When Samuel Minks was discharged from the Union army at the end of the
Civil War, he moved, with his parents, to St. Clair County and settled
three miles west of Collins. He started a general store, blacksmith shop and
gristmill there. The settlement was named Greisel. The store was listed in Dunn
and Bradstreet as being a place where anything from a sewing machine needle to
an Altman-Taylor threshing machine could be purchased.
