James C. Long, son of James and Nancy Long, was born in 1845. He was a sergeant in co. B, Missouri Militia, during the civil war. He served in the Federal army.

Following the war, he formed a freight line for the government from Ft. Scott, Kansas to Ft. Gibson, Oklahoma, Indian Territory. He lived in the territory for three years, returning in 1895 and buying a farm near Ohio Post office, St. Clair County.

In 1907, he built and began a business in Lowry City, but the building burned. Rebuilding in 1909, the Long Building stands today (1996), housing the Landmark Restaurant.

James died in 1933 at the home of one of his sons, Burley “Dutch” Long, at Ohio Station, eight miles west of Lowry City.
