each and every one of his friends. His final disposition was cremation.

CAUTHON, Eliza Ann Burrress

In Memoriam - The Angel of Death has again visited this community and taken from our home our dear mother, who we all loved so well. Eliza Ann Burress, daughter of Zacriah and Nellie Burress, was born in Union County, Kentucky, April 17, 1830, professed religion at the age of fifteen, joined the Baptist church and remained true and faithful until her Savior called her home. She was married to James Cauthon March 18, 1847. To this union was born 13 children; 9 sons and 4 daughters. The father, two sons and one daughter have gone on to prepare a place for mother. She had been a widow for twenty years, and had made her home with her children. Two years ago she went to the home of her son, J.R. Cauthon, who resides on the old home place, to make her home the rest of her days. Mother was an invalid for twenty-two months, and fell a victim to cancer, which ended her days. She passed away October 6, 1919, and was laid to rest in the King’s Prairie cemetery, the funeral service being conducted by Rev. G.W. Wyatt. She leaves seven sons and three daughters, besides a host of relatives, to mourn her loss. “She is gone, but not forgotten, - To a home where angels dwell.- We will meet her up in Heaven, - Where we’ll never say farewell. - It is lonely now among us - And our hearts are often sad - But we long to meet you dear Mother - In a home that’s bright and glad. - We know you’ve gone before us - And we long to meet you there - In a land that’s full of gladness - In a home that’s bright and fair. - We know you’re walking yonder - On that bright and golden street - So we say good-bye, God keep you -‘Til the time when we shall meet. - We can see the gateway open -And the angels let you in - To a land we all will work for - To a home we hope to win. - Our hearts are full of longing - And our hearts are sad and sore - But we hope to meet you dear Mother, - On that bright and golden shore.”-- The Children.

CAUTHON, James

The many friends of James Cauthon of Dallas Township will be grieved to learn of his death, which occurred at his home near Catherine on Tuesday on last week, his disease being asthma. Mr. Cauthon was a native of Tennessee, having been born in that state in 1823. He moved to Missouri and St. Clair County in 1845. Two years later he was married to Miss Elizabeth Burress. He became a member of the Baptist church at the age of 18 and at the time of his death held his membership with the King's Prairie Church. The remains were interred on Wednesday at the churchyard. Rev. Wm. M. Love of Osceola being in charge of the services.Deceased leaves a beloved wife and eleven children, all grown.

Mary Beth (Elizabeth) Cauthon, age 71, of Weableau, peacefully made the transition from this life to the next of Tuesday, May 15, 2001 at her farm home with her husband, George, by her side. Born May 3, 1930, Mary Beth was the fourth and youngest child of Harvey John and Mary Anna Squire Todd. She attended grade school at King’ Prairie and graduated from Osceola High School in 1948. During her senior year in high school, she became engaged to George after he proposed to her on the school bus. On June 4, 1949, at Osceola Baptist Church, with Rev. Albert Gastin officiating, Mary Beth was united in marriage to George. In 1999, Mary Beth and George celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with a reception at Gerster Baptist Church. Mary Beth was the mother of three children, David, Bernita, and Sharon Cauthon. After living and working for several years in and around the Kansas City area, Mary Beth and George returned to St. Clair County and made their home on George’s home place on King’s Prairie. Before retiring in 1998, Mary Beth worked at Cattleman’s Auction Company and the St. Clair County Recorder of Deeds office. In retirement, Mary Beth and George enjoyed attending Blue Grass festivals all over Missouri and Arkansas. Mary Beth was a member of Gerster Baptist Church. A friend to all, to know Mary Beth was to share her love of music, gardening, reading, genealogy, and quilting. Mary Beth was preceded in death by her parents, Harvey J. and Mary A. Todd, and her brother Ernest Todd. Survivors include her husband, George J. Cauthon of the home; son David Cauthon, Arlington, Va.; daughters, Bernita Cauthon of Kansas City, Sharon J. Cauthon of Blue Springs; sisters, Lettie Mae Thurman and her husband, James of Kansas City, Ester Dureka and her husband Paul of Raytown; nephews, nieces, neighbors, and a host of friends. Mary Beth had a desire to live and see the year 2000 stating many times “how wonderful that would be to live to see the start of a new millennium.” Mary Beth gave her children, whom she saw grown into responsible, caring adults, roots for a foundation and wings to sour to achieve their dreams. She and George were proud that all three children attended and graduated from college. Mary Beth is now at peace. As the songs says, “There’ll be no sorrow there, no more burdens to bear, no sickness, no pain, no more parting over there and forever I will be with the one who died for me, what a day, glorious day that will be.” Last Tuesday, Mary Beth answered the call and “when the roll was called up yonder” she was there. She will be missed. Services for Mary Beth were held Saturday, May 19 at Gerster Baptist Church with Rev. Tom Sharp and Rev. Francis Leslie, officiating. Music was “How Great Thou Art,” and “When the Roll is Called UP Yonder” by Gerster Baptist Church Choir. Casketbearers were Calvin Broom, Dude Vaughn, Johnny Hammond, Walter Hammond, Zane Hammond, and Jimmy Estes. Interment was in King’s Prairie Cemetery under the direction on Sheldon-Goodrich Funeral Home, Osceola.

CAUTHON, Orval Warren

Orval Warren Cauthon, the eldest child of the late Fred and Lula Baumgarden Cauthon, was born May 9, 1916 and departed this life Oct. 13, 2006 in Bakersfield, Calif. Orval was born in the St. Clair County area known as Kings Prairie and received his early education at Kings Prairie School. He went on to graduate from the Weaubleau High School in 1933. After high school Orval enrolled in a summer school program at Southwest Baptist College in Bolivar. This certified him to teach in the rural schools in St. Clair County. Among other schools, Orval taught at the Kings Prairie School and the Oak Grove School. It was while attending Southwest Baptist College that Orval met his beautiful wife, also a teacher, Caroline Kindal of Lamar and both of them taught in the Barton County School District. While waiting to be drafted into the army Orval spent several months in the Kansas City working for Safeway Groceries. After being drafted he served in Texas. Upon being released from the army in 1944 and completing his Masters Degree, he accepted a teaching position at Orangewood Elementary School in Bakersfield, Calif. For 35 years he served as teacher, principal, then as superintendent in the Edison School District. Orval retired in 1983. Orval was actively involved in his community. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, being the head usher for almost 40 years. He was a member of Lions Club, Association of California School Administrators, CRTA and North Bakersfield Parks and Recreation. He held many office positions in these organizations. Orval enjoyed visiting family in Missouri and often attended the annual Cauthon reunions. Orval was preceded in death by his wife, Caroline; two siblings, Ervin and Veda. He is survived by his son, Charles "Chuck" Cauthon and his wife, Liz; two grandchildren, Misty Barron and Dustin Cauthon both of Arkansas; two brothers and four sisters, Richard Cauthon, George Cauthon, Vera Estes, Sarah Howerton, Jaunita Howe, Grace Bausch, many nieces, nephews and cousins and a host of friends. Funeral services were held Oct. 18 at Hillcrest Memorial Park, Bakersfield, Calif.

Paul Lavern Cauthon, the son of Richard Cauthon and Helen (Anderson) Cauthon Paur, was born on October 18, 1956 in Kansas City, Missouri. He passed away at his home in Appleton City, Missouri on July 16, 2009 at the age of 52 years, 8 months and 29 days. Paul graduated from Lowry City High School in 1974. He enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in 1975. He spent a year and a half in the Philippines and was honorably discharged as a Corporal in 1979 from Camp Pendleton, California. He was united in marriage to Sharon Witherspoon in June 1986 in Clinton Missouri. To this union two children (twins) were born in 1988, Matthew Jared and Holly Leann. Paul was a member of the First Baptist Church in Appleton City. He was a charter member of the Elks Lodge in Butler. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, motorcycles and car racing. His dream was to someday own a Harley Ultra Classic Electra Glide trike and travel. Spending time with his family was a priority, especially attending the Cauthon family reunion. Also, another enjoyment of his was spending time with his classmates from the graduating class of 1974. The past few years he really enjoyed spending time with his children and afternoon outings with his mother and niece, Madison. He and Holly had just returned from a trip to Yuma, Arizona to visit Matthew, which he enjoyed greatly. Preceding Paul in death were his grandparents Fred and Lula (Bumgardener) Cauthon and Clarence and Christine (Regan) Anderson; his wife Sharon; three uncles, Clarence Anderson, Orval Cauthon and Ervin Cauthon; an aunt Veda Glaser; and a nephew Tony Rife. Mela Mae Cecil, 80, Foster, died Sunday, May 27, 2007, at Willow Lane Nursing Center in Butler. She was born Aug. 10, 1926 to Davie George and Beulah Mullins Dotson in Osceola. Mae was one of seven children. In 1946 she married Edward Ballard and had one son, Eddie Ballard. On Jan. 16, 1956, she married William "Billy" Cecil and had anohter son, Rodger James Cecil. She raised two grandchildren, Angela Ballard Swarnes and Charles Edward Ballard. Along with being a housewife, she was a loving mother and grandmother. Mae lived with and was taken care of by Angela and her family for the last three years of her life. She enjoyed fishing, camping, canning tomatoes and teaching children to tap dance and watching them perform at local fairs and nursing homes. Mae was baptized at the Ohio Street United Methodist Church in 1938. Mae is survived by two sons, Ed Ballard and his wife, C.J., Amsterdam and Rodger Cecil and companion, Brenda, Foster; two grandchildren, Angela Swarnes and her husband, Jimmie, Rich Hill and Chuck Ballard, Deltona, Fla.; six great grandchildren, William "Goob" Swarnes, Samantha Swarnes, Jennifer Swarnes, Shelby Ballard, Kyla Ballard and J.R. Carroll; special daughters, Patty Thomas, Butler and Sue Holsinger, Rich Hill; and many nephews and nieces. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Billy in 1999; three brothers; three sisters; and granddaughter, Lucy Ballard. Mary Elizabeth Chamberlain was born April 13, 1938 at home in Shelby county, Indiana to Clarence and Gladys (Rouse) Weaver. She left this life July 2, 2007 at her home with her family by her side; taken away by pancreatic cancer. She married the love of her life, Ralph Chamberlain August 3, 1970 in Miami, Oklahoma.
Mary held various jobs through her life from general store clerk, health care provider and meter reader. She was not only a homemaker. She was a home builder. There was not a task Mary couldn't do from electrical, tiling, to roofing. She was a master carpenter. There wasn't a task that Mary wouldn't tackle and it was always doen for pennies on the dollar. Mary was stronger than most men with the energy of a toddler. Her joy for gardening and landscaping was unsurpassable. All were sure to be amazed by her creativity. Mary took great pride in sharing her wealth of knowledge with all who knew her and there could never be found a better friend. Mary was preceded in death by her mother and father, one brother, Bradford Weaver, son, David Dyer, stepson, Wayne Chamberlain. Ralph Duwayne "Wayne" Chamberlain, age 51, lost his battle with cancer on Sept. 29, 2006, at his home in Independence. He was born the second child of Ralph and Katherine Chamberlain on Jan. 29, 1955 at Butler.
Wayne was an automobile painter and had worked at AAA Auto for 11 years and for KC Car paint for 25 years. He loved what he did and even after having a major surgery and during chemotherapy for cancer went back to work after only two weeks out of the hospital on limited hours. He worked until the business shut down and by then he was too ill to work. He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Aaron and Eva Chamberlain and his maternal grandparents, Eugene and Mable Nestlerode, his step brother David Dyer, also many aunts and uncles. He is survived by his wife, Rena, daughter, Cheryl and step daughter Katy all of Kansas City, his father and step moteher, Ralph and Mary Chamberlain of Lowry City, his mother Katherine Stone of Urbana, sister Kathy and her husband Jim Crum and their family from Sedalia, sister Helen and her husband Gary Fowler and their family of Preston, half brothers, Jimi Hedrick and his family of Buffalo, Rocky Stone and his wife Leola and their family of Urbana, step brothers Dwight Dyer and his wife Merna and their family of Chariton, Iowa, Darrell Dyer of Honolulu, Hawaii, and step sister Debby and her husband Todd Conn and their family of Loveland, Colo. and many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins. There was a viewing and family service at Mt. Washington Forever Funeral Home in Independence on Oct. 6 followed by cremation. There will be a celebration to his life held at the home of his father, Ralph Chamberlain, at Lowry City on Oct. 14 at 2 p.m. Freinds and family are invited.

Frank F. Chambers was born April 1, 1914, in Perryton, Texas to Frank and Mary Norwood Chambers, and died Tuesday, December 18, 2001 at Golden Valley Hospital in Clinton. Funeral services were Friday, December 21, at Sheldon-Goodrich Chapel, Osceola. Burial was in Roscoe Cemetery. He married Estelle Lillian Arner in Provo, Utah, on October 21, 1943. The family moved to Oregon in 1950 where he worked in the logging industry and farmed. The family moved to Osceola in 1962. He farmed and he and his wife also ran the Osceola Sale Barn Cafe. In the late '60s he opened an appliance and repair business in which he worked until retirement. He was preceded in death by his wife, Estelle; his parents; brothers, Harv, Steve and Noel, and sisters, Laura, Myrtle and Eva Mae. He is survived by his son, Ross and wife, Brenda; three grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; three brothers, Dan, Sam and Key, and one sister, Melva.

Pearl A. Champ - Funeral services for Pearl A. Champ were held Saturday, March 13 at 2:00 p.m. at the Goodrich Funeral Chapel with Rev. D.R. Boudreau as the officiating minister. Music was furnished by Yvonne Purdy as soloist and Glen Finney as accompanist. Casketbearers were Robert McLarry, Pete Waite, Donnie Merchant, Roland Lamb, Bud Forbes and George Forbes. Burial was in Osceola Cemetery. Pearl Asbury Champ, son of William Paris and Margaret Coedelia Champ was born on June 16, 1895 in Kokomo, Indiana and passed away March 10, 1976. He served in the United States Army in World War I, having enlisted in 1915. He later served with the 11th Company Coast Guard Artillery Corps and was honorably discharged with the rank of Sergeant. After his discharge he moved to Osawatomie, Kansas where he was married to Flora Rebecca Boolin on May 9, 1922. The couple had six children. He later moved to the Vista-Collins area where he farmed for 40 years. He was preceded in death by his wife, Flora Rebecca, a daughter, Margaret Elizabeth, and a son, William Wesley. Surviving are a son, Charles, three daughter, Loretta J. Jarrell, Anna Belle Dimitroff and Mary Piotrowski, all of Kansas City and six great-grandchildren.

Lucy May Chaney, 91, Nevada, passed away Monday, March 26, 2007 at Barone Alzheimer's Care Center, Nevada. She was born Nov. 24, 1915 in St. Clair County to Richard Hezikiah Cross and Cora Zenobia Garrison Chaney. When a young woman she married David F. Stump and to this uion five children were born. She later married George W. Chaney and to this union one daughter was born. Lucy spent her early childhood in St. Clair County. At an early age Lucy professed her faith in Christ as Savior and joined Bear Creek Methodist Church. Lucy resided in and around Clinton for a number of years. She worked at Economy Market in Clinton for Mae Dodson. In 1963 she moved to Nevada where she was employed by Cecil and Maxine Maxwell's Grocery Store. Lucy and Maxine spent many hours antiquing. After retiring from Maxwell's Grocery, Lucy was a child care  provider for many years. Survivors include four daughters, Naida Wilson and her husband, Bob of Clinton; Barbara Campbell and her husband, Everett of Deepwater; Kathleen Shanks and her husband Derrel of Clinton and Marilyn Chaney of Nevada; 19 grandchildren, Dale Stump, David Stump, Elaine Beaushaw, Dennis Stump, Betty James, Stanley Wilson, Teresa Schussler, Roger Wilson, Randall Stump, Michelle Stump, Mason Stump, Allison Stump, Steve Scott, Diana Breeden, Cheryl Carter, Julie Stoltman, Susan Shanks, Telly Leer and Lucy Leer; one brother, Clifford Cross, Independence; 36 great-grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren; four sisters, Ada Preston, Kansas City, Kan.; Phyrne Enderle of Riverside; Edna Fincher of Marlo, Okla. and Eva Krie, Anaheim, Calif. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, George W. Chaney; sons, Edward E. Murl Stump and Marion Richard Stump; infant great-granddaughter, Darlene Elaine Hibbs; brothers, Floyd Cross, Durward Cross, Jack Cross, Murl Cross, Tom Cross and sister, Lelah Hines. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, March 29 at Ferry Funeral Home, Nevada with Dr. Steve Scott officiating. Interment will follow in Newton Burial Park in Nevada. Friends may call now and until the time of service at Ferry Funeral Home in Nevada. The family suggests that memorials may be made in her honor to the Barone Alzheimer's Care Center in care of the funeral home.

DIES AT ADVANCED AGE - W. W. Chapel, for more than forty years a respected and well-known resident of Appleton City, passed away Saturday, May 27, 1922, after a long illness from paralysis and other complications. For several months he had made his home with Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Overturf, who gave him every care and attention throughout his long illness. William W. Chapel, attorney at law and notary public, was a native of Chenengo County, New York, and was born September 1, 1839, thus being 82 years, 6 months and 26 days of age at his death. He was reared in the county of his birth and educated at the academy of Cincinnatus, New York. In 1859 he attended a term of the law school of Albany, New York, and, in September, 1861, he enlisted in the Union Army, in Co. C 157th N. Y. Vol. Reg., remaining in the service until mustered out at Charleston, South Carolina, July 10, 1865. Returning home, he was engaged in farming until November, 1867, when he moved to Hamilton, Caldwell county, Mo. and embarked in the real estate business and the practice of law, being admitted to the bar of that county in February 1868. In March, 1882, he came to Appleton City, since which time, until a year or so ago, he had successfully followed his profession. Mr. Chapel was married to Miss Alice G. Pritchard, a native of New York, December 13, 1865. Four children were born of this union. Minnie, Mary, William and Frank, the last named who resides at Big Piney, Wyo., and who arrived here shortly after his father's death, being the only survivor. Mr. Chapel was again married March 4, 1875, to Miss Alice Penny, of Missouri. For many years the deceased had been a member of the local G. A. R. Post, serving as Post Commander and Post Adjutant at several times. He was also a respected member of the Appleton City Lodge, No. 366, I. O. O. F. He occupied the position of Mayor of Appleton City one term, and served as Police Judge a number of years. Funeral services were conducted at the grave, Sunday morning, May 28, at 10 o'clock, under the auspices of the G. A. R. and Odd Fellows lodge. Interment was made in the city cemetery.

CHAPMAN, Ruth Naomi Hooper
Ruth Naomi Chapman, 85, Lowry City, passed away Tuesday, January 28, 2003 in North Kansas City Hospital, after a lengthy illness. She was born February 18, 1917, the daughter of Nancy and Jess Hooper.
On December 26, 1939 she married Jim Chapman. She was an active member of the First Baptist Church, Lowry City. Ruth was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 38 years; her oldest daughter Kay Chapman Keeling; a stepson, Junior Chapman; a great-grandson Michael Arnote; a brother, Floyd Hooper and a sister Edna Hooper Jacobs. Survivors include her daughters Sue Chapman Leiber and her husband Bucky, Osceola; Maudie Chapman Higgins and her husband Don, Independence; her son B.J. Chapman and wife Brenda, Ozark; step-son Buck Chapman and wife Mary, Lowry City; and son-in-law Russell Keeling and wife Anna, Lowry City. She also leaves behind 16 grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren, a host of great-great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Ruth was better known as "Munner" to her grandchildren and great grandchildren, adn will leave a void in the lives of many. Services were held Friday, January 31 at 2 p.m. at the First Baptist Church of Lowry City under the direction of Sheldon Goodrich Funeral Home. Rev. Jeff Ferguson officiated the services. Music selections, "It Is Well With My Soul" provided by Tom Forman; "When The Roll Is Called Up Yonder" and "Victory In Jesus" performed by the congregation. Casketbearers were Rodney Leiber, Caleb Chapman, Adrian Chapman, Sage Arnote, Chris Higgins and Michael Byard. Interment was held at the Landaker Cemetery.

David Eugene Chiles, 50, passed away Saturday, March 25, 2006, at K.U. Medical Center in Kansas City, Kan. He was born on July 1, 1955, in Warsaw to Clifford William and Evelyn Deloris Cline Chiles. David married the love of his life, Kristine Annette Hutchings, on Aug. 28, 1976, and to this union, two sons were born. David was preceded in death by his father, Clifford Chiles, an infant brother, Clifford William Chiles, Jr., his maternal grandparents, Frank and Kathryn Cline and paternal grandparents, William and Blanch Chiles.
He is survived by his wife, Kris; his sons, Chad Everett Chiles and his wife Brandy, his son Matthew Keane Chiles and Adriann Abby Nicole Chiles; his mother, Evelyn Chiles; his brother, Bill Chiles and his wife Katrina; his sister, Sandra Cox and her husband, David McClenden; three nephews; two nieces; five great nephews; four great nieces; several aunts, uncles, cousins, and many many friends. Memorial services were held Saturday, April 1, at 2 p.m. at the Sheldon-Goodrich Chapel. The Rev. was Sam Masten. The music was "The Power of Love", "Take It To The Limit", "Simple Man", and "I've Gotta Get A Message To You". The final disposition was cremation. Arrangements were by Sheldon-Goodrich Funeral Home, Osceola.

Florenia Carmona Chiles, age 63, Joplin, passed away at 3:20 a.m. Monday, Feb. 12, 2007, at St. John’s
Regional Medical Center. She was born Feb. 15, 1943, in Tabacco Albay, Philippines, to the late Maria Buena Carmona and Balbino Carmona. She lived in Fair Grove, Mo., from 1969 until moving to Joplin with her husband in 1986. She was a homemaker and loved to entertain people. She was a former member of Peace Chapel in Fair Grove and attended House of David in Fairland, Okla. She was a member of Faith Assembly of God, Joplin. She married Ron L. Chiles on Sept. 4, 1966, in Angeles City, Philippines. He survives at the home.
Additional survivors include a daughter, Janet Hoskins, Joplin; two sons, Rod Chiles, Granby, Mo., and Tim Chiles, Joplin; brothers, Armando Carmona, Sardo Carmona, Ernesto Carmona, Radin Carmona and
Arnel Carmona; sister, Velma Chambers, of Destin, Fla.; and grandchildren, Ronnie Hoskins, Amber
Hoskins, Rachel Farrales, Caleb Farrales, Ranon Chiles, Zane Chiles, Taylor Chiles, Zion Chiles and

Hallie Chiles was born August 11, 1903 to Richard Lee and Katherine Howard Inskeep. She passed away January 11, 1992 at the Warsaw Health Care Center in Warsaw. Hallie was born near Lowry City and was a long time Lowry City area resident. She was a member of the Kidds Chapel Church in rural Lowry City.
Hallie was united in marriage to Rolla Chiles who preceded her in death in 1969. She is also preceded in death by her parents and one son, Kenneth. She is survived by two sons, Ronald Chiles of Joplin and Jerry Chiles of Edwards; one daughter, Mrs. LaVerne Heins of Kansas City; one sister, Mrs. Nina Shoemaker of Branson; 15 grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; four great great grandchildren; other relatives and friends. Funeral services were held Tuesday, January 14, 1992, at 1 pm at the Sheldon-Goodrich chapel with Rev. Doug Gripka officiating. Music was provided Rev. Doug Gripka, vocalist and Mrs. Irene Hartley, accompanist. Casket bearers were Wayne Chiles, Jerold Chiles, Roddy Chiles, Bob Ginert, Danny Youngberg, Timothy Chiles, and Rodney Quinn. Interment was in the Kidds Chapel Cemetery under the direction of Sheldon Goodrich Funeral Home, Osceola.

Kristine Annette Chiles, 49, passed away April 28, 2006, at Kansas University Medical Center in Kansas City, Kan. She was born Feb. 8, 1957, in Red Oak, Iowa, to Lovetta Jane Manley McClendon and Everett Lionel Hutchings. On Aug. 28, 1976, Kris was united in marriage to David Eugene Chiles and to this union two sons were born, Chad Everett Chiles and Matthew Keane Chiles. Kris was preceded in death by her older brohter, Kenneth Wayne Hutchings; her father, Everett Hutchings; her stepfather, John McClendon; her father-in-law, Clifford Chiles and on March 25, her husband, David. Survivors include her sons, Chad Chiles and his wife, Brandy, and Matthew Chiles; Adriann Chiles; her precious grandchildren, Haley Aurora, Jaden Matthew and Abby Nicole Chiles; her mother, Lovetta McClendon; her brother, Kevin Dewayne Hutchings and his wife, Amy; her stepsisters, Karen Jackson and her husband, Earl, Debi Swetham and her husband, Bill; her stepmother, Mabel McCurin; her mother-in-law, Evelyn Chiles; her brother-in-law, Bill Chiles and his wife, Katrina; her sister-in-law, Sandra Cox and her husband, David; her five nephews; four nieces; six great nephews; five great nieces; her aunts; uncles; several cousins and many friends. Services for Kris were May 6 in the Sheldon-Goodrich Chapel with Pastor Mike Jenkins officiating. Musical selections were "The Rose", "Wind Beneath My Wings", "Tears In Heaven", and "Hey Jude". Rolla Chiles Services Feb. 17 - Funeral services were held Feb. 17, at the Goodrich Funeral Chapel for Rolla Oliver Chiles, who died Feb. 13 at his home near Chalk Level at the age of 72. Rev. Dorsey Levell, D.D. of Springfield officiated at the services and burial was made in Kidd's Chapel cemetery. Pallbearers were: Clifford Chiles, Billy Chiles, Robert Ginter, Bill Nichols, Jerry Nichols and Lecil Inskeep. Mr. Chiles, son of Henry and Olive Chiles, was born March 14, 1895, in the Ohio community. He grew to manhood in the community where he was born. He attended Hillsdale grammar school, Lowry high school and State 'Teachers' college at Warrensburg. On Aug. 1, 1918, he was married to Hallie Inskeep. Five children were born to the couple. A daughter Connie Mae, died in infancy. He lived most of his life in St. Clair county, except for about 15 years when he lived at Klamath Falls, Oregon, and Oakland, CA. At the age of 18 he was converted and joined Pleasant Valley Baptist church. While he lived in Oregon, he joined the Klamath Temple church, where he served as deacon. Upon his return to Missouri, he joined Kidd's Chapel church near his home. Survivors are his wife; four children, LaVerne Heins, Kansas City, Mo., Kenneth Chiles, Springfield, Mo., Ronald Chiles, Bangkok, Thailand, and Jerald Chiles, Kansas City, MO.; nine grandchildren; four great grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Nellie Wulfemeyer and Mrs. Iva Moser and a brother, Bert Chiles. Eight brothers and sisters preceded him in death.

He also worked at Mid-Con for five years and Ace-Electric as an electrical engineer for 16 years. Ron retired in 2000, due to ill health. He was a member of Faith Assembly of God. He also attended the House of David, Fairland, Oklahoma, and was a past member of Fair Grove Methodist Church. He married Florenia Carmona on September 4, 1966 in Angeles City, Philippines. She preceded him in death on February 12, 2007. Survivors include his children, Janet Hoskins, Joplin, Rod Chiles, Granby, Tim Chiles, Joplin; one brother, Jerry Chiles, Harrisonville, Missouri, Laverne Heins, Kansas City, Missouri; and nine grandchildren, Ronnie Hoskins, Amber Hoskins, Rachel Farrales, Caleb Farrales, Ranon Chiles, Zane Chiles, Taylor Chiles, Zion Chiles, and Zeke Chiles. Services will be Thursday at 10:00 a.m. at Faith Assembly of God. Graveside services will be Thursday at 3:00 p.m. at Kidds Chapel Cemetery, in Lowry City, Missouri. CHINN, David

Death of David Chinn - Another pioneer of St. Clair County has gone, in which David Chinn, after a lingering illness of several months, died at his home in Lowry City, October 15, 1903. He was born in Kentucky, March 9, 1828, hence he was 75 years of age. He emigrated from his native state while quite a young man, with his father, Dr. Chinn, locating at Lexington, MO, and in 1849, while in the vigor of his young manhood, he went to California, making the trip overland. It was a delight in his old age to relate the many thrilling incidents of his long journey and to speak of the privations while en route to the primitive gold fields. After remaining in California several years, he returned to his home and in 1855 married Martha Short, who with three sons and three daughters, survive him. At the beginning of the Civil War, he enlisted in the Confederate Army under Gen. Joe Shelby and participated in a number of the hardest fought battles of the war. Uncle Dave, as he was familiarly known, will be greatly missed and his aged and tottering form will now be seen in memory by his many friends, who can correctly say that to know him was to appreciate his many noble traits of character. The funeral services were held at the family residence, conducted by Rev. VanderLippi, followed by interment of the remains in the Short Cemetery, attended by a vast number of old friends.

DEATHS – David Chinn. "Another pioneer has passed away." With what startling regularity during the past few years has this paper been called upon to notice the passing away of those who came to the county with the advancing host of civilization and helped to make a county and a state, where only forests and prairies greeted the eye and wild animals sounded a note of welcome. The last to go was David Chinn, who died at his home in Lowry City on Thursday last, after an illness lasting several months. Mr. Chinn was born in Lexington, KY, on March 9, 1828, and came to this county when about 25 years of age. Prior to the Civil War, together with Langhorn Dade and Richard Devin, he was engaged in the publication of the Osceola Independent, a newspaper that flourished, until Jim Lane laid waste the town and scattered its inhabitants to the four winds of the earth. Since the war, he has been engaged in many occupations - miner, merchant, farmer and hotel keeper, but it is in the latter that he will be best remembered - friend in good report and evil report. Not having been impregnated with the commercial spirit that teaches that the chief end of man is to accumulate the things of this world, he belonged in that class of old school gentlemen that are well high extinct. Quiet and unassuming in his demeanor, he was a deep thinker, and having once settled upon an opinion, he was firm and unshakable in his conviction of right. Like all the old time printers, he was careless of the morrow, but he was ever ready to render a favor without hope of remembrance or reward. His remains were interred in the Barnett Cemetery. The Rev. Mr. VanderLippi conducting the obsequies. He leaves a wife and several children to mourn the taking away of a loving husband and doting father. Farewell old friend, farewell until the last "string" has been measured and "cashed in" and the last edition has been sent to press. May angels keep silent vigil until "80" has been called and the "forms" have been locked for us all. Some day we say, and turn our eyes toward the bright hills of Paradise; Some day, some time, a sweet new rest shall blossom flower-like in each breast, Some day, some time, our eyes shall see the faces kept in memory; Some day their hand shall clasp our hand, Just over in the morning land.
So wait, my friend, tho' years move slow, That happy time will come, we know.

Clapp, Rev. Joseph- Rev. Joseph Clapp died at his home, five miles west of Passaic, Saturday, August 4, 1917, aged 75 years. Mr. Clapp was born in Moultrie county, Ill., and came to Missouri about twenty five years ago, locating near Appleton City, about fifteen years ago he bought the farm where he died of Chas. Lee. For years he had been a minister in the Primitive Baptist church. Funeral services were held from the home Sunday morning and the body taken to Appleton City for burial.

Lowry City Resident Dies - Funeral services were held Sunday, April 13, at two o'clock in the Goodrich chapel for Albert Clark, 66, a resident of Lowry City for six years. Rev. Amos Jackson officiated at the service. Burial was made Monday in McLouth cemetery at McLouth, Kas. Survivors are his wife, Fannie of the home, and two sisters.

Mrs. A. C. Clark Dies - Memorial Day was an especially sad one this year for the relatives and friends of Mrs. Elva Cross Clark of Lowry City. Mrs. Clark had been seriously ill for the past two months. Her death which came at 12:30 Sunday was due to cancer. Funeral services were conducted in Lowry City Tuesday afternoon by Elder Hugh Speary of Clinton. Burial was held in the Cross family row at the Chiles graveyard near Harper.

Burial will be made in McLouth Cemetery, McLouth, Kas., under the direction of Goodrich Funeral Home. Among her survivors is her sister, Mrs. Bernard C. Ruthy, Lake Geneva, Wis.

Funeral services will be at the Sickman & Dunning Chapel, Friday, July 31. Burial will be in Smith Bend Cemetery.

Jerry W. Clark was born November 29, 1936 in Holden, to Wilbur L. and Ethel Wade Clark. He passed away at home on April 26, 2007 in Osceola, Missouri. Jerry moved to Kansas City, Kan., at the age of five with his family. He graduated from Wyandotte High School, Kansas City, Kan., in 1955. After graduation Jerry joined the U.S. Navy and served two tours of duty. Jerry married Linda Felix in June 1965. They later divorced. To this union one son, Brian Clark was born. Jerry was briefly married to Martha Bradenberg. Jerry then married Marilyn Pauline Findley. The marriage ended with her death in 1993. Jerry worked for General Motors for 30 years retiring in 1995 and moved to Osceola a year later. Jerry was an avid hunter and fisherman. Jerry was also preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his son, Brian and his wife, Michelle, two grandsons, Nathan and Jeremy Clark, one brother Jack Clark and his wife, Mary Ellen of Kansas City, Kan., three sisters, June Trumble and her husband, Charles, Shawnee, Kan., Jane Lynn and her husband, Dean, Kansas City, Kan., Judy Parton and her husband, Don, Gladstone, and a dear friend, Marie Carver, Kansas City, Kan., other relatives and many friends. Funeral services were held Tuesday, May 1 at Sheldon-Goodrich Chapel. Officiation by Greg Mangum. Music selection was, "Amazing Grace" and "Go Rest High On That Mountain". Honorary casketbearers were Jerry Gardner, David Caven, Cody Peery, Drarel Caven, Buford Kilgore and Dale Roeder.
Military services by the Alpha Team. Interment was in the Mound Grove Cemetery in Independence. Arrangements were made by Sheldon-Goodrich Funeral Home, Osceola.

Margaret Marie Elliott Clark, 80, Belton, died Sunday, December 18, 1994, at Research Medical Center there. Graveside services will be held Friday at the Smith Bend Cemetery, rural Osceola. Mrs. Clark was the daughter of Joseph Henry and Lidda Jane Burkhart Elliott, and was born in Vista. She is survived by her husband, Marvin Clark. of the home; sons, David Clark of Las Cruces, New Mexico, and Delbert Clark of Lee's Summit; two daughters, Linda Ruch of Las Cruces and Joyce Carter of Jasper, Mo.; four grandchildren and two great-grandsons. Mrs. Clark had lived in the Smith Bend area before moving to Belton 34 years ago. She was a seamstress for the Grace Company, which made children's clothing, for 28 years. She was a Christian.

CLARK, Marvin Monroe

Marvin Monroe Clark, 85, Belton, died Wednesday, February 28, 1996. Graveside services will be held Sunday, March 3, at Smith Bend Cemetery, near Mt. Zion. Mr. Clark was born July 9, 1910, in St. Clair County, near Iconium. He was a farmer and carpenter. He moved at age 37 from his home place in the hills of Missouri to a Clinton area farm until 1957 when he went to work for J. W. Batson and traveled throughout the west, working as a carpenter. He retired in Belton but continued to keep his roots in his beloved home place where he as born and lived those 37 years. He loved to hunt and fish and tell funny little stories. His motto was always "Laughter is the best medicine." He will always be missed by his sons, David Marvin Clark, Los Cruces, New Mexico, and Delbert E. Clark, Lee's Summit; daughters, Joyce Arlene Carter, Jasper, and Linda Margaret Ruch, Los Cruces, New Mexico; daughters-in-law, Judy and Lois Clark; six grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and a host of friends.

Richard James Clark was born September 19, 1942, in Warsaw to Theodore James and Gwendolyn Smith Clark. He passed away February 26, 2006 at his home. Richard lived most of his life in Henry and St. Clair counties. He worked at General Motors in Kansas City before joining the carpenters union. Richard was preceded in death by his parents and a brother. He is survived by two brothers, Douglas Clark and his wife Patty, Osceola, Robert Clark and his wife Mary, Latour; a sister, Shirley Schlichting and her husband Philip, Sweet Springs; an uncle, Joe Eger, Great Falls, Mont.; and several nephews and nieces, other relatives and friends. Services for Richard were March 1, 10 a.m. in the Sheldon-Goodrich Chapel with Reverend Durward Scott officiating. Musical selections were “In the Garden” and “The Old Rugged Cross” by Richard Sunderwirth and Gail Ingle. Casket bearers were Brian Schlichting, Noel Clark, Jacob Clark and Faron Clark. Interment was in the Smith Bend Cemetery under the arrangements of Sheldon-Goodrich Funeral Home, Osceola.

CLARK, Theodore James

Theodore James Clark, 86, Rt. 2. Osceola, died Tuesday morning, March 1, 1994, at the Sac-Osage Hospital in Osceola. He was born June 30, 1907, in St. Clair County, the son of Monroe and Dora Nelson Clark. On October 30, 1939, he married Gwendolyn Smith, who survives. He lived most of his life in Henry County in the Mt. Zion community. He moved to Osceola 10 years ago. Recently he resided at Truman Lake Manor in Lowry City. He had worked for the Katy or MKT railroad and also was engaged in farming. Other survivors include three sons, Douglas Clark of Osceola, Richard J. Clark of Deepwater, Robert D. Clark of Latour; a daughter, Shirley A. Schlichting of Sweet Springs; one brother, Martin Clark of Belton; a sister, Laura Pearl Spurgeon of Lowry City, eight grandchildren and several nephews and nieces. He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister and a son. Funeral services were held Thursday. March 3, at the Sickman & Dunning Chapel in Clinton. Burial was in the Smith Bend Cemetery.

CLARK, Wanita Dell Poore
Wanita Delle Clark, the daughter of Perry Dan and Elvira Hope (Pettus) Poore was born on January 16, 1921 in Cedar County, Missouri. She passed away October 11, 2002 at Appleton City Manor at the age of 81 years. Wanita grew up in Ballard, Missouri but lived most of her life in Appleton City, where she worked as a book keeper for Citizen’s Bank. She was united in marriage to Louis H. Clark on May 6, 1942 at the Adrian, Missouri Methodist Church. To this union two daughters were born. Mrs. Clark was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, daughter Linda Beebe and four brothers; Roy, Clarence, Claude and Lee Poore. She is survived by her daughter Karen and husband Larry Huey, grandson Trent and wife Cindy Beebe, granddaughter Kerri and husband Clint Dutcher, great grandsons Logan and Brady Dutcher and Tyler Beebe, all of Appleton City, Missouri. Wanita was always very proud of her family and shared much love with them. Her grandchildren were very important to her and she was known to them as “Grammy”. She will be sadly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her.

Vernetta Mae Clark, 79, Raymore and formerly of Adrian, died Friday, March 16, 2007, at Raymore Health Care, Raymore. Funeral services were held Monday, March 19, at the Atkinson Chapel, Adrian. Burial was in Oak Hill Cemetery, Butler. Vernetta was born March 27, 1927, in Taberville, the daughter of Walter Grant and Frances Mae (Anderson) Snider. Vernetta attended grade school in Taberville. She attended Junior high at Appleton School and graduated from Appleton High School. Vernetta was a homemaker. She was a member of New Life Assembly of God. Her church was a very important part of her life. Vernetta was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Ralph Delmar Clark; one son Larry Clark; one sister Virginia Preston, and one brother Lloyd. She is survived by one daughter Karen Sue Boucher, Joplin; brothers and sisters, Thelma Richter, Kansas City. Claudine Champ and husband, Albert, Lee's Summit, Marjorie Kincheloe, Kansas City, Clyde Snider, Clinton, Donald Snider and wife Rosella, Clinton, Shirlene Terry and husband G. CLAYTON, Clarence William

Clarence W. (Bill) Clayton was born October 12, 1923, to Troy Clayton and Mabel Warner Clayton in the Ohio Post Office community. He died Wednesday, February 5, 2003, at St. Luke's Hospital, Kansas City. He attended grade school in the rural area and high school at Appleton City and Lowry City. As a young man he accepted Christ as his Savior and was baptized and joined the Ohio Christian Church, later becoming a member of the Lowry City United Methodist Church. In January 1943, he enlisted in the Navy and served there until December 1945. He was employed by Texas Empire Pipe Line until 1947 when these plants began closing. On December 27, 1946, he was married to Lucille Shoemaker. They made their home in Lowry City and Appleton City. He and his father-in-law were in a grocery store in Appleton City, later coming to Lowry City in a hardware store. In 1958 he was employed by Menefee Construction Company as office manager working on road construction in the southeast part of Missouri. He had the desire to have his own business, so in 1971 he and a brother-in-law started an asphalt seal coating business in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Later he became the sole owner. After 23 years in Tulsa, he and Lucille moved back to their home area where he made many new friends and renewed old acquaintance. He was a member of the Clinton United Methodist Church, Sunrise Optimist and 50-year member of the Lowry City Masonic Lodge. He is survived by his wife, Lucille, of the home; sisters, Ruthella Knight of Appleton City and Elizabeth Hinton and brother-in-law, Charles Hinton of Clinton; several nieces and nephews and many other relatives and friends. Funeral services were held at the Vansant-Mills Chapel on Saturday, February 8, at 2 p.m. with Dr. David Maggi Officiating. Masonic services were under the auspices of the Lowry City Masonic Lodge. Pallbearers were Jay Knight, Kenneth Knight, James O. Naylor, Jr., Mark Naylor, Troy McConnell and Phillip McConnell. Burial was in the Lowry City Cemetery, under the direction of Vansant-Mills Funeral Home of Clinton. Military services were under the auspices of Clinton VFW Post 1894, Clinton.

CLESSON, Bill Chester

Bill Chester "Billie" Clesson, 66, formerly of Litchfield, passed away Sunday, Aug. 12, 2007, at his home in Taylorville. He was 66 years old. He was born in Litchfield, a son of Chester Irving and Annie Mildred Sevier Clesson. He maried Irma Jean Riemenschneider on April 30, 1962, in Litchfield and she preceded him on Oct. 2, 2000. An Army veteran, he served during peace time. Over the years, he worked for Brown Shoe Company and Wepco, both in Litchfield, as a carpenter's helper and in construction jobs. After moving to Taylorville, he worked for Continental Grain Company and at the Georgia Pacific Paper Mill. He also worked as a security guard. He was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church of Taylorville. Surviving are a daughter, Lois Lechner and her husband, Sam, Taylorville; sisters, Ann Boyd and her husband, Dale, Rome, Ga., Mary Colins and her husband, Robert, Lowry City, Betty Brimberry and her husband, Edwin, Benld, and Barbara Howard and her husband, Ernie, Gillespie. Preceding him in death, besides his wife, was a brother, David Clesson. Services for Bill were Wednesday, Aug. 15, 2007, in Plummer Funeral Home with the Reverend Rodney Blomquist, pastor of Trinity Lutheran Church of Taylorville, officiating. Burial was in the Elmwood Cemetery, under the direction of Plummer Funeral Home. The family suggests memorial tributes be directed to the Litchfield Veterans Memorial Garden Fund.

CLEVELAND, Amy Beatrice Barnes

Amy Beatrice [Barnes] Cleveland, 93, of Osceola passed away February 19, 2009. She was born January 9, 1916 to Charles Delbert and Molly Hutton Barnes at a farm three miles east of Osceola. Amy was the next to the youngest of eight children of whom seven lived to be in their late 80's and 90's. On April 27, 1935, Amy married Grover Vernon Cleveland. They met when Vernon was hauling the family cream to Clinton to the cheese factory. To this union two children were born: Mary Carolyn in 1936 and Mark Charles in 1944. Amy faithfully attended the Osceola Community Church as long as she was able. Preceding her in deathh was her husband, G. Vernon Cleveland, her parents, Charles and Molly Barnes, her brothers, Jack, Marion and Roy Barnes, her sisters; infant Mary Barnes. Bessie Garrison, Waneita Nickel and Mildred Coale. Surviving Amy is her daughter, Mary Carolyn, son-in-law Dale Atchison, son, Mark, daughter-in-law Pat Sink Cleveland, four grandchildren, Jim Atchison, Carla Atchison Gifford and John, Mandi Cleveland Jones and Ryan, Sarah Cleveland Campbell and Cody and seven great-grandchildren; Michael and Nathan Gifford, Quinten, Sabrina and Jocelyn Jones and Caden & Cyrus Campbell. Also surviving is her sister-in-law Nellie Mae Barnes and many nieces and nephews.
Services were Sunday, February 22 at 2 p.m. at Sheldon-Goodrich Chapel. Minister was Greg Mangum. Music was "In the Garden" and "The Old Rugged cross" by Mandi Jones and Sarah campbell. "What a Day That Will be" by the congregation, Gale Ingle accompanist. Casketbearers were Cody Campbell, Ryan Jones, Jim Atchison, John Gifford, Michael Gifford and Nathan Gifford. Honorary casketbearers were Quinten Jones, Caden Campbell and Cyrus Campbell. Interment at Osceola Cemetery.

Gordon, Independence; one daughter, Wanda Raymond and husband, Kenneth Dale, Lowry City; four grandchildren, Shelly Mazurek and husband, Dave, Holts Summit, Jason Raymond and wife, Laura, Seguin, Texas, Tracy Vaughn and husband John, Osceola, Eric Gordon, Lee's Summit; 10 great-grandchildren; a special niece, Kay Hart, and husband Bill, Clinton; plus other nieces, nephews and friends.

CLINE, Mary Quick
Mary Cline, 79, Weaubleau, died Saturday, Dec. 4, 1999, in her home. She was born Oct. 11, 1920, in Monegaw Springs to Charles and Dona Quick. She was a member of Antioch Christian Church at Pittsburg. Survivors include four children, Judy Osborn and her husband, Junior, of Buckner, Kathy Eldridge and her husband, Clarence, of Weaubleau, Mike Cline and his wife, Sherry, of Wheatland and Tony Cline of Independence; one brother, Homer Quick of Weaubleau; three sisters, Mabel Bastion of Hermitage, Opal Welch and Ruby Lightle, both of Weaubleau; seven grandchildren, seven great grandchildren and a special friend, Estel Cox. Services were Tuesday, Dec. 7, in Murray Chapel, Humansville, with Marvey Beach officiating. Pallbearers were George Welch, David Welch, Jerry Welch, Leroy Raymond, Robert Williams and Jerry Ross. Interment was in Antioch Cemetery at Pittsburg.

CLOUD, Clementine Lane

Mrs. Sherman Cloud - Mrs. Sherman Cloud died at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Harve Lane, a few miles east of Osceola, last Monday, and was buried in the Osceola Cemetery next day, funeral services being conducted by the Rev. B.F. Lawler. Something like two years ago, she was the victim of influenza, which later developed into tuberculosis. She was born at Deepwater, Henry Co., October 2, 1879, and was united in marriage with Sherman Cloud, February 25, 1902. To this union two boys and two girls were born, their ages ranging from eight to eighteen. She made a profession of religion at the Bear Creek Methodist Church something like 15 years ago.

Sylvia Marguerite Cloud was born April 19, 1912 in Roscoe, MO to James Benjamin and Birdie Rae [Freeman] Kirkland. She passed away July 9, 2009 at New Haven Golden Living Center, Odessa, MO.
On Jan 2, 1934 Sylvia was united in marriage to Ward Cloud in Roscoe. To this union a son and two daughters were born. Sylvia was employed at the Appleton City School Cafeteria. She was a member of the Spring Grove Baptist Church west of Lowry City. She was a resident at the New Haven Golden Living Center for the past year and enjoyed her friendships with the other residents and nursing staff. Sylvia was preceded in death by her loving husband of 68 years, Ward; three sisters, Lucille Cloud, Gladys Melton and Lois Ruth Shepardson; two brothers, Clark and Harry Lee Kirkland and one great-grandchild, Grady Kleoppel. She is survived by her son, Marquis Cloud and wife, Barbara, of Clinton; daughter Marilyn Carter and husband Jerry, Odessa, daughter Donna Wuster and husband David, Belton; nine grandchildren, Lynn Cloud [Rebekah], Paula Thornley [Mitch], Terry Cloud [Mary], Tracy Randol [Chris], Becky Kloeoppel [Pat], Michael Kemper [Jennifer], Deanna Hampton [Scott], Matthew Wuster [Lupe] and James Wuster [Amber]; 23 great-grandchildren; 7 great-great grandchildren; other relatives and many friends. Services were Saturday, July 11, at 2 p.m. at Sheldon-Goodrich Chapel Minister was Rev. Jim Lemonds. Casketbearers were Terry Cloud, Mitch Thornley, Chris Randol, Pat Kloeppel, Mackenzie Cloud, Hunter Cloud, Preston Kloeppel and Josh Randol Honorary casketbearers were Lynn Cloud, Michael Kemper, Dylan Davis, Nathan Campbell, Rickie McNabb and Derek Thornley.
