In what was once the hunting grounds of the Osage and other Indian tribes, in the valley of the Osage River, St. Clair County is situated in the southwestern part of the state and is bordered by Henry County on the north, Benton and Hickory counties on the east and Bates and Vernon on the west. To the south lie Cedar and Polk counties. St. Clair County originally included portions of what are now Benton, Hickory and Cedar counties. St. Clair County was established in February 1841 from Rives County (later Henry County.) The county was named for Gen. Arthur St. Clair, of Revolutionary War fame and the county seat is Osceola. The county's present boundaries were established in 1845.
